Well, as I said, one out, one in.... After following up a lead on a car (it was a very obvious lead) I've made arrangements to collect the holy grail of Vauxhall FEs... (well, to me at least). Currently a little laid up but will be on the road shortly. Twin carb, Getrag 5 speed (dogleg 1st), last of the FEs (I'm not a fan of the headlamps but hey), front spoiler, stylish tartan interior, no vinyl roof, rostyles....... So... a road trip on Saturday featuring a Land Rover. Place bets now. I'm VERY, VERY excited. (before anyone mentions plans... it's staying standard although I might hide some sort of audio in it and yes, I'm boring and old)

Was this on eBay? Thought I saw it a few weeks back.
It looks like its riding lower than standard already! Will you be keeping as is but with improvements? Can't help thinking it could be improved with a change of wheels.

Nice buy! It doesn't look too bad rustwise, are you going to restore it or leave as is? I'd change the wheels as well, for period alloys and keep these for shows but that's just me obviously Good luck!

From the pics I have, it looks very good. It'll need a spot of paint on the front spoiler and that aerial sticking out of the wing needs to go but I think it's really all ok. Will get the interior sorted and any issues dealt with. I don't see the need to modify it as I have another one for all that. Wheels will get refurbished too, I'm a fan of the rostyles, again, I have another 4/90 to play with and many, many shiny wide wheels. (and they're 5x120 which is handy)
I think overall, sympathetic resto, I don't want to be scared to use it but I'd like it as good as possible.

Oh my word that is just stunning, what a gem...
I like the sound of usable originality as the theme of the 'titivation' on this motor, that's definitely the way to go...
I am a fan of the RoStyles but it might be worth trying to source a set of Avon Safety Wheels as fitted to the Droop Snoot Firenza, I think that'd look pretty darn special indeed.
Anyhow, do keep us posted on this one... This looks wonderful!

I was having a ponder about this very car! Shame about my leg, etc, as I too also wanted a VX490. Still, I can't think of a better home. Can't wait to see how it turns out with a bit of love

Only a couple of days now, rather very exciting. Expect pictures over the weekend if I get time and the MOT is Monday so there may even be a progress report instead of lots of wobbly photos.

That's a great looking motor you've got Phil, can't wait to see more pics of it. We've got a VX490 sitting outside, been there for years (was my wife's granny's old car) and it's deteriorated beyond repair which is a shame as I'd have loved to get it going.

......... I am a fan of the RoStyles but it might be worth trying to source a set of Avon Safety Wheels as fitted to the Droop Snoot Firenza, I think that'd look pretty darn special indeed....... Sadly they're 4x4in not a convenient 4x100 and certainly not the useful 5x120 I'd need. Even worse, the Carlton GSi rims that look a little Avon Safety wheel-esque are a really inconvenient 5x110. Unless of course one was to do something like put an FE body over GSi running gear and floorpan but that's just crazy...... actually. Hmmmmmmmmmmm Thing is, you'd need a half dead FE and a Carlton GSi3000...... Oh yeah, I have both of those.
