Oh yeah while I'm here, can anyone tell me the differences between standard and gti suspension please? I know about the gti having wish bones at the front rather than track control arms but what the crack with anti roll bars and the like? cheers steve.

Very nice choice of a car and looks like a nice example too!
I've actually been looking for a diesel 205 myself for ages! Too bad they're so rare up here in Finland that you see one for sale only once or twice a year and even then they're pretty grubby and neglected.
Will definitely be following this!

Well Doris is finally home with her new exhaust, but I had to fit it myself lol! Sandy my friend who's garage she has been at called this morn to apologise, saying hes just been really busy and did i want to come down and use one of the ramps to fit it myself. well it will save me the fitting charge so I nipped down thinking it will only take half an hour with it on the ramp. Three hours it took me! what a pig of a job, just no space to work but its done now and she even feels a little quicker without the big hole in the downpipe. Only a little though lol!

Well today I have mostly been working on this. Its been my daily for the last three or four years, and I have come to the conclusion that it hates me! I think iv been reasonably kind to it over that time and have put very little mileage on it. I have spent about £200-£300 on it every year at mot time, and have personaly fitted new discs and pads all round, new rear shock, new front spring, both rear callipers, changed oil and filters several times, new aux belt and tensioner, new battery, new rear drop links, new front drop links, new bottom ball joints and track rod ends several times ( cheap ebay rubbish, Iv learned my lesson!), new hand brake cables on both sides, plus iv had tyres fitted when needed and even a new heated front windscreen. while I was doing this work on it, it has fought me every step of the way, blood sweat and tears have been spilled over it, skin has been lost, tempers lost many, many, many times! Today I had to do inner and outer track rods and a bottom ball joint id been putting it off and putting it off knowing I was in for a battle! Maybe its happy its getting sold because today it all went so smoothly, in fact I would go as far as to say it was easy, a piece of pi$$! Iv just dropped it off at my mates garage so he can stick it in for an mot the morn, I know its going to fail on the handbrake because I ran out of time to sort it today and I think it needs a couple of tyres too, but hopefully not much more. Can everyone please cross their fingers for me, I really need to have this thing tested by the end of the week because the insurance ends then. Once moted its up for sale and the best bit is I can spend most of the money on Doris yay!

As I said in the above post Id been putting off doing the work on the mondeo all week, but really needed to get stuck in today. So to get me warmed up and in the mood so to speak I thought I would do a couple of wee jobs on Doris. I have got my induction for my college coarse the morn in Inverness which is about 25 miles from my home in Forres. I'm 45 this year and have had 101 different jobs since I left school on my 16th birthday in 1986 LOl! Not one of the jobs I have ever had has ever given me any real job satisfaction (maybe a few did for a while) so tomorrow feels like a really big day for me. It the first day of the rest of my life. I have had mental health issues for the most of my adult life (depression and anxiety). I didnt know I had these problems, I just knew I couldn't sit in my own skin, if you know what i mean? so I would drink and take drugs to make my self feel better. Guess what happened, I became an addict! Four years ago I was 40 and thought I really need to sort my life out! So got some help and have now been drug free for over 4 years. I'm now on meds for my mental health, and have learned how to live with it , thats what Doris is all about, a project will be good for me, but the woman that was my case worker really inspired me, and i now want to use my experience to help others, so thats what tomorrow is all about, getting the qualifications i need. Sorry if the above is too much info for some people (and i hope i have not broke any forum rules) but it felt good to get it out and write it down. I'm nervous as hell about the morn, so thought id get Doris a bit more relaxing for the journey. Since iv had her she has been missing a rear view mirror, had rubbish speakers and the heads needed cleaning on her pioneer tape deck. My tools. Tape head cleaner, I didnt know you could still get these! Was used on this. And these. were used to secure these properly. Speakers now sound much better, now they are not rattling about, and the heads cleaned up well too. A drop of petrol on a rag soon cleaned the old sticky pad off the windscreen and rear view, and a new pad stuck it back on. So I can now drive to college in the morn a litte more relaxed Thanks for looking, Steve.

Glad things are going well Steve. Really happy I sold it to you and you are taking care of it. Not sure of her name though!!! I called her Jacky because of the number plate. Lol.
I will be watching this thread and enjoy seeing what you are doing.

Well Iv'e not done much to Doris this week, most of my time has been spent sorting out the mondeo for its retest. Failed on the handbrake ( i knew it would) but also 2x front brake pipes and all four tyres! Lucky for me my friend Sandy had some part worn tyres that he has stuck on for me, he also sorted the brake pipes. I owe him a big thank you for taking the stress off me It was supposed to be retested on Friday but the mot tester had a day off, so wont be till Monday now. I have managed to at last sort out Doris's farty back box. Last week Sandy had lent me a ramp and I had fitted a new exhaust, not very well as it turns out lol! There was a leak at the joint between the back box and the centre section, there is not any more Iv'e also done a little sticker engineering with some 80s style stickers off the bay. I will get some pics up later. Lastly I have found a guy locally that's braking a 205 gti, and have just got in touch with him , so hopefully once the mondeo is sold il be paying him a visit. Cheers Steve.

As much as i'd love one even the low rent base models are slowly creeping skywards in price and this is going to make me sound really old but I've got used to little luxurys like power steering but if i could get my old 205 back I'd have it in a heartbeat any way I'm off to ebay now to look for local 205's

Thanks for your kind words lilbob. I paid £800 for my car a few weeks ago and it is very, very basic! As i say earlier in my thread, I drove 590 miles to Southampton in my 53 plate mondeo, then got in to an 89 205 and drove it home. When I first set off I thought to myself , what are you doing man, this car is poo compared to the mondeo, heavy steering , rattles , windy windows and slow lol! It really didn't take long ( by the time i got to the motorway) for me not to give a dam about any of it Iv just been out on a sunny Sunday morning for a drive, just because I could.Iv'e not done that for years. Listening to old tapes iv'e not heard in years
