So its finally home. Only pic so far. Immediate things to sort are... Weld chassis leg. Fix all the instrumentation as only speedo works. Find out why its running on 3. Then I can test it. After that ill go through it all mexhanically, work out how in the hell I'm going to lower it, it also needs lots of small awkward bits of welding and the camper interior needs modifying and restoring. Not sure it ill go wide 14's and 15's or 17" steels. Tempted to weld the roof and sides up and turn it back to a panel van. If engine is too slow/shot it may even get a lexus v8. But all a way off yet, need to get it tested, tidy and reliable so we can go on holiday for the first time in over 10 years!

I run a CF ambalance converted to camper few years ago and fitted a Rover V8 and Auto box and a Cresta diff to gear it up....was a great mobile home, towed a race car at 20 mpg and used to get 23-24 on a run on its own....

Rover is the traditional route.
This has a super rare optional overdrive so if I can get everything working right ill keep the stock running gear. I only need 65-70mph cruising and maybe 30mpg on a run.

Something like this is favourite at the moment. But that may change. if I keep the pop top and windows I might weld in window recesses again, maybe even from a different van, and fit flush bonded glass in the sides. Have considered swapping the pop top for a full length fabric sunroof to but its expensive for something that will no doubt leak.

Love that rendering of how it might look - sort of a modern retro feel to it as though Bedford had updated it for the 21st century.
Always amazing how some colour changes, losing the chrome, and flush glazing, updates a vehicle

Or leave as us and fit a 6bt cummins in the back .....

I don't think this is LEZ compliant so diesels may be out. other option that wife prefers. Bumpers will probably stay chrome though. No idea how I'm going to lower it. I think it may need either chaneling or new adjustable top arms made.

If anyone has any bits, let me know. Not sure what I need yet but fiberglass bonnet needs replacing with steel. Needs door and window rubbers but thats no easy task either. Few autosleeper interior bits needed too.
Ill get a list together as I work out what isnt broken.

Tiny update, had a couple of hours so started looking at why it runs bad and why all the electrics are shot.
Running was a plug lead off, still stuttery but a service should sort it.
It also seems that most of the electrical faults are down to dodgy switches. A can of electrical cleaner should fix that.
Best bit is the overdrive solenoid now works so once its running spot on ill be able to try it out.
Only electrics that refuse to work still are the fan switch and reverse lights.
Ill get some more pics when Its light but I cant get anything interesting done till the weekend.

Excellent work, especially on the collection. Looking forward to seeing it develop. Some 17" Smoothies from here would look ace with an altitude drop!

Didnt know about them, prices are good.
Link gave me some pop up and brought up a dodgy 'you have viruses, must clear them now, follow these steps' type site.
Didnt do it the second time I tried though.

i think the 2nd photoshop is the better one, a bit more colour to show of the lines and i think i would keep the pop top as being able to stand up in a camper is definitely a bonus too. if the idea of a diesel engine appeals to you get one from a 2004 onwards van and you can get the van through the lez easily although i think as its a camper it doesnt need to be lez compliant to go into london anyway.

Ive yet to measure the roof, its something for the future anyway.
The problem with cf roofs is they are ribbed lengthways. Makes it awkward welding different roofs in.
Most likely it will either stay pop top or ill weld a stock roof back in.

Not much of an update, and no pics, but ive been busy.
Replaced all the ignition and reset tappets and its running better but not quite spot on. Top end rebuild and valve seats will be done.
Apart from that, ive spent about 15 hours removing the camper interior. What a job!!!
All out now though, and now surprises. Created access to all the rot I knew about and havent found any I didnt.
So, rot list is...
Front drivers chassis leg Both battery tray type areas above front legs Bit of front panel/headlight surround Little in top corners of front wings. top seam of drivers side sill the rear wheelarch areas where the sill tops and tops of rear quaters join Drivers side rear corner gutter Rear valance Front arches at bottom of A pillars.
And thats it.
Its been waxoiled and undersealed since new so all the underneath, inner and outer sills and rear quaters etc are all good.
Its not a good van, but it is a great CF!
Currently swinging too and fro on whether to fit 7 and 8x17 steels or 8.5x15 and 7x14 period alloys.
Alot will depend on what I can achieve in the lowering department so ill crack on with some suspension ideas and see what happens.
There not simple to lower!
