Military vehicle ownership: - Victimisation? In view of the ‘Cellulose paint ban’ thread (although realise there’s loop holes) and the even more recent ‘Tax 4X4’S etc’ thread started by reanimation I thought I too could comment on yet another ‘idea’ that the ‘Stalinist’ Government is conjuring up ;D. Apparently word has got round in military vehicle clubs (by carrier pigeon?) that some members/MP’s want a stop and search law brought in that gives the police the right to stop/question/search etc. anybody driving round in a ‘modern/current military’ vehicle. E.g. questions such as how did you get it and so on. Now whilst there might be cause for concern if said military vehicle was a current UK Challenger 2 tank or American M1A1 Abrams tank driving down the high street or parked up in Tesco’s car park in PRIVATE ownership (e.g. were did you get THAT!); it could be extended to people with Ex Army/‘Militaryified’ Land Rovers. Also what bobby-on-the-beat is going to know precisely what is current and what is not? Okay so a 1940’S Willy’s Jeep will be clear but what about 70’s, 80’s stuff …it may not be current in UK or US Army but still current in some third world state, so technically still current. Personally I do not mind being stopped if driving such a vehicle (but is a bit of unwanted hassle) in fact we have been stopped in the past and the coppers having always been in fit’s of laughter and think it’s great! However the bit/statement that does wind me up is they want these ‘stop and check’ rules brought in because … …it may be terrorist activity! It seems these days if the powers at be want to push something through they only have to quote ‘possible terrorist threat’ and it’s open season! So will we get busted for driving about in these:-? **As if your average terrorist is going to drive around in something as conspicuous as a classic military vehicle** P.S. Does it also mean they will have these powers towards any ‘NATO Green’ painted car that some people have done as a-bit-of-fun ?

Sounds like cobblers to me. If I was a terrorist I doubt I would choose something in Olive Drab to drive about in. When was the last time you saw anyone in that line of work that isn't sponsored by the sort of governements that get champagne receptions at The White House driving anything other than a Toyota Hi-lux? You'd have more chance of catching terrorists if you stopped white transits on H plates God, that was a long sentance - hope it made sense

Hmm, the old 'terrorism' chestnut. 'Hello sir, yes just a routine check, we have a policy of checking all vehicles with shovels on the side. We find that over 78% are on their way to Afghanistan to participate in Bin Laden tunnel construction projects'. Ridiculous.
I find its always worth remembering with these things, 'The War Against Terror' spells TWAT.*

We think they are, most people think that we are besieged on all sides by terrible, unprovoked enemies that want to steal babies and take away our green and pleasent land. It's the easiest way to govern

Big vehicle - check Sluggish - check Diesel - check Single or few occupants - check Polluting - check
That'll be a bus then. Book 'em officer. And let the historically significant ex military vehicle get on to the show it's going to, where the education of the masses into how futile warefare is is being carried out.

This is utterly ridiculous. However, I have to ask: why are the government doing this? I can't believe that they seriously think a terrorist is going to drive around in a military vehicle. Surely Big Brother isn't that stupid. So what are their motives? Is it just another excuse to stop vehicles and issue on the spot fines? I'd have thought there's enough legislation already in place to do that under the current traffic laws. So what are they thinking? If I was a terrorist, I'd drive a silver Focus............... I've found a lot of Focuses are driven by terrorists. ;D

slightly OT but a bit of a coincidence actually, i went to a fancy dress party on saturday, and a bunch of guys went as "rainbow 6", complete with homemade (fake, obviously) guns, and a homemade "tank" (2x shopping trolleys, covered in cardboard and gaffer-taped together, sprayed with camo patterns). They got stopped by a few police whilst making their way up the high street! (admittedly they were behaving a bit suspiciously, ducking from doorway to doorway, and covering each other!) do homemade tanks count under these laws?

This may just be a half truth being blown out of proportion by the rumour mill. I would like to see some proof of this policy before I get too worked up. There is already a met operation (operation camion) into the aquisition of emergency/military vehicles by terrorists and criminals. As far as I can tell this isn't aimed at vehicles such as tanks etc but more the mundane day to day vehicles than can be used to gain entry to various 'targets' such as MOD establishments.

Maybe it's true , maybe it's purely a rumour , but if it is just a rumour please can everyone STFU about it, before it gives TPTB any ideas!!
