RAC man had the fuse box diagram and managed to get the citroen started by bridging the starter relay, so it's something in the various modules between the start button and the relay, one for the pro's. With it gone I started on the Lotus alternator, it was overcharging and the ign light had stopped working, I suspected the regulator so splashed out £7.95 on a new one, whipped the alternator off and fitted that today. lo and behold it worked, ign light works, and a steady 13.5V.

I had a new 'lucas' Alternator in mine 2000 miles?. Was taking someone out for a test drive with a view to selling when we got the old burny wire insulation smell. Similar issue, cheap far east parts failed. Luckily mine died completely before it could do any proper damage and we got home on battery power alone. Needless to say, I didn't make the sale.

That's why I decided to have a go at repairing the old one, if the almost certainly far east regulator goes pop I'm only down 8 quid, not sure where you can decent parts fom now the Lucas branded parts also come from china. This is a A133, apparantly common to magneti morelli. when I started this I cleared out my stock of alternators, 5 ACR ones, not sure if any work but I'ven ever found one of these to last long, they can all go for scrap.

As I was selling mine I did the cheap and easy repair too, think in my case the regulator went and fortunately blew the rectifier a couple of mins later which saved my wiring, it's quite telling that there are so many reg / recs for sale, must be a fair demand. If I ever build anything else or have a bit more time on my hands to fab some brackets it would be a Denso alternator all the way. Some of the little ones fitted to Kubota engines and such are impressive bits of kit.

managed to get a nos regulator, it's in the glovebox at the moment but atvsome point I will fit it and keep the pattern part as a spare. Most of the Diy is done now so hopefully I will get some time on the cars, mian priorities are service and MOT on street ka, service on mx5 and paint bonnet on mx5. For the moment though both are in constant use so with that in mind I spent some time on the Range Rover! Firstly the aircon belt was sliping, turned out it wasn't the aircon belt but the fan belt which then drives the aircon belt via the waterpump, easy enough to adjust up though. The pas belt also screeches occasionaly but it turns out that is fully adjusted already so I will need to change the belt, given it's the back one of 4 belts I will probably change them all. I also added some USB charging ports, it already had a hole in the top trinket tray from some previous owner so the idea was to fill this. removed the top trinket tray and made a alloy plate to hold the charge sockets. Then bonded the plate to the back of the trinket tray ( the green tape covers an old speaker hole) then wired it into the lighter socket and re-fitted the tray.

Went away for the weekend in the mx5, which performed perfectly as usual, only thing that is a pain is the sweathy leather seats, I'd like to get hold of a scrap seat and have a go at making new covers with Alcantara centres. Today I got the street ka on the 4 poster at lunchtime for a service and pre MOT, only thing I can really see is one rear damper is leaking so I figured I'd change both and the springs which are also a bit rusty. What a palaver finding parts for modern cars is, hundreds of people advertising OEM quality "shock absorbers" (pet hate of this grumpy old man, they don't absorb shocks the springs to that!) from some make I have never heard of which apparently fit every variety of Ka, including vans, and some even fiestas (I'm pretty sure OEM Ford ones didn't do that!). Eventually settled on boge/sachs dampers and Napa springs listed as specific to the street ka at a total of £130.
Didn't get a chance to jack the front up and check the ball joints (all fairly new but modern pattern parts so probably made of cheese), did notice one ball joint boot has a nick but it doesn't go all the way through and leak so should be OK.
Hopefully get a chance to go through and check the electrics all work this evening.

finished the service on the Streetka, got the dampers off, not a suprise they leaked both damper rods were heavily corroded. The bottom bolts that looked a mes and I was worried would be corroded into the damper bush appart from the head looked like new as well. jounce bumper was a bit of a mess too. springs are here and match the old ones, new dampers are supposed to be here tomorrow, shouldn't take long to fit them. but I have a new problem now, cleaned a bit of flaky paint off the floor and discovered it was flaking because there is no floor above it. I don't think you are supposed to be able to see the carpet from underneath. Looks fairly localised, tomorrow I'll take the seat out, and lift the carpet, hopefully it can be cut out and welded from above.

pulled the seat out at lunchtime and lifted the carpet. then cut pieces out of the crossmember and seat bracket to give this. cut all the rust out to give this. also found another bit of rot further forward, so I cut that out too. This evening formed a repair panel and cleaned/ primed all the hidden surfaces. hopefully I'll get a chance to weld it in over the weekend.

welded new corner of floor in. then welded the pice of seat bracket and rear crossmember I had cut out and gave it all coat of zinc primer. cleaned up underneath and a few other spots of surface rust treated it all with converter. later I'll prime underneath too then some topcoat and cavity wax should see it all done. Only problem in the rear dampers. ebay seller has been messsing me around and is not responding, I've ordered another pair and will have to get the money back via ebay. The top spring seats are also soaking in citric acid, figured I might as well go to town on them while I'm waiting.

Interior is all back in, sprayed some underbody wax around, everything mot wise checked, can't find anything else so just waiting for the rear dampers now. while I'm waiting I soaked the top spring seats in citric acid, and then rinced in bicarb soda, they were realy heavily rusted but came out great. I've given them a coat of cold galvanising paintand will topcoat tommorow. Also finished off my fresh air breathing system so I can paint the bonnet on the mx5, I have a old hot tub air pump in the roof drawing air from behind the garage, this feeds air into a ring main of pipe around the roof of the garage which has a few T pieces, I then plug a pipe that feeds the mask into one of these, the mask being a £7 scuba diving mask from ebay. works a treat, loads of fresh air and no misting. Just need to get Ka out now so I get on with it.

The new KA dampers turned up, unfortunately they seem to be actually be Toyota Yaris ones!
Guy was very apologetic but it will be another week or so now! so 3 weeks to do a 1/2 hour job.
In hindsight I should have started with Ford, if they still have them the Genuine Ford parts are not much dearer.

The right Streetka dampers turned up today, hopefully get them fitted tomorrow. The seller said he didn't want the yaris ones back, anyone want a pair of sachs touring dampers for a yaris? Otherwise been busy round the in-laws, tiled the new shower room and this weekend I'm replacing the soil stacks, I've spent so much at Screwfix lately they have given me a trade account! Apparantly this isn't how their tradesmen usually collect the bulky stuff.

built up the dampers and fitted them, I do need to get some better spring compressors, getting too old to take risks with springs flying around now. popped them on after work, seems fine, needs a wash after 3 weeks gathering dust and cobwebs but 30 degC sunshine is not the weather for washing a black car. I'll book an MOT tomorrow, might also start flatting the mx5 bonnet back and see if I can get it painted while the weathers good.

while the weather is warm I set to the bonnet on the mx5, after going over it with 400 grit I realised there were loads of pock marks, not it has been painted before and it seems there was poor prep, the paint was adehered fine so I brushed epoxy primer into each one. Then flatted it all back again, most of the pits ended up as no more than a pin head of epoxy and it felt perfect. so on with the top coat, I'm painting in a dusty garage so wasn't expecting much. difficult to photograph because of the reflections but all in all in it came out pretty well, a few bit of dust on the surface and a bit of orange peel on the back edge but I'm sure virtually all of that will go with a flat and polish. only problem was the washer jets broke (mainly because the previous paint seems to have been over them)26 quids worth of new ones ordered. while I'm waiting for them and its on the ramp I'll give it a service and see If I can fix the leak in the AC. on the others been using the Range rover but it seems to be getting a bit hot with the AC on stuck in traffic, the electric fans are working but I wonder if the viscous clutch has packed up, should have jumped out and see if it was locked when I got home but had to rush off.

oh and the diving facemask connected to a hot tub airpump worked a treat, lens stayed clear and I couldn't smell the paint at all. Do need to improve the lighting in there though, struggled to see what I was doing at times.

mazda has been on the 4 post in the roof of the garage all weekend, it hit mid 40's up there so it should be well baked to flat back tomorrow, I'll also change the oil and fuel filters.
took a look at the Range Rover engine driven fan when the temp gauge approached 3/4, feels just the same as is does cold, I am pretty sure it should be locked solid at that temperature, not urgent as the electric fans keep it cool enough if you turn the A/C off so it looks like over the winter it will be a new fan hub, belts (at limit of adjustment, crank seal(leaks oil) and water pump(leaked once but hasn't for 2 years now, might make a call on this depending on how the bearing feels, I have a history of the bolts which go into the water jacket snapping on RV8's)
This weekend though has been replacing all the external drainage at the outlaws, just plumbing in the toilet feed, sink shower and raditors to go. next step after that is removing the old asbestos and weeping poo pipe, I won't be doing that though.
at the moment car jobs are what I can squeeze in in the week during lunch hours or the evenings.
