Sorry Daverapid i did not mean it as a lie, or indeed encouraging young norman too: just an interesting but frustrating point of how insurance companies rate your insurance higher if your a student: now i am at work (and can afford for mum and dad not to subsidise me) my insurance has gone down!

The system sucks alright! Endsleigh were shockingly competitive on normal cars in burgulary capital of Leeds, it was only when i got the dreaded group 14 XR2 I had to move home and go with Hastings on a classic policy-great with quotes bad at admin BTW, never had to claim, both those two worth a shot.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

I dunno whether it's worth it or not..... I've had my ncb disappear into a black hole 3 times and had to go back to square one. It's all gravy now though, as I am justified and ancient. Sorry moooo mooo Anyway had the same thing happen to me twice and it ticks me right off Only thing that stops me buying a certain BMW 735i is bloody NCD is AWOL while they sort my last incident out I mean for pitys sake he was - curse word - Driving way too fast for the corner - Polish (well thats not a crime I know) An he's been banned as a result and it's over a year and the ins companies have still not sorted it out!!! Rant over

I've heard of investigations on crashed cars where they've refused to pay out as they had strong reason to believe the main driver is one of the named ones but I suppose a lot would be rumour stirred up by the insurance companies themselves. nope its true. fronted policies are a big no-no.the insured must be the main driver.we get them a lot when mummy sends pugsley off to college with a shiny new car to play with insured in her name with him as a named driver, crash happens way oop north in a uni town, pugsley's car registered address is darn sarf, bingo no pay out,its in the t&c small print. your better off being stung for one year and earning some ncd of your own than losing your car for a bit of 'fraud' to save some dosh.

I agree with the situations you describe above. However, I was previously insured as a named driver (dad was policyholder) but also declared on the documentation as the principle user. This was 100% legit, even though I later lived at a different address, because the insurers had been informed and were cool with it. They even used to send me a cover note each year (to my own address, not policyholder's) so I could get my residents' parking permit!!! Basically the bottom line is, if in doubt declare it & above all, don't try to be clever with them.

Footman James are usually pretty good. Did you get the quote off their website? It tends to be wrong and you get a cheaper quote if you phone them.

My dad took out a policy where it was in his name with his no claims but I was the main driver. Still worked out at half the price of what I was going to pay. Buuuut I am only now building ups some no claims whereas if i'd had my own I would have two years now.

Wow, going a little OT, but bloody hell, time flies. Ickle Wob, enquiring about car insurance. Only seems two minutes ago that 14 year old Rob was being welcomed to various mailing lists, telling us about his Rapid him and his dad were getting resprayed. Then later his Sister using it at Uni to keep it on the road. Then later the replacement rapid. Now Rob is about to join us on the road in a Skud of his own. It brings a tear to my eye, and a lump to my throat and suddenly I feel very old.

I keep saying to people to go on their own name for the first year. But tbh I went on my mum's as a named driver for a couple of years and my quote now for the capri with mods and mods in progress declared is £700-odd and I can pay it monthly with adrian flux - blinder!

Yeah. Good link. . Sort it out, just cos it's your birthday doesn't give you carte blanche to feed us duff linkz PS.... paying annually is all well and good.... I did that once, only for my insurer to go bankrupt 2 months later... first I knew was when it was on 'Watchdog', and I'd been technically driving without adequate cover for 6 months.

Yeah they stick a reasonable rate on it to be fair, though probably next year's renewal will be so low I'll just pay it off in one go anyway. Some of those rates are insane though, 25%?!

It works out 100 pounds more with flux - but to me that's a pretty decent rate for how much more convenient monthly payments are compared to lump sum payment.
(how many stoodents you know have 700 odd quid laying about)
