...what car? Considering options for summer - the thread title describes my ideal car - what can it get me? Current thoughts revolve around: BMW 2002: -but how realistic is it to find a decent condition tax exempt one for <£3k? As an outsider, before Lewis mentions it anyway... Triumph Dolomite: -but I'm worried it'd be too big... <edit> and they're a bit ugly in standard form TBH I'm not interested in a ford, vauxhall or similar (badge snobbery on my part) <edit #2> I should've mentioned -for ~£3k, I'm expecting tip-tip condition! Motorway friendly would be a real boon as well for driving back oop norf - although the car would be a daily driver Show me what I can do/get for my hard earned! Advice/thoughts welcomed!

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

How about a Hillman Avenger??
Other than that I vote for the 2002 and I think you'll find one within budget.
If your weren't bothere dabout tax I'd vote for a Volvo 340 and £2900 worth of mods LOL

Not tax exempt! I think that the '02 would be a pretty good choice - £3k will get you quite a tidy one, that you could use everyday without guilt. Alternatively buy a Mk1 escort 2-door. So for £3k you will get a rotten wreck, but probably a safer bet than any pension scheme

Moggy Minor? For your budget, a decent cabrio should be within reach

for £3k you could afford a really decent midget, and probably have enough left over to get a set of rostyles banded!
sun shining, top down, rear end out - midgets really are a hoot!

You won't get hold of a tax-exempt Sprint I'm afraid anyway, so you can scratch that off the list Another model reshelled as a Sprint, or with Sprint bits - yes - but few and far between! I'd reckon the 02'd be the nicest bet.......Good potential as well!

£1500 or so won the white Datsun 1200 coupe that sold on eBay last week, a really nice one that I certified as tax exempt just recently. B110 1200 series is small, light, RWD and a good basis for tuning. Apparently a Japanese buyer won it!
I think out of everything suggested above I'd be going Viva or Avenger, or the '02 if I wanted a bit more sophistication.

How's about a '66 Mustang? Slightly over your budget at £3.5k but its tax free, RWD and not much bigger than a sierra.

Indeed it is. But it's probably still the most powerful car that's been suggested so far. and throwing a 302 in shouldn't be to difficult.

It will add cost plenty quick though. But then have you seen the price of V8 Mustangs these days...
Theres a surprising amount of stuff to swap out if you go S6 to V8 hense the price difference. Even the wiring loom is wrong as the starter, dizzy, etc etc are all in diametrically opposing positions on the 6 & v8.
I'd be tempted if I had the dosh. where did you spot that one?

That's the thing, it's one of those iconic cars that seem to always be in demand, Like Mk1&2 escorts and Split screen campers. So you'd have to try pretty hard to loose out on it, Even after a bit of resto/modding work.
