Andrew has been out in if for an hour or so, and declares it much improved, as he says you don't really need first, which is no bad thing because it sounds terrible now the engine is much quieter and smoother, I don't think it's long for this world!
So we probably need to push on with the mx5 conversion, really just needs a propshaft making, me to make a mount for the slave cylinder and a couple of alloy blocks cutting up to space the crossmember down.
Oh and while he was out he bought a old trailer to use behind it for camping so we need a tow bar now, I'll probably make the one I am taking off the TR7 fit.

Picked up the new trailer, it's old but everything seems in reasonable condition and works should be quite a usefull little thing. It will be a problem reversing with the range rover you can't see it at all from the drivers seat, will need to add a couple of canes to the corners. Wheels are interesting look like mini cosmics, they might go eventuslly though, we will probably fit midget rostyles the same as the minor.

Now the minor seems to be behaving it's self I finaly got round to bringing the Lotus home and getting on with the paintwork. The rear wing and bootlid were prepped so all they needed were going over with some pads and topcoats. Came out OK a couple of drips and a piece of errant masking tape but it should flat back OK. On the front wing it's generally cime up suprisingly well but I do need to make some repairs around the sidelight pod where I have chisseled out about 1/4" of old filler and paint and re prime a couple of areas before it can be topcoated.

Cut back the paint and gave it a going over with G3 and the polisher. There are still a few swirl marks but now it's presentable I will leave for a while now to fully harden before having another go.

A little more on the Lotus, one of the tbings which it recently started doing is the throttle sticking giving around a 3000rpm idle. The design of these is not brilliant with a heavy spring on the pedal and one flimsy spring on the carbs. The main reason it was sticking was the spindle nut was loose, that was easily fixed but for safety I wanted a second spring on the carbs. Knocked up a stainless bracket to bolt to the cam cover and fitted a mg midget spring, seems tuo work well just need to drive it a bit more to see if I am happy with the pedal efforts.

Andrew is using the minor most days now seems happy with it. So with that back in it's lock up and the ramp free I have been getting on with other jobs. Bought the TR home gave t a quick going over, fitted some clips to stop the carpets sliding around and decided we are going to have to invest in a new hood, the current one is falling apart at all the seams and the rear window is going brown. We were going to take it to a local car show at Hyde hall advertised as no need to book but apparently that was only to look not partake which was by invite only so we took one look at the que to get in and left, and went for a drive instead. Then today gave the Street KA a once over fitted new front brake discs and pads gave it a service couldn't find anything else so hopefully everything should be OK for the MOT due in a month or so.
Hopefully I will get the Lotus all one colour this week.

Turned the lotus around and started on tbe front, that is pretty much ready for topcoat but I've gone down another rabbit hole. To do the painting I took the bonnet lid off, thaf reminded me what a mess the wiring in the front is, the original wiring to the lights has a mixture of dodgy connections, electric headlamp lift is a mixture of a TR7 set up then converted to a mx5 motor and the fan was a mixture of the original with a relay added. So I have decided to pull the whole lot out up to the bulkhead and replace the connectors with amp waterproof ones replace a couple of dodgy wires and re wrap it all plus fit the new fan I have had on the shelf for ages. This is what I started with (after removing sime wrapping and tie straps) All removed not needed holes countersunk Filled in and painted. This the new relay block I will use for fuses and the 3 relays (horn, rad fan, headlight lift) I'll leave topcoating it until all of thus is sorted out now.

Started the re- wiring, horn and headlamp lift relays done, need some more terminals before I can do the rest. The tie straps are temporary I usually build a loom using these then cut them off as I wrap it.

Pulled all the wiring from the lhs out. Initialy it was a filthy oily mess with quite a bit of the wrapping missing. Pulled off the remainder of the wrapping and wiped it down with panel wipe, layed it out. Overall it wasn't too bad, temperature sender wire cracked. Will splice a new one in. Alternator wiring had been patched I bought cable to replace it years ago, so it will now be replaced completely. A horn wires patched, will replace both. Also some of the original earth wiring could be done better and some of the components have been moved so I will move the branches to match. Just ordered some new loom tape to re wrap it as well.

bit of mission creep here, the cooling on these is somewhat marginal, for some reason Lotus reduced the radiator to about 2/3 the size of the original on the later ones, It's never overheated but it does get a long way up the gauge on hot days even when driving along (not been a problem this summer!) so while I have it all apart and before I fit a new fan I have bought one of these The eagle eyed will notice its a triumph spitfire one, Lotus used a spitfire rad with the top hose straight rather than angled towards the centre plan is to modify this in the same way, (it was £109 rather than well over £300 for a elan one).

Should do well, Mine is an early car, so full width rad. I had it re-cored and it just stays at 90 (now I actually have 10v to the gauge rather than 12!), have a single electric fan sucking on the alternator side when required. Tom.

Thanks, I hadn't even looked to see if a fan will fit behind the radiator, I'll hold off making a bracket for it until I have the new rad in now. Wiring is almost finished, plan is to lay it back in and sort out a couple of branch lengths, check it all works then lift it out and wrap it again. New rad has led to more mission creep, the fuel filter king sits where the new rad will go, something else I have always planned to do is lay a new fuel line in with the pump and filter in the boot and a pick pipe up in the sender so it can have a filter on it and be easily removed for cleaning if required so I've ordered a roll of kunifer fuel line too. Yesterday went out in the mx5 for the day and today spent most of the time fixing central heating (2 failed control valves), did get time to paint the windscreen surround on the mx5 before the new screen is fitted on tuesday though (lifted screen edge trim and pushed electic cable under it to hold it up) far from perfect but it's at least all one colour and finish now. And the box of connectors for the Lorus arrived. Probably better ones out there but they have got to be vastly superior to 50 year old corroded bullets.

I've compared the 10 a penny from china Superseal connectors to the ~£10 each TE Superseal connectors sourced from RS - the housings and seals were indistinguishable, only difference was the appearance of the pins - but I've never had an issue with the cheap crimps and I've used plenty of them.

The only thing I was worried about was using them on the headlamps, they are only 55w though so around 5A and the connectors are rated to 10A so it should be OK. many modern cars seem to use similar sized pins on the headlamp circuits.

As you say - should be absolutely fine. I've not tried higher current applications with the chinese ones - if you are worried, the TE datasheet is here docs.rs-online.com/ddeb/0900766b813833d1.pdf with the part numbers for the official contacts which aren't expensive and will definitely meet their 10A rating. I'd just use the ones you have and maybe check them after a little use, then after a few hours use.

Radiator arrived today looks like I can cut the top hose off and have enough straight pipe to connect to, just need to make something to roll a bead onto the stub with. Most of the wiring is done now, just need to wrap the loom, generally I have been surprised with the condition of the cable only one earth cable was a little oxidised and some vinegar and salt saw to that. The headlamp looms on the other hand were in a terrible state, the cable was like coal and they had a join in the middle, so rather than try to crimp new connectors on them I have ordered a couple of new headlamp looms (£10 the pair for MGB ones). Hopefully get it wrapped and back in the car tomorrow or Wednesday. Also insurance is due on the range rover so it got a wash for the photos. Still scrubs up OK but there are a couple of bits of rust, some surface rust on the rear arch and a small hole on the inner wing, will try to sort them out before the winter.

Guy turned up to fit the windscreen to the mazda, wrong colour and no pedestal for the mirror also reckoned the original style edge trim is no longer available so they fit some generic stuff that sits in the gap between the screen and body nothing like the original. That's total rubbish all the usual suspects sell the oem mazda one for around £50. I'll buy the mazda one and argue who pays for it for when they come back in a month's time for attempt 2. On the Lotus the loom is wrapped I have painted the engine bay, nothing special just a tidy up. Then fitted the loom. Connected everything up and all that should work seems to, need the new headlamp looms and a new washer bag to finish this off. Next I will paint the wing, then re-do the fuel system and finaly fit the radiator and fan.
