Rear platform fabrication last night lead to the drivers side being done... ... well sort of done still needs more work, holes drilled, front boxed in etc but progress is progress!

Boxed in the rear platforms Repaired the passenger side seat mount, as unsurprisingly it was rusty! Starting to run out of MOT failure rust which is nice.

Excellent work! Can't wait to see it all done.
Did you get a suspension setup sorted for it?

Excellent work! Can't wait to see it all done. Did you get a suspension setup sorted for it? Tom Thanks dude. Yeah the suspension is all sorted, it's a mishmash of Granada and Sierra bits, but it all seems to fit and work together although at some point I'd like to replace all the shocks for new stuff. But that can wait for now as the stuff I've got still works. Just been admiring your guttering side skirts on the Polo and the ARB bracket mod for castor, I keep thinking about something similar for the Sierra to get more castor to aid with self centring of the steering.

Cheers. I had grand plans for getting out and cracking on today but when I got out of bed we had a couple of inches of snow. The blocks look pretty simple to make if you have access to the right tools. I bought mine. Could take some measurements if you want? See if they're anywhere near fitting.

qwerty yours looked like big blocks of nylon with a metal bracket to sandwich them together. The Sierra ARB mounts are behind the engine, so I guess the same method can be used. Will be interested to the skirts finished think it’s a cool idea. To continue my update dump, I got a little bit more done today... Lots of Sierras I see just have the rear rollcage feet bolted onto the wheel arch tub and then the foot gets bent round and doesn’t sit flat. I wasn’t that keen on that approach so I’ve made a boxed in mount on the rear wheel tub, one because it spreads the load and secondly the foot sits nice and flat on the plate. Almost done, need to get the cage into the exact position I’m happy with and drill some holes. Then paint the cage, I’m thinking yellow.

Of course the rollcage has to be yellow! qwerty yours looked like big blocks of nylon with a metal bracket to sandwich them together. The Sierra ARB mounts are behind the engine, so I guess the same method can be used. I did something kinda similar on a sierra once just by adding pieces of flat bar behind the mounts. Nylon or aluminium blocks would obviously be the better choice eliminating the bushings. The biggest resistance to get sick drift levels of casters on a sierra is that the tires start rubbing the front fender even with moderate mods, so next time i'll be moving the upper mounts too, Either by adding adjustable top mounts or just slanting the whole damper mount back. Have you looked into making adjustable top mounts?

Have you looked into making adjustable top mounts? Yeah I've spaced the ARB further forward with plates before too... ...although I just ended up cutting the bumper away to get the wheels to clear. Adjustable top mounts are the best idea, although I've used Sierra eccentric top mount before but they don't have enough adjustment IMO. Was looking at making E36 ones fit.

I planned to make some plates to cut and weld to the towers, which would accept some generic ebay ones for maximum shoddyness Combined with the usual ARB bushing customization and/or moving the mounts i think i should finally be content. Have you checked how to escort and capri control arms fit sierras? Maybe they have more caster? Adjustable ones seems cheaper than sierra ones.

The Polo ARB blocks are also available with the hole for the ARB centrally instead of further forward. Although at £50 I'm not sure its worth it for the Sierra setup.

Maximum shoddyness sounds like something I'm down for, I had thought about this before but never got round to it because I didn't trust my fabrication skills... however it's something I feel confident I could do now. The adjustable compression struts aren't great either, you get the same bumper/arch to tyre issues and also it means either getting rid of the ARB or relocating it with a front mounted ARB kit (done this before, a lot of hassle for what you get) The Polo ARB blocks are also available with the hole for the ARB centrally instead of further forward. Although at £50 I'm not sure its worth it for the Sierra setup. Tom Yeah £50 for something that's not guaranteed to work is a bit steep, I've got a mate who works at a machineshop who can probably make something with dreadful drawings lol! Got a bit more done on the cage last night, drilled the holes for the rear hoop so that's all bolted in now... Hopefully I'll have the front mounts finished and drilled over the weekend and get the hole cage bolted in for the final test fit. Super happy with how it's turned out

Top bombing, Sierra roll cages really bug me visually when in a 5 door, i don't know whether anyone else has the same issue with them, they just look wrong as the distance between the a and b bar is for a 3 door, I know this is how they are made but it's just an annoyance

I think it’s just laziness I guess they probably designed the original cage for the 3 door shell and did the bare minimum to adapt it to fit the different models... still I’m happy with it hoping it stiffens up the chassis and provides a bit of extra protection if the usual tomfoolery goes wrong!

I'm glad it's not just me then, yeah they do the job just the same and any extra protection is always welcome in these old girls

Today has basically been a pitched battle of wits with the diesel burning space heater. I needed the space heater to work for everything I wanted to do today, mainly cavity waxing and painting. Thankfully the temperamental POS worked for a full 3 and a half hours before doing its usual trick of smoking the workshop out. Anyway enough of me moaning! Cavity waxed the living curse word out of the sill I welded up, evidence of schutz gun and waxoyl Then started to paint the rollcage... yellow obviously Also welded the bolt in diagonal bar, the threads were a bit knackered and I’m not fussed about it being removable. Oh I’ve also painted the floor with truck bed liner, it’s hard wearing and requires zero skill as it self levels fantastically. Next time on the Worlds Slowest Slow and Sideways Sierra Project more painting and struggles with the space heater.

Brake saga Soooo the spacer heater is completely broken so painting the rollcage in weather this cold is verging on pointless. Which gave me the kick in the posterior, to finally measure up the front brakes lines, get them made and fit them. So I got standard Sierra front brake hoses made up.... Then measured from the master cylinder/accumulator to the front hoses, using the scientific method of old electrical cable... Quick trip to Exact Engineering in Totnes... Early 2000’s Max Power Girl poster for extra win! Hoses!!!!!!! Fitting montage... Master joined up with rear hose, tactically placed join so hydraulic handbrake is easy to install at a later date... Productive day super happy, just need to fill the system with brake fluid and wait for the inevitable leak because I’ve failed to tighten a union correctly. Hoping to get fuel lines tomorrow... engine running for the weekend? I’m getting ahead of myself right?
