so had a look at hhe rust In the mazda rear arches, considering the way some of these rust it isn't to bad, a small area at the base of the sill closing panel and the area where the closing panel overlaps with wheelarch has swollen up and rust has got between the panels. For now I've cleaned it all up and treated it with converter. Then painted it with zinc paint later on I will give it all a coat of epoxy. As a temporary fix I will stick a small piece in bottom with seam sealer and seal the top up to keep moisture out. When I've got more time I'll cut the top couple of inches out and butt weld a new piece in both areas.

sealed up the seam at the top and stuck a small piece in the bottom. then gave it all a coat of dynax ub. eventually I'd like to strip it all back and paint from there but with it being the wifes daily hopefully this will keep the rot at bay until I have more time. The other side doesen't seem to have any signs of the seam failing and all the seam sealer is still in place but it does have a few areas of flaking underseal, hopefully that can just be cleaned up and given a good coat of dynax to prevent it getting any worse.

I've also been looking at the Range Rover ECM, about a year ago the coolant temperature sensor failed short circuit, after replacing this I found it ran very rich when cold looking at a circuit diagram of the pcm showed a 3kohm resistor is in parallel to the sensor, so as an experiment I fitted an external one and it ran OK. I was never realy happy with this so today I dug out the spare ECM which last time I fitted it gave a hunting idle. As advised by several sources I re-soldered all the joints, fitted it and lo and behold it works fine, even the mixture adjustment does something now. I haven't tried a stone cold start yet so we'll see for sure in the morning. I expected to find something burnt out inside the old one but it looks perfect, I'll try probing a bit deeper tomorrow. first though I'll need to have a look at the minor apparantly it's making a metalic scrapping noise under braking.

started the range rover this morning, started fine, but seems a bit rich, begining to wonder if the coolant sensors now available have a different resistance curve, putting the resistor back in again seems to make it run better so I'll try it with that tomorrow.
Minor was easy the rh front wheelnuts were a bit loose (LH fine), it runs spacers and I've never really been happy with them, we now have some alloy wheels which may be Ok without the spacers so need to take a closer look at that. For now I've left the hubcap off and told Andrew to check them regularly.

had a look at the minitite type wheels we have for the minor, the wheel fits but don't think a tyre will. its a 5.5j wheel and we are going for a 175 70 tyre (same wheel and tyre as the Lotus) so measuring the Lotus I think a 10mm spacer will do it.

As a dry day was forecast I took the TR out for a drive at lunchtime, of course it rained! everything worked fine though and it was great to get out in it again. My wife was out in the Mazda and got caught in a yet another monsoon, a wet right leg got me permission (actually more of an order) to spend £155 on a new Mazda header seal. Mind you that might not be such an issue, she's bought a 2010 Fiesta as a winter run around (three and a half grand for a 13 year old car!) so the mazda will become more of a summer toy, space issues and three 2 seat convertibles (and 8 cars around here in total) mean the TR will need to go next year though.

Given we had a break in the rain this afternoon I decided to fit the new header seal to the mx5. this is what £155 gets you. To be fair it's a genuine mazda part and very nicely made. also stinks of real rubber. With my latest toy my wife bought me for my birthday. I took the hood strikers off. undid the front 2 screws on the sill kick plate and pulled the seal off. pleasantly suprised at how good the body was, only rust was a little surface rust on the A pillar flange. cleaned it up and gave it a coat of dynax UB. putting it all back together was easy enough I think this is why it leaked. its a crack in the bottom of the drain channel in the seal. I guess itwon't be long till we get some rain to test it.

Used to wipe mine down regularly with a bit of silicone grease to keep the seal really good. From hazy memory it was a service mgr at the Mazda dealer who suggested it. Did seem to help a touch. Good seals main thing though so I hope your crotch stays dry… James

well that didn't work, wet thigh again today, I've tried vasaline on them before and it helps a bit but doesen't last. It's leaking in the area at the top of the quarter light where the door seal contacts the header seal, looking closely at it I think the door seal may be the issue, there is a channel in it which is crushed and closed up, so another £80 on a door seal and we will see how that goes. In the meantime I have packed the door seal out a bit to see if that helps.
on the plus side with the new header seal there is much less windnoise.

Tried something else as well, the gap between the quarterlight and A pillar tapered by about 2mm, it's always anoyed me but given the quarterlight frame is welded to the door I didnt think it would be easy to adjust, but it turns out a gentle tap to the top of the quarter light with a mallet was all it took to get an even gap, I'm guessung all it's taken to distort it is someone to lean on it in the past.

New seal arrived today but walloping the top of the quartelight forward with a rubber mallet to get an even gap up the A pillar seems to have worked, it poured today and no drips fron the a pillar area when parked or driven. There was one drip on the kick plate half way along the door coming down the back of the door trim though, looks like the polythene door liner may be leaking.

Mazda is still dry, appears after spending £240 on seals didn't fix it but a whack with acrubber mallet did! I'll console myself that they were begining to perish so would have needed doing at some point anyway. Today the mazda entered into semi-retirement, from everyday use and relatively dry parking I'll still use it in the winter but not as our every day car, we took it up to Ipswich to pick up this today. modern by my standard, should do for a few years as a run around, its a titanium 1.4 so pretty well speced and it all still works, only things I could find on the way home were an annoying rasp from the recent pattern exhaust, and a bit of wheel vibration (1 year old maxus tyres no idea how good or bad they are). It's also got a small patch on the rear of the offside sill which will get cut out and done properly at some time, the rest of it looks pretty clean underneath though. This does mean something will have to go so come the spring The TR will be up for sale.

Balancing may sort it but if it is the latter I would get something better on it. We don't sell a whole lot of car tyres but happy to help if I can. Ford wheels of this era seem to be made of cheese so they may very well be bent. The fronts on my focus very much are. Balance out fine but can feel a wobble when turning.

Thanks for the reply its a typo they are maxxis premitra 5's dated 2022, I've got a guy round the corner who has a balancing machine I'll get him to spin them up and see what they look like.
The wheels on the Street KA are awfull for distorting, I've replaced 3 and 3 still got a comment on the MOT but they feel fine when driving, these are the same size tyres (195 45 16) so it doesen't bode well!.

Andrew has been using the minor for work (around 12 miles each way) tightening the wheel nuts and removing / replacing the wheel to check everything seems to have had a strange effect, the wheel wobble at 60 plus has gone to be replaced by brake judder! I suspect the disc wasn't seated properly on the hub and the pads are now running on a different part of the surface, they are fairly new so may clean up and be alright after a bit of use, if not I'll order another and machine the centre out (they are corsa ones with a slightly larger centre bore, just need to find out where I wrote the dimension down.....

not much on the older cars this week, I've been fiddling with the modern (well 13 years old) fiesta. It's got a few cosmetic issues typical of a car cared looked after at a garage and I can't just ignore these things, so It's had a new Ford badge on the front, a new case for the key, some missing screw covers on the trim the rusty number plate screws replaced used some coloured polish to hide the ring scratches (lady owner) around the door handles, still need to replace the missing parcel shelf hinges as well. I've also added mats and a centre armrest. driven it 120 miles today, still need to get the wheels balanced and do something about the farty exhaust (possibly a noise killer in the tailpipe). Hopefully that will be it till the spring when I will give the underside a going over and do the patch on the bottom of the rh sill properly.
Having the Fiesta means I can pull the range rover appart in the car port and leave the Lotus and TR trapped behind it as I can use the mazda to get to work in. This week I hope to give the range rover a pre mot going over and pull the injectors and fuel rail to replace the hoses one of which weeps occasionaly, clean and flow the injectors ( hopefully come up with a well matched set out of the 14 I have) and replace all the seals.

so we went to Wichester from essex for a few days in the new 100,000 mile fiesta to do some xmas shopping (as you may imagine not entirely my idea). Came out of the hotel this morning to a flat back tyre, fortunately it has a usable spare, so I tried to fit it, 3 nuts came off fine the 4th ripped the stainless cover off the nut so I now have 1 18mm wheel nut and a 19mm wrench, fortunately there was a halfords opposite so 15 minutes an £40 later I have a 2 foot breaker bar and a 18 and 19 mm socket. All went eadily enough from there, fitted the spare and set off to Portsmouth for another exciting day.
Lo and behold it's fixed it's self! the vibration has gone and after the journey down here the exhaust has lost it' rasp. Strange thing is the tyre seems to hold air. All I can think of is there is something which causes it to randomly lose air and the previous owner has driven on it damaging the tyre structure (wheel seems roundi, tyre looks perfect and is less than a year old) might try pumping it up to max pressure when I get home and see if any bulges appear if not I'll get it taken off and have a look inside. Not the end of the world though (new tyre around £70) and at least I've sorted the vibration.

Free is always best, but £40 to fix the vibration and have some extra tools isn't too bad.
On the subject of phantom punctures, I once collected a bike from a couple of hours up the motorway on a bitterly cold morning. When I got off the M1 the rear tyre was as flat as a pancake, found a friendly local garage and pumped it up, not expecting to make it home. Never had another issue. I think it had been pressure washed prior to my collection and some water had gotten into the valve cap, frozen up on the motorway and depressed the valve.

yes I don't have a long breaker bar or hex 18mm socket so it was a good excuse to get one.

once I got home I had a better look at he fiesta wheel, It's clearly far from round, the first picture is with a 13" minor minilite inside it, even in the centre of the rim it touches in some places and has 5mm gaps in others, tyre seems perfect wonder if someone has put a new tyre on the damaged rim. Also looked at the KA because my daughter said a tyre was going flat, it's leaking around the rim which could be sealed but then I noticed a number of these. clearly what she really meant Is she has been driving around on flat tyre. so 1 new tyre and one new wheel ordered and my wallet £160 lighter.
