I've been researching this cos i'm going down to tens myself in the new year, and you need not stick with drums. for 100 you can be running disks and tens.
MK1 and 2 fiesta calipers fit without fuss but you'll need discs machined down 7.9" from the normal 8.4 - search fiesta caliper on minifinity.com or TMF. loads of info and even a step by step guide or two. will cost you around 80-90 quid all in.
but why bother when all you need is second hand 7.5 calipers, discs (about 20 quid?) and drive flanges (£30) to have a quick convertion over to proper mini brakes...
anybody who spends 800 on a cooper s kit from anywhere is a mug!
this is assuming that you already have 8'4 disks fitted...

depends if hes decided on 10s yet. Crikey, hot potato;) Right, car is a 1980 car, and comes with 10" minilights, other wheels are NOT an option, cos a) I love 10" minilights and b) I DON'T want to spend more money on something for look (5.5j I think!, for the record )

cost effective route: fit 8.4 set up from 12 inch (wheeled) mini, reduce discs to 7.9, read articles mentioned above and before, fit fiesta calipers.
Sorted.

You can use the bigger discs but get 10" wheels from Minispeed that`ll fit over them - Cooper S reps IIRC

I'll be honest, it's not "too" bad on drums...
Not exactly "lively", its a 998 with a stage 1 kit...

Well adjusted drums with decent shoes aren`t too bad - and they do keep the brake dust off those shiny wheels !

I reakon you'd be alright if you just fitted some decent shoes all round. EDIT: darn- beaten to it

True, well adjusted drums aren't that bad. But there is no adjustment needed with discs, so less time spent on maintenance. And seeing as you can't forget to adjust them, they stay safer longer. a side point is that discs will make the wheels stick about half an inch more so better looks as well (might want to put spacered rear drums on to match though)

regardless of how "nippy" your car is it still goes 40mph, 50mph and some 998s even go 100mph, doesnt matter how long it takes to get there cuz once ur there u still have to stop the thing!
do as said before, either source some 7.5's or go the fiesta calliper route, ill find the guide on The Mini Forum fo u. infact, why don't u join there, post this post on there and see what responses u get, there a very clever bunch.
