Odds and ends today. Cleaned up all the rust around the rear arch on the range rover, fortuately it was only fairly light surface rust. Then treated it with this stuff. I've found this brilliant stuff, this was treated with hydrate 80 and rust started appearing after a couple of weeks, I then treated it with cortanin and a year later it looks like this still. Gave it a couple of coats of epoxy. On the mazda I decided to do a better job of the windscreen surround, cut the rubber strip off flatted I then touched in areas I had gone through with epoxy in the airbrush. One thing that is now obvious is auto windscreen's intent of fitting a edge trim which sits in the gap between the screen and frame won't work, there are lumps of braze (in the middle of the picture) on both sides which looks to be where the header joins the A posts. Also touched in a few areas of primer on the Lotus, though somehow I completely missed this area where I had gone through the topcoat if this isn't covered with epoxy experience tells me there will be sinkage in the topcoat.

Not much today, painted the door shut on the range rover then started looking at the fuel system on the Lotus. Plan is to put the pump and filter king in the boot then push the fuel to the front through a kunifer line running inside the car. Pulled the trim out of the boot. Pump and filter are going where the alarm (which I fitted 25 years ago and has never realy worked properly) is. So I pulled that out. Probably give it a lick of black paint first as well. Then lifted the back seat out. Plan is to take the new fuel line along the trans tunnel inside the car, the original route is inside the backbone and very close to many other things. So I cut a slot in the felt. But it was is crumbly so I ripped it all out and will replace. I've ordered some bifucated pop rivets to fix it with . I also took the fuel sender out to check the condition of the tank and wheather I can fit a pick up in it. Tank looks spotless, just shinny steel, sender has enough space to drill a hole for a pick up pipe as well.. Finally Andrew picked up new wheels for the trailer, same as the ones on the Minor, even have the same 165 13 tyres.

Interesting work on the Minor. Is it an otherwise standard 1098cc, and is there any noticeable gains in performance with the Megajolt kit fitted?

It is a standard 1098, I would like to have started with a 1275 but they have got very expensive now.
It's difficult to say what is down to the megajolt and what is down to the new engine, it starts very easily, even on the handle from cold which it never would before is much quieter and smoother and idles very smoothly so much so that I sometimes think I have stalled it when coming to a junction. Torque is certainly much better, it will pull easily up hills in 3rd that used to need 2nd. Power is probably not much different but that will be because it's throttled by the standard carb and exhaust, if Andrew can get it insured with twin carbs and a LCB when it's due in October that may change soon.

It'll be interesting to see if he sorts the insurance, it has the standard valves but I did open the ports, up the CR to 9:1 and fit a piper 255 cam it would be nice to get mid to high 50's but as a road car improved mid range torque is probably more important anyway.

I'd be inclined to fit a single HIF 38 and decent manifolds, rather than twin 1.25" SUs (from previous experience with my Midget 1275).
You end up with just as much power, with far easier driveability and less maintenance required, probably better fuel economy also.

Bit more on the Lotus today, layed the fuel line in. Inside the car. And in the engine compartment. Created a bulge on the end with my brake flaring tool and clipped it in the engine compartment where I can use nuts and bolts, the rest will be done when the rivets turn up. I've now got to make a new bracket for the filter king and mount it and the pump in the boot.

I did think about that, might be easier to insure for a 19 year old too. The twin carbs look faster though! I've got the proper su air meter and plenty of experience with twin su's so hopefully we should be able to get them running right.

They do admittedly look good, however, the typical 'log' BMC/BL intake manifold is apparently lousy for airflow (according to David Vizard), and I found they tend to give quite jerky progress in traffic, due to the inevitable play (by their design) in the linkages, even if they are perfectly balanced.
Wheras the HIF carb has a progressive cam mechanism to the throttle, allowing for smooth trickling along in traffic.
Plus, you only need to buy one air filter!

Riveted all the clips in for the fuel pipe and wiring on the Lotus so the fuel tank is bolted back down and the trim is back in (quite a bit of this is coming unstuck so that will be a job for another day) also sorted out wiring for the fuel pump. Need to sort out everything in the boot next. Today though it was the street KA the steering feels a bit dead and doesen't return to centre. Seemed free enough with the wheels off the ground so I suspected the top mounts the LH looked worse and this was the side where she hit a massive pot hole and put a 3 inch deep dent in the wheel so I changed that. Clearly the centre has collapsed a long way it was so bad I had trouble getting it off the bearing. The rubber was rubbing on the top spring seat causing the stiff steering. Putting it back on it's wheels makes it clear the other side is not much better either, these are 2 year old pattern parts which supposedly came from an OEM suppliet which are now worse than the originals, I'll get a Ford part for the other side. It does dtive better now so hopefully it will be OK fit the MOT on friday.

Decided the weather is about as good as it's going to get this year so I painted the wing on the Lotus at Lunchtime. A few bits have settled on it and it needs flatting back to blend in but overall pretty happy.

Ka passed it's MOT, couple of advisories, red light on hazard switch doesen't work, I've ordered a new indicator / hazard switch as the indicators don't cancel either. Other advisory was rusty springs, given these are known for snapping and it rides a bit low I might change them over the winter. Other issue it has is an anoying stumble when you open the throttle from closed at low rpm, as it's cheap I will change the TPS first.
On the Lotus I have been moving on with the lighting wiring, adding modern connectors and replacing loads of previous bodges and damaged cables on the drivers side, did manage to drop and break the headlamp as well but we have spare pair from the minor I can use one of.

Been away for 2 weeks, the first to Norfolk in the modern with the kids and out parents then a week on our own to the new forest in the mazda. Apart from the chaos caused by the insulation morons we had a great time. Stopped at Rian's on the way down to pick up a wind deflector then made our way down along the south coast, spent the whole week with the roof down in the sun, wind deflector seems to work too. Fish and chips at 7.00pm in the forest. Car performed faultlessly, Since I started using 97 octame fuel the low speed driveability has vastly improved as well, seats didn't give us backache like the fiesta had the the week before either. Did remind mè of a few odd things to do, the exhaust (an aftermarket stainless one) is too noisy, I need somewhere to clip my phone as a sat nav and I have not fitted the new front speakers we bought a year ago. Also picked up a parking ticket because they seem to have traffic wardens who struggle to read reg numbers when checking you have paid, he mixed the digits up so the ticket was for a red corsa last taxed in 2012, we have pointed out the error of their ways, though I suppose it would never have come to us anyway. Got back and painted the back of the house then found a few minutes to finish wiring on the Lotus lights. Need to get another headlamp from the lockup and fit it but otherwise it's all done. Hopefully get the fuel system sorted out this week then I can finaly fit the new radiator and fan.

Spent most of the day washing and hovering 4 cars, mazda got a good going over to wash the pony poo off before the new windscreen is fitted on tuesday, range rover to wash the red overspray dust from the Lotus off and the ka and fiesta a quick going over to make them less of a health hazard.
Range rover needed a jump after standing for 4 or 5 weeks but once running went for a drive and all seems fine, might need to change the crank bearings at some time though, the oil light still comes on when at idle in drive, its been like this ever since I changed the pressure switch (twice) after the original got broken,as it seems fine in every other respect I might try a gauge first though just to check the pattern parts available now are not rubbish. First thing on this though will be new front wheel bearings, discs calipers and hoses as one of the bearings it a little noisy and the rest will need doing in the next couple of years anyway.
Also fitted the wind deflector to the mazda, it won't fit in the intended position because we have the seatbelt tower brace but it does fit well when fitted back to front and behind the brace, just drilled a couple more 1/8" holes and fitted it with self tappers, hood closes fine too.(mk2 hood and frame with glass window).

bit more on the Lotus, made some nut plates for the fuel pump and filter mounting. then took the sender out and drilled it to fit a pick up pipe. and re-fitted it to the tank. just a matter of bolting all the components on and connecting them up now. Also need to 3D print some new tell tail lenses for the foglamp covers, probably a good winter project. Finally the guy turned up to fit the mazda windscreen, despite the first guy who came with the wrong screen telling me they wouldn't be able to source the correct profile of screen trim this one turned up with the right profile of trim so I now have a oem spare screen edge trim for ebay. Screen was also not right, the mirror doesn't fit, it appears it may be a JDM issue as the European ones have a different foot, given they are cheap enough second hand on ebay I have just ordered the correct one.

Fitted and plumbed in the fuel system. Still need to wire it in properly tomorrow, but a quick test with a length of cable shows it seems to deliver plenty of fuel. Pump is currently bolted directly to the body, when it was in the front this wasn't a problem (fiberglass seems to damp the noise) if it is too noisy the backing plate uses m6 nuts so I can add a couple of rubber bobbins.

Finished the wiring and added a few clips. Engine started easily as well (it's been taking ages to prime the carbs recently). Found the mice were building a nest under the spare wheel again as well so washed it all out with disenfectant, looks like I need to put the traps out again Eventually the boot needs re carpeting and some better supports for the wooden floor, I will probably mount a piece of alloy angle accross the front for it to rest on, but for now I will continue with the mechanical work. So I removed the old fuel line at the tank which will need blanking. Plan was to use the nut in the picture with a couple of copper washers but the nut has writing stamped on one side so that won't work, I'll have to go round my parents and turn up a spacer instead. Tomorrow I'll start on the radiator.

Started on the radiator, firstly started on modifying the radiator, to re-cap this is a triumph spitfire one which cost £90 rather than £400 for a lotus one, the lotus ones were originaly modified spitfire ones so I thought I woukd do the same. The main differences are the top hose connection points the wrong way, there is a plate to sheild the engine driven spitfire fan and there are 2 additional mounting holes. So first thing was to chop off the sheild and cut the angled part of the top hose away. Then I needed to form a ridge on the remaining stub. Take one vice made when I was an apprentice 35 years ago and drill and tap 2 m6 holes in the side. Then fit a stack of washers and a bolt. Clamp it on the stub, rotate it around, tighten and repeat a few times and voila. Pretty happy with that. Then pulled the radiator out an test fitted it, needed a mm or 2 trimming off each side Then it slotted in and bolted up. Top hose is close but enough clearance to the cam cover. The weld seams at the bottom of the rad touch the bodyside brackets so I will trim a couple of mm off off them and I may tweak the wiring clips so its not touching the bottom of the rad but otherwise it's a sucsess.
