So, ahead of 2020 I have decided that I need to make a few Vehicular decisions. First one is that I won't be buying any new vehicles, cars or bikes (unless that bargain Norton appears....) for myself in 2020. Scandalous I know. Secondly, that the Polo is beyond my budget, time, space and skill and will need to find a new home. Thirdly, I need one car that will be able to do all I want from a car. By which I mean it has to be: retro a car I genuinely like and want to own good to drive and handle well frugal to run small, but capable of transporting bits and bobs when required. tinker-able and fettle-able RR suitably mod-able
Anyway, pretty quickly I narrowed it down to one type of car. And the perfect example of said car was sourced. However, due to my self imposed time limits said car needed to be got before end of 2019! and for an extra pinch of amusement, I have been away at my in-laws (great people, and the house has a 4 post car lift in one of the outbuildings...) home for the festivities.
However, tonight I hopped on a train from bristol to Exeter (i am entirely useless at public transport...) and met the seller of said car. I spent my teenage years in Exeter and am always happy to return, even better this time though with a car involves. Seller brought the car to a car park for me to have a look, and I was immediately smitten with it (the car) Few little niggles that will need to be attended to, but a good honest car in pretty decent nick. And on the road and driving. With the appropriate bits and bobs taken care of, and with insurance sorted I filled up with some diesel and trundled back home to Bristol with no fuss no muss!
I am very chuffed with this car.
So, for a belated party game, anybody want to guess what car she is? She meets all of the above, and is H-reg :-)

As a wild stab in the dark, that would have been exactly what I said as well. The clincher is it being diesel, small 1990 or earlier diesels would be a fairly short list and describing any of the others as an ‘ideal car’ should probably get you put on a register.

Ta bud! Plans wise will first consist of requisite repairs. namely replace the knackered offside rear wheel bearing, which is grinding notably, and a drive shaft boot which is fairly past it, and a rear suspension bush which could use replacing. Basically do the advisories from the last MOT. I will also want to change the indicators to Orange! Otherwise I'm planning to keep it fairly standard

Nice. Always fancied a 205 diesel just to see how far I could run it on pre set budget.
Speaking of budget here’s an idea for you; There is a village in Suffolk called Hessett. Why don’t you take an ad out in their local paper and offer that reg up for £1500 and see what bites you get? You might just be surprised. I’ve seen quite a few people buy number plates with their town/ village on.

That's my intention anyway the only issue is the high tax which is a shame but there we go. I like how good it is to drive as well as it's frugality . That's an interesting idea 're the reg plate.

So today we have had Pippa into a classic friendly local garage for a perusal. Bit of a back story about the little Pug. I am the fourth owner, first was a believed to be a fleet car wherein most of the mileage was completed. She was then sold in 1992 to a lady ho kept her for over 23 years wherein she has done a couple of thousand miles per year. Sold to a chap in 2015, with her last MOT then being in 2016. She is then at some-point brought into the possession of a garage, who MOT her in November 2019 (do not register her), put her for sale whereby she comes into my possession. The large part of her ownership I think this little car has been maintained very well, and dent aside, the garage have confirmed my assessment that she is in very good solid condition. However... the font boots are either basically not there, or have a hacking great hole in them, and the wheel bearing is shot. So there's the first repair jobs! one issue i will have may be the suspension bushes, as there is play, and I have been informed this will require the removal of the rear axle? Advice will be sought here!

Congrats on your purchase Have owned several 205s in both flavours and currently have one (stored for 13+ years now) awaiting reawakening from its slumber. They really are a cracking car and so much fun. Re the rear axle... I'm not an expert but from what I have mainly read, and seen on a very bad one, the rear axle bushes can be a PITA depending on how far gone the bushes are - which I believe determines the extent of the repairs. In terms of whether the axle needs removing is an unknown to me. welshpug may be better placed to advise. There are a few complete axles on fleabay but obviously condition unknown.

Not painted how you might imagine! My mum loves to do painting, has done since the 70's in various styles, (technical term would be "is an artist" I suppose! :-D) and wanted to paint Pippa. I think it looks rather good! Problem is I'm gonna have to get her to adjust it when I fit orange indicators:)

Still putting off doing the big job (the rear suspension bushes) until I have half a modicum of a clue about how to do it properly! Have been attending some of the little foibles instead (some remain outstanding) First thing was the nearside indicator. Was heading home from somewhere or another, and indicator started rapidly flashing. Was ok as wasn't too far from home, and upon arrival it turned out front left j dictator wasn't working. Naturally didn't have any replacement bulbs in stock in the shed, so the ever faithful CB500 was required to refill my stock! Bulb popped in and all hunky dorey. For two trips, then it stopped again. Odd thought I, I hope there isn't a bad wiring connection or something blowing them oh no not electrics again... bizzarrely i wasnt to far from home agin this time either. got the bulb out, and it was fine! Did the tricky familiar to those of us who had console computer games growing up, i.e. blew on it and lopped it back in and it worked. Good but uh oh... further, i also still had the firat blown bulb. Only it wasnt blown... so a bad connection somewhere. Checked the earth by the front light and that was fine. Anyway it worked for a couple of weeks then it stopped for a third time, and no amount of jiggling or blowing would make it work. Had a look on various 205 places, and apparently the bulb holder itself will end up with a bad connection. So I removed it, and ordered a replacement from that dangerous place known as eBay. Anyway it arrived, fitted it and hey presto no problem since. This is why I get co fused by electric, I've had the old part on my desk for weeks and I can't see anything wrong with it! Oh well. Good place to store a spare bulb! Second little job involved a trip to Games Workshop. When I was a kid I was quite partial to warhammer, which requires some fair superglue (with which I destroyed one dining table, and my mum glued her hand together!) I still buy this superglue today! Perfect for some gearknob diy Its crumbling apart like a chocolate orange! A more permanent auction will be found. But I do like gluing things first. The iffy washer motor was also attended too with some wd40, a clean of the connectors and a friendly tap to remind it to work. The other little foibles I have detailed, planned and assessed... but not yet actually carried out yet! The floor behind the driver seat does get wet (storms gave this a good test) by all accounts a common thing, and rear offside door seal is the culprit. New part being obtained. The other issue is the heater blower motor, which has a mind of its own. No I've been told this is either a bad earth in the resistor/bushes in the motor. Not too a bad job as can be got at via the passenger footwell with everything in situ. Now I've been told I can take out, resolder wires etc and should be fine. However whilst I can solder fine, wires are driving me mad at the moment! So I believe I have sourced a rplacmemt (be prepared for a post about soldering if I don't get it) so should be able to replace the lot. I can then at my lesuite do some soldering to the existing bits and bobs. All in all though she keeps rundling along as expected. I'm very fond of this little car and really enjoy driving it. She is also indeed very cheap to run! Question though, do I or do I not fix the wing...?

So me and the wife spent this weekend with some good friends, a couple and their little 2 year old lad. Their an awesome bunch, they have a few classic scooters, inc a 60's sidecar for the lad, a BSA bantam (the engine of which is on my bench now) amd a modified T4. their house has more sheds and car space than house, and said house is full of skulls, steampunk and such. The lad has a T shirt which reads 'pretty fly for a small guy' loves his bikes and cars and is a great kid. Top people. Saturday was spent at their house assisting with shed based labours (to enable some of the above to be worked on) in exchange for curry. Sunday was spent at our house, (as they're electrical experts) assessing my Benly (thread update due!) and generally having a catch up this time with Chinese (I prefer curry...). Whilst tis was going on said lad was playing with my old toy cars. He had had fun on the Saturday sitting in my 205, and was very pleased when he found my first ever 205! Very much slammed, one careless owner, some body damage from impacts with furniture. Some scratches to paintwork, but to be expected for age. No MOT. Though as the lad proved, still drives well.

Not much of an update, on my that I still have the little pug and she is still going strong! During lockdown 1 she ferried some old dears to the shops, I also had a little baby this year and oweing to the omeba sized car park she ferried me and my wife to all the scans etc. She also went all over the shop collecting furniture (How big actually is this tiny car?) Mods wise still nothing, apart from a CD200 Benly footrest rubber serving as a gear knob. Great car, I think she nay get rewarded with some new wheels:)
