2000 isnt enough of a key
sand it back with 600 then 800 , might as well aim to remove as much clear as you can
then it will need a couple of light coats of colour , then straight on with the clear

i didnt say take the paint off
the clear coat has failed so it needs to be sanded off , to make it all work and look right it will need a light coat of basecoat

Any recommendations as to what clear coat to buy? Not experienced in this at all, but, buy the same brand as the base coat then they won't react with each other - this assuming you lay down a layer of base coat first as per the earlier post. And therefore know the brand

Those wheels look great, a link if paint and they should suit the car nicely. Are you lowering the car at all?

niwid I'm going this weekend to strip some bits from a GTI that a guy local to me is braking. Well I say local, he's 60 miles from me, but when you live up here, that is quite local lol! I'm going to be getting front subframe, wishbones, anti roll bar, front struts and brakes, also rear shocks and front valence and anything else that takes my fancy. The struts have lowered springs and shocks so once iv cleaned them up and painted them I'll try them on and see what they are like. I don't want to go too low as this is my only car and I need it to be usable day in, day out on the roads round here. Time will tell I suppose, I have a feeling the struts will be on and off a few time, till I find the right hight

Found a pic of the plutons in black. They are a bit grubby in this pic, but you get the idea.

Sounds like a plan. I don't think it would need to be very low to look great. Tose wheels are quite conservative anyway so would work nicely with chunky tyres at gti height or maybe slightly lower, so ideal for what you are looking at with full gti suspension and lowering springs.
Looking forward to seeing your progress

Brilliant
I didn't mean to say they were boring or plain though, just subtle, understated. I reckon they would look better in dark silver or anthracite rather than black polished too.

You know Tim, Iv'e been thinking similar thoughts. You know the colour they did the 1.9 alloys on the 309 goodwood? But the next minute I'm thinking maybe red would be nice, since I'm planning fitting the red trim strips on the bumpers. To be honest I think they will look good what ever I do. I reckon I could just throw them on as they are and they would still look good. But then I'm biased

I keep typing O Z plutons in to google to try and find them in different colours, but there doesn't seem to be many about. Makes me think they were a bargain since I only paid £100 for them, plus the £50 for postage.

Red with a polished lip could look really nice actually. Have you thought about a dark bronze?
I think the choice of wheel colour will affect what bumper trim looks best too. Red or wheels would look good with red trims, but darker colours could work better with chrome trims. If you do go for Chrome trims, the cheapest way to get them is getting the 10mm stick on chrome trim from eBay or hellfrauds and cutting it to length. That's what we used on our 205 and it looks great

I doubt the wheels are worth more than you paid for them as they are tbh. They might be rare but I doubt they are a particularly sought after model. With some work and a little thought on colour they will look lovely though

Yeah your properly right about the value of the wheels, not that I'm bothered about that. I'm just glad they were for sale at a price I could afford. The other day I stuck some red electrical tape down the side of the car ( along the plastic trim ) and on the bumpers where the trim should be, my girlfriend really liked it, but she loves red and black together. It did look good, but I'm unsure about the side trim. I could really do with learning photo shop so I could play around and see what I like.
