i think the newsagents across the road from liv st had it, and the wh smiths down by leadenhall market always did still - i agree that it wasnt as widely available as it should have been. But i think they had the numbers, it was a case that they then lost them

I've been out of the loop for various reasons (not going into them here ) but I have to say Paul, that this is very sad news. I too have watched Retro Cars since the first issue - initially professionally, as the name kinda stepped on our toes as the publisher of the original RETRO magazine (ironic isn't it that Future then bought both Classics and Retro Magazines...) and then as an enthusiast. I haven't bought the mag (or any others, frankly) for some time as I think the definition of retro has changed from where we first came from - certainly the *publisher's* deffo of retro has changed - and none of the mags represent completely what the real enthusiasts are actually driving. Sadly that is due to the demands of an advertising-led consumer publishing world. However, I'm not convinced that there is a market for such a magazine - as we are talking about a niche market within a niche market. Trying to be more populist always upsets the hard-core, die hard, 'true' enthusiast. I know CLASSICS suffered from accusations of being an extension of the MG Car Club at one time - even though we hadn't featured an MG for months! If you try to do too much outside of the box, then folks won't buy it - keep repeating yourself and they don't buy it. You're dammed if you do... My comiserations, Paul. Pass that onto everyone on the team. Good luck for the future and lets hope something good comes from all of this. All the best, Tim

I blame all these retro car discussion boards popping up where you can talk to the people who own the cars direct, help people with projects and sell stuff fast!
Only joking! Retro cars and Practical Performance car were the only car magazines I bothered with! Best wishes to anyone involved with Retro cars magazine.
Oh well, back to Practical Classics, sob!

I'm waiting for retro driver....... Meantime I'll be reading PPC Well i'm gutted about it. I am a subscriber and looked forward to picking it up off the mat every month. It mostly catered to what i like. I had a Photoshoot nearly 3 months ago, pulled out all the stops to get my car ready for this, spent loads of money. Days cleaning the car and got up damn early on the dayand for what. I couldn't wait to see my car within the pages of Retro. Been telling everyone about it and now nothing! Sorry but thats my rant. Not important in the grand scheme of thing i know but i am pi$$ed off! Well i was thinking of subscribing to PPC and now i now where my money will be going every month! What this Retro Driver then?

Just got the letter through saying its all over for RC, its a shame as I enjoyed the mag, the last few issues really improved but if it wasn't working then I've been offered 45% discount on a sub to Classic Ford/Vauxhall, Total Vauxhall, Fast Ford/Bike, Redline, FastCar, Mini Mag and Classics Monthly, might look at the last one for a bit. I've just cancelled my Autosport sub as i ran out of time to read them all, now i have no magazines coming through the letterbox

This is a shame. I stopped buying the mag a long time ago due to being a bit strapped for cash and the content not being all that great any more. I think if the staff had more say in the content of the mag, it would have been much better. But I fear it was the "suits" that had them write about a Mini in what seemed like every single issue... Best of luck to the Retro Cars team in their future careers.

I was gutted to hear this when I was looking on Press Gazette, we've lost a good magazine. I applied to RC for work experience earlier this year, offering to work on the floor on my laptop if that rings a bell? Would've loved to come in sometime and joined the team for a bit as I loved the mag. So it's a double loss as far as I'm concerned. Best of luck with future projects guys.

never really had a problem finding the mag for sale but it did become a bit hit and miss the last 18mnths or so with the cars it was featuring and certainly some of the buyers guides left me a bit baffled..but still a shame cos it looks like a bit more thought had gone into the last few issues suppose now i'll have to stand in the queue for practical classics with all the other flat cap wearing, werthers original chewing old farts. every cloud.... ;D

This is bad news.... Started reading it at the time they were running a CX Turbo "project" car....Which they then immediately sold having done nothing other than fit SMALLER wheels.... Have had it every month since, and found it thoroughly enjoyable....Shame it's gone....Would be interesting to know their reasons....Is there not a market for it? I'd have thought that market would be increasing at the mo myself.... PPC is a quality mag....Very interesting n all that, but covers the "upper" end of the market (Supercars for £10k etc....) and Practical Classics could be good if they featured MORE '70s/'80s stuff, LESS 40's/50's stuff (which after all isn't PRACTICAL at all, is it?) and stopped printing letters from miserable old twonks discussing what is/isn't "classic" (which IMO is entirely subjective) and what should/shouldn't appear in the mag....People like that should be strapped into their Morris 1000, driven to a disused airfield, and bombed IMO.... Personally, I'd love to see a mag dedicated to stuff from the 70s/80s....Standard and modified....How about a group test of Citroen CX, Peugeot 505, Renault 20 and Talbot Tagora? Buyers guide to the Mk1 Granada? Allegro v Citroen GS v Alfasud? Marque history of British Leyland? Mk2 Escort v Chevette v Marina....The list is almost endless! ;D Just look at the amount of TV ads/pop videos featuring stuff from this era lately....More and more people are seeing just how "cool" these vehicles are....I'm sure a market must exist! Maybe now's the time for "Original Tin" to flourish? What's this "Retro Driver" anyway? Does it exist, or is it just a figment of someone's imagination?

Baz, PC & C&S both have articles on regular '70s stuff all the time, and normal '80s cars quite frequently, so the coverage is there. In fact, almost all the cars you mention (and / or many of their newer versions) have been featured recently. PC in particular has always been a very broad church (recent issues have featured cars across virtually all age ranges), and that is what makes me buy it. As for '40s & '50s stuff not being practical, I have to disagree with that. There are many ordinary '40s & '50s cars that are capable of everyday use, and even those which arent so suitible are still worthy of inclusion as being 'practical classics' as they are affordable, easy to fix, maintain & restore (due to being so low tech) - a 'practical' classic can be totally impractical for everyday use, but still highly practical as a second / weekend car My father used a '37 Riley tourer as his everyday car for 18 months in the mid '90s. Not only would it outdrag many modern cars from the lights, but it would also cruise at 80, show an indicated 110 flat out and seat 4, all from 1500cc ;D He only stopped using it when it had to be sold due to my parents' divorce At that time, we knew someone with the saloon version, which would be used to tow a '30s Eccles caravan to weekend shows, and still cruise at 50 - without the hutch, it would cruise at 70 I also know people who use '20s cars on a daily basis - one guy in particular will happily use his '20s Vauxhall in the winter, as it's easier to wash the salt off afterwards than his 'modern' ('50s) cars. Rear wheel only brakes do scare me though However, I do agree about the 'is it / isn't it a classic' debate. I wonder what letters C&S recieved after their recent '80s turbo test of a Pug 405 vs Reggie 21 vs 'Tron BX ;D ;D

Retro Driver is being organised by Hotwire and Bryn from here.
In a nutshell, its going to be an online based 'mag' for retro enthusiasts
its been discussed on here many a time before, and I'm sure one of them will tell you more when they see this

Nobody has answered what this Retro Driver is yet! It's a forthcoming online magazine dedicated to the international retro car scene IIRC Several people from here are involved, and it sounds like it's going to be a winner ;D

How long ago did C&S do the 405/21/BX test then? I'd like to find that....

got my phone call from nicole from the mag the other week. quite gutted as ive been advertising for the past 4 months in the mag and only this month the phone has really started to ring with jobs from the advert. Never mind, ive been offered a move to either classic ford or Classics Monthly. Think ill go for classic ford and ill have to get in touch with ppc. Does any one have the publishers number?
