Well, I guess it's time for a road trip report. Early this morning we trundled up to Ambrow Trailers in Christchurch to collect the car mover, hitched up and buggered of to a secret location, just off the A29 between Arundel and Aberdeen. (nearer Arundel). The trip up was uneventful apart from getting held up near a place called Goodwood as there was some sort of shin-dig going on. We loaded it up and came home. Then when we got back, I unloaded the car then went and returned the trailer. and that's it really, no drama. There are a few bits to attend to, incorrect tail pipe, not sure on the tow bar situation, inner wings and a general tidy up all round.

Well, after a short trip to the MOT today, I was rewarded with a
fail... only 17 failure items though, and 7 of those appear to be the handbrake not working. Got 4 patches to do, one big one, one medium and two very small. Brake pipe front to rear is grotty and one track rod end and that's about the size of it, I've already done the headlamps and indicators, all of which ceased to function between me checking them this morning and it getting tested..
I've also taken the opportunity to start tidying up some of the loose interior trim and replaced the broken window winders (as well as lining them all up as I don't like 'em wonky).
I'll have to drag my spare doors out and get them prepped I think as a couple of these are a bit scruffy and while I'm being picky I'll have to use up my spare bootlid. This is all a long time down the road though as the current targe is MOT and get some miles done.
There seems to be some sort of sweepstake going as to who will be the first to back it into a car at traffic lights/junction due to the silly 1st gear place....
All in all, I'm a very happy Phil.

Well, tidied a few bits but cursing the dreadful parts availability, I mean the car isn't THAT old, it shouldn't be so difficult to just get stuff from motor factors should it?

Out of curiosity, what size engine is in this thing. Reason why, is it looks similar to Holden Torana's (LH) and Sunbird's (UC) of the same vintage. There are stacks of spares for them, so could make it easier for you..

Yup 2279cc, I would expect the Australian market to have uprated suspension and bigger engines etc.....
The did put the 3.3 straight six in them...

Right, well, where to start. Mechanically now nearly done, must swap the panhard rod or do the bushes and need to get a speedo cable. All welding issues for the mOT are done and I've just fitted new rear cylinders and shoes so the brakes largely work now. Will get some new front pads in it too. Not going mad on it yet as it needs to prove itself. Insurance for me and the missus is a piffling £160 which is pretty good as the policy on the green car is over 35s only. (it was only an extra £20 to put MonzaNikki on this policy). I'll probably delete the towing gear, I need an estate as a load lugger This was bugging me.... but since I have these: I did this: got my new locking cap on: cleaned the gack out of these and fitted new thingies did some thinking............ got VERY annoyed by this.... Overall, still very happy. Looking forward to being on the road. MOT next week and should be motoring by the weekend.

How do these relate to their Opel counterparts? This is basically the same as an Ascona, right? Or is it bigger?

It shares the underpinnings with an Opel thingumy (rekord/ascona can't remember) but that's about it really. It's the last Vauxhall designed car and there isn't an Opel version. I don't think the engine is shared either.
Today, my brain has melted and I can't remember anything or function at all.

I has been mentioned that it shares with the Commodore, but I'm very sure that isn't correct. Ascona sounds much more like it, as the car is about Cavalier sized, but very little is shared really and the mix of metric and imperial fittings is amusing... sometimes.

Oh, and the optician I had to see last week (eye test and had a bit of a case of arc eye) used to fit shock absorbers to the back of VX490s in 1978.... what are the chances!?
