Well after three years of snooping around on this here forum, leaving the odd comment here and there I decided I needed to get involved. So last week after a couple of months trawling ebay and gumtree and the like I set off on a 1180 mile round trip to collect my new car, a Peugeot 205 GLX diesel. I set off at 2am from my home in Forres (north east Scotland) to Southampton via Dunfermline to collect my brother. We got to Southampton about 1pm and were greeted by Ben the seller of said 205. He asked us in for a cupper and we chatted cars for a while then it was out to look over my new wheels. I had spoken to Ben over the phone a few times(very nice bloke) and he had sent me pics of the car so I was confident before I even left home that the car would be as described, and i wasn't disappointed. At this point I need to confess .... As i pulled away to start the 590 mile trip home in my new car with no power steering, well no power anything I did think to myself, Steve what the hell are you doing buying this thing! but by the time I got to the motorway I was in love with a car for the first time in many many years Anyway to cut a long story short I arrived home at 3.30am, 25 and a half hours after I had left. Right I know you all need pics so I am now going to attempt to post pics for the first time ever, so this could take a while! Thanks for looking, Steve.

Ok, so she is black, has black 1.6 gti alloys and is far too high! Inside she has 205 xs seats, I think. Look a bank of gauges!! Now Ben the po tells me that Doris (girlfriend named her!) used to belong to a guy called Matt George, who used to write for Classics Monthly and now for practical classics. I have no idea if it was ever in either of the magazines. Anyone recognise it? Thanks for looking, Steve.

I did a lot of miles in a 1.9 diesel 205 in the late 90s. It was surprisingly quick. Does this have the XUD7 or XUD9 motor? Reliable and economical engines - I've had three Citroen BXs with the XUD9 engines - including my current everyday ride - and they go on and on. When the cars give up, many XUD9 motors have been installed in boats.

I quite like the height there, allows you to keep a pretty high average speed down the lanes because it just soaks it all up without handling like a boat!

dudu Its a 1.8 d so I think that would make it a xud7? but my plans for the future are to fit a 1.9 td with fmic. welshpug the ride hight isn't too bad and it has new shocks and springs, its just a bit soft and bouncy.

So today Doris went to a mates garage to have a new front section of exhaust fitted. Iv just been to collect her, but the flipping exhaust has not turned up so I wont be getting her back now till tomorrow lunch time.Ah well. While Doris was on the ramp I had a good look round underneath, I'm very happy with what I saw, no rust anywhere. Sills, chassis legs and floor all solid and what looks like original paint still on them. Sorry no pics, I had gone down on my bike and didn't have camera or phone with me.I'l try and get some in the morn. Cheers Steve

Nice looking 205, sorely tempted to get a diesel one as a daily commuter, great little things.
They are indeed XS seats btw.

Last time I drove one of these, it was a company hack - 1.8 (1769cc) is the XUD7 I think - Citroen always said they were a 1.7 for some reason? Reasonably nippy as I recall but very good for maintaining momentum round the twisties. Ah yes, the non-PAS steering - 3 point turns were always fun!
Never managed to figure out how only the French could make cars that seemed soggy as all hell, yet went round corners like they were on rails at the same time.

Phil H Doris has had a hole in the exhaust, at the bottom of the down pipe since Iv had her. I'm really hoping that this is reason that she has been anything but nippy lol! Should get her back later today with a nice shiny new exhaust, so I hoping she will be at least a bit quicker. Cheers Steve.

You can thrash the hell out of them all day long and they soak it up, typical old French car

Reasonably nippy for a N/A diesel, I should have said but as stuntman1 says, just thrash it. Treat the throttle as a switch MPG might drop to low 50's though..
Check you get full throttle though - makes all the difference! Saying that, the exhausts tend to get blocked before they rust out so you might find it breathing a lot better with a new exhaust on. I used to know a guy who used to log the mpg on his 405 diesel (over a 10 year period) - he used to be able to tell from that when it needed a new exhaust.

Looks very smart, although I've never been a fan of gti alloys on base models. don't worry too much about the wallowy suspension. They lean like hell in corners but my god do they hang on. If you can keep yourself in the seat, I reckon a bogo spec 205 (or Ax, Saxo, or 106) will out handle anything else in its class.
I echo the bulletproof sentiments also. People complain about build quality on old French tin, but from what I can tell they take anything you can throw at them. Our 1.0 has done 175k, been run for a few hundred miles on virtually no oil (less than 1l) had diesel forced through the system and had a serious lack of maintainance from previous owners. It's barely got a spec of rust on it, and it still starts first time, runs smoothly and cleanly, gets decent mpg and is a hoot to drive. Parts are dirt cheap too,, but there are often 2 or 3 options for various bits on the parts shop computers, so keep a log of part numbers and such for future reference.

niwid Thanks for you comments, I must admit I'm not a fan of the 1.6 gti alloys myself but they are the only wheels i have for it at the moment and they have brand new Kumho tyres on them so they will be staying for the time being. I have been looking at other wheels, but keep coming back to the 1.9 gti alloys, they just look so right. Cheers steve.

Look at rwd ford wheels, for Escort, capri etc. With a bit of fettling on the centre bore they are supposed to fit well, with similar offset. There are a couple on here rolling on old capri peppercorn, which look fantastic.

niwid Thing is i am planing to fit a gti front valence, but probably wont be fitting the wheel arches and body trim. Also i may lower her a wee bit too. I don't really fancy the ford wheels, but have been thinking, what would someone have fitted in the early 90s when the car was a few years old? Id like some period after market wheels but cant really remember what was about back then. Any ideas? Anyway Doris is still at my mates garage, Iv just called him and he tells me the exhaust has just turned up. The fitting kit arrived yesterday. I suppose I'm going to have to get used to waiting for parts now i own an older car. Cant wait to get her back. Cheers Steve.

joffturbonova Thanks for the pics mate, there's a set of venoms on ebay just now but to be honest iv never been a fan. These are on ebay just now too. I quite like these (without the rs badge) they are DBV alloys apparently. I not heard of them before but the wheels look familiar.
