What year is it? does it run a servo? if not, get down the scrappy and get one!
Depending what width your replicas are you'll probably be able to do what's been suggested with the fiesta calipers.
However - you can also squeeze the later type bigger discs (can't remember the disc size 8.4"?) under certain 8X10 wheels. There's a lot of the caliper that you need to cut / grind away first - but it does work. I've heard of people also doing this using the Metro Turbo setup with vented discs and twin-pot calipers...but unsure how true this is.
If you do want to go down this route I can write down some details / steps as I did this on my 1978 Clubman many moons ago.
If you decide to stick with drums and have a little to spend invest in some EBC shoes.

i wouldnt grind meat off the top of your calipers if you can help it, the other way is to have the lugs machined futher upwards into the caliper!
on a side note:- how much clearence between top of caliper and inside of wheel do you think is needed? (minimum)

This is all good useful information. My mate is converting to discs with 10's soon... pricing it up via the 'minispares' catalog comes out at £800 or so..... therefore any DIY / 'out of the box' thinking is appreciated

Just don't waste your money on S discs, Mine are shat, good job they didnt cost me much. IMHO they perform well with a decent set of discs and pads, and would be more than adequate on a std 998cc. But it's going to be pretty pointless converting to discs without fitting a servo - there just isn't enough fluid pressure without to opperate the calipers properly. Oh, and I'm pretty sure you're aware of this CC - but you can't use the drum shafts with the discs... If you want a cheap disc conversion stick with the later type bigger discs (with shafts) as they're much easier and cheaper to find 2nd hand...the downside is you probably won't be able to use your 10's.

Crikey, hot potato;) Right, car is a 1980 car, and comes with 10" minilights, other wheels are NOT an option, cos a) I love 10" minilights and b) I DON'T want to spend more money on something for look (5.5j I think!, for the record ) To be honest, the most I'd do is twin SU the engine, cooper style, and maybe a head, I'm not planning any more than a 998 ever!, it's got a webasto, there's no way I'll be thrashing it about! but there's no harm in "pepping" it up a bit... is there? Reason I want to improve brakes?, Sarah likes mini's, and no doubt is gonna half inch if from time to time.... I'd like it as safe as I can for that reason alone!, she's kind of important to me

Well based on all that CC you've got two options:
1) You stick with getting twin SU's and doing some head work. Overhaul the drums front and back (I'd buy new wheel cylinders - they're only a few quid more than the overhaul kits for them) and get some decent shoes in there.
or
2) Save your money and don't buy twin SU's / do the head work (the BHP gain you'll get from that IMHO doesn't warrent the expense) and get some Cooper discs and shafts. Again overhaul them and invest in new DECENT discs and pads. And don't forget the the brake servo (problem is this will mean you'll need a new inlet manifold for the vacuum pipe for the servo)
If I were you I'd go for option 2 - a set of Cooper discs in good enough condition for overhaul will probably set you back in the region of £80 - £120 (with shafts), what with an overhaul and a servo / inlet you'd get it all done for under £350. Which sounds expensive I know... but how much would it cost for a set of twin SU's, some head work and then getting it all set up properly!?!?

Go for 12s and discs. Then go down to Minispares and buy the conversion kit for £305. Sell old calipers, discs and pads for £30 and then swap the 12s for 10s. Sorted

10" Wellers with machined discs and mk1 fiesta callipers, you have to chop some meat off the callipers but they do the job. Don't do wellers Samyboy, got any fester MKI calipers? would I get em under 10" minilight replicas? I've got 2 sets ;D i was going to say i know of a mk1 fezza not in use you can nick some calipers off, (on the right in the sig)

They're not as thick on the ground as they once were you know I can get everything I need, no problem there, we "do" mini's on the side at work. But cooper discs don't come around that often. This one had new everything brake wise for the MOT at the end of July, so I'll probably keep it as is and just enjoy it. Unless I source some cheap cooper discs, or a setup that'll allow for 10" minilites .

totally agree, get the cooper s jobbies, get 'em refurbed and stick 'em on
i only know of 1 set of 10"s that can clear 8.4 discs and thats the cooper s rep rims, but u don't want them trust me! they have the stupidest offset u have ever seen, infact its that offset the the brakes arent even inside the wheel. which then means u can kiss ur wheel bearings goodbye. they are basically like putting 2" spacers all round and driving like that
theres hardly any difference between the 7.5's and 8.4s just the price! steer clear of 7" cooper discs as they suck soooo bad!

Just done the cooper S conversion [7.5] to my bros clubman estate, looked into doing a custom setup but the Cooper s set up came up at a resonable price and wasnt worth the effort/machinging to fit anything else. works really well far better than the drums which had a nasty tendancy to un adjusting themselves, Discs is the way to go.
