Went round to see my parents today as my dad has just turned 70. A scary thought in itself.
Anyway I did take 5 mins to check on his car while I was there as its not used much these days (possibly last it was driven was when I test drove it after charging up the battery a month or two ago hadn't been driven since August '06 before then)
This car is sort of interesting. My dad likes Jags and has owned a few of them. He went to buy a new one back just after the V8 ones came out and decided he didn't like the revised dash or something and asked if they could get him one of the older straight 6 models if there were any unregistered ones left. He was told no, and my dad never likes to take no for an answer, so he milked a few contacts in the industry and foud Jag had retained a couple of straight 6 cars for some purpose we never found out and managed to bag one of them, and got it at dealer cost to boot (whiley old Yorkshireman!) I don't know Jags spec lists but I am lead to believe its a top of the range Sovereign with every available option.
So its a plush car with an interestingish story to it and in the family from new.
So my dad says he's decided to not renew his drivers licence and its expired so he can no longer drive.
So I said "well, if you want me to take that old Jag away for you I'd do that as a favour" (as a joke, you know.)
Now my parents have long hated my interest in old cars and take my ownership of old tat as some form of challenge.
My ma says "You can have the Jag for nothing if you get rid of enough of the old bangers at your house so that theres only the Jag and the Mazda on the drive"
That means two cars.
I don't do blackmail.
But none of my cars are road legal AND running (I can do one but not the other) so I could really use a car...
But I'm hoping the Chrysler will be fixed soon.
But I always really rather liked that Jag.
Whats a guy to do?
And its not every day I turn down a free late 90s Jag with T&T... So I changed the subject without giving an answer...
I'm 37 and still under parental pressure!
EDIT: so am I being an ass, or am I standing firm in my "retro tat beliefs" or what? I don't like taking parental handouts, I'm old enough to do my own thing.

i say hide the other cars , get the jag then after a suitable amount of time re introduce the other cars to the drive, that is the only sensible and logical option.

That says it all to me. Its not really interesting. Its just an end of line lower spec (cos of the six) model. If you actually got rid of your several US made heaps with all their foibles and got the Jag instead I'm 100% convinced you'd be bored out of your mind within 10 minutes. If you fancy a Jag , go find a mid nineties one for a few hundred quid and have your fun.

Get the Jag, slam it over Cragar 5's with a white vinyl roof and button-velour upholstery. Then show it proudly to your dad. Bonus points if you have managed the full 'Akku' by making it immobile during that period. Just a thought...

I think you should repaint your bedroom walls black to teach your mum and dad a lesson (like adrian mole). Car-wise I say keep the faith TAT.

Take the Jag keep the tat. If they mention anything about 'the deal' just gaze at them for a few seconds and mutter something to the wife about mental homes.

Turn down the Jag. I'll then offer him £100 for it, you convince him its a good idea. As I'm local you can then drive it whenever you want, promise!

Even if I get it for free with no strings attached the Chrysler or one of the others would probably have to go. Simple reason being the insurance on the Jag will be a fair sum and I'd need money to pay for that. As I've been driving on classic car policies for 10+ years I have no No Claims Bonus and any time I look at a modern car policy I have to start from scratch, ouch.
Seth, not sure why you think its low spec? Its a 4 litre lump and some Jag enthusiasty type people still tell me that the AJ40 series straight 6 is a better engine than the V8 that replaced it. Certainly its smoother. The Soverign is the top model over the XJ6, Sport and Executive. Its got 2 tone leather, sport mode auto, full automatic dual zone climate, blah blah blah. My old man's last car cost more than my first house... But now is probably worth a couple of grand or something.
Appart from the fearsome insurance I rue the day anything goes wrong with the damn thing though.
Oddly enough a couple of weeks ago I was considering selling all my cars and most of the tools and buying an XJ-R with the proceeds....
Then this halfway offer comes up...
Oddly enough Em hasn't mentioned it since my mum did.

Showing my ignorance of anything built after about 1976! My view is no problem if you have to sell one car to fit it in if you want it, but you shouldn't "be made" to get rid of them all. Anyway, what would it achieve? I doubt you're premises would be without some old piece of Akku tat for more than a month.

My ma says "You can have the Jag for nothing if you get rid of enough of the old bangers at your house so that theres only the Jag and the Mazda on the drive" '..get rid of..' is such a vague expression and very open to interpretation ;D I.e. No mention of how many feet away and for how many minutes....
