I've seen a car i'd like as a daily drive to take the load off my prized Escort (would have popped this in the questions or legal bit but I'm really up against it time wise, sorry about that!!).
I know a lot of people on the forum and car enthusiasts in general have a couple of Cars and i just wanted to ask and advice... I've been calling around and comparing online and its mainly the insurance that is killing me, i'm a self employed Musician and want this car for business use.... so they're definitely rubbing their hands when they see me coming.
My current Car is an Escort is a 1.1 and i have to pay £650 ish for that with business insurance and i can only do 5000 miles a year in total. After phoning up a classic broker and online comparisons I'm coming in between £780 > £1100 for a late 80s 1.6 Japanese beige car!!!! As a second car/ second premium Paying that much for two cars seems insane, I'm 30 now with a clean licence, 8 years no claims, licence since 17! I know i could take the business cover off the Escort but, i doubt it'll half the price of my premium. Basically what I'm trying to get at is.... a lot of people seem to swap and change Cars or, own a few that i follow and i really fancied having a second daily that i can move on and replace if i fancied it.... Is everyone else paying a massive premium like my quotes, if not any advice?
Sorry if this is a boring post and n the wrong place, i'm frustrated and very recently realised ive got a busy month of driving, I have a nice classic and its not really built for long distance (i used to have a focus too but that policy was very out of date and i scrapped it in feb) I've been offered a Car that is retro, very reliable and clean but isnt that rare... perfect for a business car.
Have some Car pics as cool car content is lacking in this post: where i'm at haha

As you say, it's the business use which is driving up the policy.
I have to ask however, how old are you and where are you based in the world? Classic Car insurance used to be cheap for people but that costs has gone up for Young 'uns lately!
It's also the mileage. Anything above 4k and the costs soon go up for classic insurance.

Classic cars and business use is unusual and would be expensive.
33 years old - my cars cost me: 68 Dodge Dart £150 72 Ford Escort £150 E55 AMG £190 I think
All agreed value between 6 and 30k. 1500 miles limited Brentacre Insurance.
Non for business use - I have a reliable daily for that.

30 years old 8 years NCB 13 years full licence 5000 biz miles/in total Leafy area of North London, inside the North Circular, very quite. It seems that way as you say. Even Admril want £770 . Sucks to be a Musician who likes Cars i guess. I pay instrument insurance as well which is the best bit Just trying to figure a way out of not doing 5000 miles in a 1.1 and ruining it. I'm hoping circumstance change in the future and i get to move further out, maybe with a garage for winter etc. I did do a post about cheap Car hire in the questions section and if its worth taking up the £4 a day Rental.com offers and buying my own hire car insurance. Of course i'd quite like the excuse to buy another 80s/90s daily though and i thought if i use a normal rental company a few times for a week, thats as much as a normal insurance premium.

Hi, I would think you're profession is going against you as well, possible access to alcohol and substances and likely driving at odd hours. You may well be a fine upstanding person but some in your field aren't.

Like i said i used to have a Focus but moving to London and it being quite expensive (i mean rent / deposit ) and the Focus only worthy of being scrap,i ended up with my Classic being my daily. Just trying to figure out a cheap Daily idea really and i know a lot of people have more than one car, i guess its just my profession. Are you cars all garaged too or, off the street? Anyone ever gone over the limited miles and know what the cost is? I'm a fair way off it yet but a few more trips to Bristol or Manchester say and i'll be getting up there.

It's not the business use that is driving the cost of your premiums - however your location is regardless of where you reside in London or how quiet it is - there is a huge premium in motor insurance for residing in the big smoke - we moved from a very nice quiet area on the outskirts of Madia Vale 5 years ago and went 60 miles west to the Hampshire boarder - the cost of insuring a 1.4 petrol Corsa daily with business use went from £1250 to £240 ! - that's correct a £1010 saving per annum

Are you a musician or a music teacher...
Business use shouldn't add much on, I had a 4y/o mk5 golf gti insured fully comp with business use and it was £8 more, making it £308 lol

End the policy on the Escort and get a classic policy for it and buy a more sensible/modern daily. Something you can get parts for easily. This will help out loads. Maybe a MK1 Focus or something?

I’m with clegg Gifford too, but rather than a business policy, I have their ‘home fleet’ policy, which allows me to add on and remove cars up to a set collective value... in my case 20k They accept modifications, have never declined any of mine, including engine conversions, turbo conversions etc.
It was fairly expensive, for me, but I’ve got 4 cars on it. My last premium price was when I was 23 and had 3 points The points are off, so hopefully come renewal it’ll be cheaper this year...

I think trade insurance of some sort may be the answer. By its definition all cars on it are to be used for business purposes in one way or another, so what the car is doesn't really matter. I have a specific policy that is only For modified/classics/import/hotrods with a high indemnity and it only costs about what your two polices are.

Some helpful info forum.retro-rides.org/thread/204569/insurance-time-comeI've been running a retro car as my only transport for several years, last year decided to get a second car (as a "sensible" daily) My requirements : classic policy needed for the retro must have business use on the classic at least (both cars if possible) must have "drive other peoples cars" option I was with Lancaster, found them very poor when I needed to claim for vandalised windscreen, and suspect I was driving illegally when I followed their advice about driving other cars ! (see info in the post above). I'd say avoid them at all costs Now with Classic Line, was initially impressed but got a very different vibe when I reported a recent "crash-for-cash" scam (see info in the post above), odd they insist the low value classic must be kept in a garage or on a driveway but the expensive modern is fine kept on the street. See the link above, some very negative experiences with Adrian Flux modified policies (but I've no personal experience)

I put the Fugitive with A-Plan in Thatcham (now trade as Cherished something or other) as that branch specialises in Kits/classics. Then I put our 2 daily's with them, then the house insurance. Just good people to deal with, seemed to know the market and the different underwriters and you don't get a script or a machine to talk to. When someone drove into the back of my wife's car they were exceptionally professional.

I think there are a number of factors against you as outlined above so here is a left field thought. Look at getting yourself insured as a Deliveroo, just eat Uber eats driver. There is a company called zego that provides by the hour insurance for when they are delivering, they also cover other gig economy occupations. Don’t know the full details but think it was something like 75p per hour. In that way you Insure you car for social domestic and pleasure as a classic and then turn the insurance aspect on when you are traveling to a gig. Full disclosure. We are working on a competitive product to theirs that, obviously, is far superior but won’t be ready for another 6 months. They might say no but worth a try as you are not always using the vehicle for business. P.

You live inside the M25, automatic price hike. self employed, automatic price hike. Business use..... you get the idea. Also you live inside the North circular, Saddiq Kahn is about to royally shaft you in a few years so anything retro, petrol or diesel, is out of the question, you'll need it to be at least 08/09 onwards (Euro6/Euro4 iirc) Hate to rain on your parade but living in London with a retro is gonna get a whole lot harder......I don't want to move but I might have to, to keep enjoying my hobby

I have trade insurance with Clegg Gifford. It’s 900 per year and I can have as many cars on it as I want, and also drive other people’s cars. I don’t trade but have sold and bought a few cars in the history I’ve had it. Maybe a trade type of insurance would be good. Not sure if I'd be eligible though and if something was to happen I wonder if they'd go to town on your not supposed to be using it for that etc... ? Will look it up. The Escort is on a classic policy at that price. A mk1 focus would be good , had one before. Just thought it I was doing it again something slightly more interesting would be nice. I'm not talking of doing mega miles, probably only 5000 business miles. I thinksI'll just have to muddle through for a while and see where I end up. Me and my misses have been talking about getting a place with a garden later in the year so will have to move further out , past the north circular I'm sure. The threat of the emissions zone does suck! I'm hoping I don't live there when it actually comes into force. Maybe then I won't have done my 5000 miles and can get a second car. Just a bummer as I've seen a great car and have the cash
