Back in 1986 Saab were really starting to build momentum with their brilliant 900 Turbo. The 16 valve engine had been out for a few years and, whilst fairly expensive, they sold well.
If you were lucky enough to have a very well off parent buying a 900 for themselves you may have stood a chance of twisting their arm to buy a 006. I was not. My wonderful grandfather who bought his 900 in 1980 would have been far too sensible to spend the equivalent of around £4000 in todays money on such an expensive toy.
They can just about fit an adult and child in, have petrol engine and will do 22 mph. Single drum brake on the rear. Option to lock up the rear axle for use 2wd instead of so you can use it in the snow.
Fortunately. As an adult, I can make these silly decisions. If only I could find one! I first became aware of the 006 years ago and started to keep an eye out. With just 75 made back in 1986 they are not easy to come by. Luckily a few years ago I was pointed to one that had come up for sale. It was not in brilliant condition but had most of the important bits there. It was the first I had seen for sale in about four years so I was certainly not going to miss out on it. I borrowed a friends 9-5 and went to collect it.
It was bigger and heavier than I expected. I paid too much for it. And it was pretty scruffy. But I was over joyed to have found one.
Once home I got it into the house to have a look at what I'd bought. The first time I took a picture of it my flash came on and I realised the stickers were reflective which was pretty cool. No idea how I'll ever get them reproduced though.
After the initial excitement life got pretty busy for a while so it made its way to the shed to await 'free time'

Fast forward to yesterday the aforementioned 'free time' finally arrives. Time to get to work on my baby 900, although mechanically it has more in common with your garden variety 911 or lesser spotted Tatra. It does have chain drive like a 900 though!
First thing to do was to start stripping it. I think it has been out of use for at least 15 years, certainly no mot history showing. May potentially have been in a small bump too judging by the front nudge bar - but then what 34 year old car hasn't seen a bit of action by now.
The main body sits on top of a heavy chassis with a separate tub inside for the driver and passenger.
I am going to take everything off the chassis, have it sand blasted and then powder coated. Few brackets to be welded back on too.
With it all apart I started with giving the body and tub a good clean. I also used Gliptone leather cleaner on the seats and then Gliptone feed . They came up pretty well.
Plan is to keep the body looking much as it is now with original stickers and to get everything underneath solid and working well. The old engine has been taken off and will be stored for originality. The new engine that is coming will have exactly twice the original ones power, electric start and a 600rpm advantage in its rev limit. Should be fun.

Wow, is this the one Lokari built in Finland in the 80's? From what I've heard the earlier examples had drive to the other rear wheel only but later models received a proper Valmet gearbox with a differential.

They did do a mk2 model which was a bit more beefed up and had lights. I don’t like the mk2 as much as it looks a little over done to me. These are the specs for the mk1

As a Saab guy, and a big kid... Much win here. Same! I haven’t got space for any more full size Saab’s so this is why I’ve sneaked this one in. delete - not sure what I did Trying to 'quote' only the pic with the dog in the car and the baby in the yard and note that it is a proper shop with security and a supervisor already in place. well done! Thanks! Was a lovely way to spend the afternoon. That young lady will be the eventual driver of this. Can’t wait!

Still, very cool that he bought a T16s. My Grandad bought me a couple of those models too which I treasured. Looking at the tyre wear this Turbo Saab must have seen some action. Cool little car, never heard of them before. It certainly does, doesn't it The tyres aren't even all the originals either. Hoping to get some good use out of it when she is up and running again too. Well this is well and truly bookmarked !!! As a big kid i find this very very interesting and envious too. Awesome. Hope you enjoy, will try and get some videos up when it's running too.

Update time. Package arrived.
As you can see the new engine is bigger than the old one. This is both exciting and a little daunting as space is limited.
The two things that touch on the body work are the exhaust and the air box. The air box is less of a worry but the exhaust issue certainly needs addressing. I had a look at the exhaust and it is possible to rotate it through 180 degrees. Awesome.
Next on the list of things to do is to mount the new ignition somewhere. Now, being a Saab there is really only one option for this. On the floor between the seats! Hoping to mount it so that you barely know it is there.
In other news, chassis is off to get sand blasted and then powder coated. Woop.

Great project and finally looks like a car that I could fit in my garage 😁 I remember having a passenger ride in one at my school fete in about 1986! One of the Dad's ran the Saab dealership in Stevenage and brought it along. It was white just like in the brochure picture 😎

Are you going to overhaul the original engine, or just leave it as is?

Modding GX Clones is a whole hobby on its own. www.4cycle.com is a good starting point. Ha! Thanks for that, lost a whole load of time scheming to make it faster. Great project and finally looks like a car that I could fit in my garage 😁 I remember having a passenger ride in one at my school fete in about 1986! One of the Dad's ran the Saab dealership in Stevenage and brought it along. It was white just like in the brochure picture 😎 Very cool. If you're still in Hertfordshire you should have a spin in it when it's done. Are you going to overhaul the original engine, or just leave it as is? Nothing very much at the moment, have just taken the clutch off for the other engine. Will put some oil in the cylinder and the engine in a box.

Did the brake tonight. Haven't worked on a drum brake before so it was all a learning curve. Because parts for this are not very off the shelf I had had to make an educated guess at what brake shoe might feet. These are for a moped I think. Either way they have more meat on than the originals. And grooves. Nice. Test fitted them and they would not go back in the drum. Had a look at the two together and saw that they round bit was smaller on these than the original. Decided to try using a jigsaw to open out the hole a little bit. Missus was not impressed at all as it woke the baby. It worked though Very pleased with that I came back up the garden to find I'd been locked out and she'd gone for a bath.
