my dad has been offered a very reasonable quote to insure himself on my Rapid with me as a named driver. I just say, it is very tempting at half the price of the cheapest quote i have had for my own cover, but i am slightly worried. if i cock up and writre someone else's car off then they will be claiming off my dad's insurance and he wont be very happy. its just a bit tricky for that reason. i'm after your opinions...would you go on your dad's policy for your first year of motoring?

I was going to but then I decided to stump up £2K to insure myself under my own name, now on the second year and it's £900 odd which is a fair old drop! I just try to see the first year as a big one-off fee!!
I think the general opinion is that insurers are wising up to it nowadays and it's not worth the hassle.

If I had a dad then I would be tempted. Trouble is though you won't be building up your no claims bonus,so you'll end up paying in the end. I guess it depends on the money available when you need insurance. Aparantly a few companies have become wise to it and are stamping it out...anyone know if that's true?

I've heard of investigations on crashed cars where they've refused to pay out as they had strong reason to believe the main driver is one of the named ones but I suppose a lot would be rumour stirred up by the insurance companies themselves.

Try, putting him on your policy, might help and chances are it wont be any extra. play all the tricks too, if its just for fun insure for only that, work out how many miles you'll do, again only for fun it wont be loads. add some security, do a pass plus. then ring every fugger, two days on the phone might get a better quote. I know its a nightmare. is there any skud club insurance? insurers like clubs

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Mine was 1800 quid in the first year including mods (TPFT, no passplus). Dropped to 550 quid with one years NCB. At the end of the day if you avoid the sting now, you'll still have to cough up for it later, although slightly reduced. I'm insured on my dad's Benz now and then on his policy and have no problems - I take care of it and drive it appropriately - so you could get on OK provided you didn't do anything young and foolish

do they not liked named drivers doing the majority of the miles then? there is footman james who are supposed to be Skoda 'specialists' but the quote from them was somewhere around the 3k mark...

i laughed out loud at some footman james quotes for me!
rob i would not go under ur dads insurance: he seems to have a lot of vehicles and rely on his no claims bonus.... skodas (esp. rear engined ones) are fun in a kinda tyre squeling hooning about on wet roads day and this is where u will slip up! i paid £750 through tesco for th insurance for me on a provisional! and with a yrs no claims it would have halved.,,, personally i think its a false economy

shop everywhere, like anything these days if you are looking for a bargain it could be anywhere. Is the skud modified? i forget. if not you are free to get internet quotes call quotes and shop around. don't forget you don't need fully comp - specially if your excess is £400 or summat, or you believe you skud is woth loads.
Its so wrong that Bike NCB's are not transferable, they should be worth double years IMO.

Limited miles helps, vehicle value doesnt usually don't think, not when were taking hundreds anyway. Insurance is risk business, ideally they want you to cough up and never crash or make a claim, but your area, age, sex, use, amount of use (miles), time of use, commuting, car type regarding security of model, performance, safety and desirability. being a young male your losing, owning a classic and being in a club with a year on your licence that helps. Just got a new quote for the GF with Diamond, which was very impressive, they do general insurance possibly under a different name. worth a go. Just try everyone, als of you are a student still, sorry cant remember, endsleigh are worth a shot. they offer upto 30% off student discount, specially over the phone.

Well in my personal experience, i would say yes do it. How can they prove that you are the main driver? They cant!
I got insured for the first couple of years on my mums policy, although i didnt get any no claims bonus the amount saved in the first two years is more than the amount saved with you own no claims. Its your age thats the main factor and after driving a couple of years the price will drop significantly regardless of no claims.
One thing though, please please don't go for that new box thing that tracks your car. Its the begining of 1984!

I dunno whether it's worth it or not.....
I've had my ncb disappear into a black hole 3 times and had to go back to square one.
It's all gravy now though, as I am justified and ancient.

I'm old - which is how I've just insured my (rather splendidly fast and powerful ;D) new daily driver for just over three-hundred notes. I don't envy you youngsters, my first insurance was £300 on a Herald convertible...no specialist insurers, just the brokers at the end of the road from me - that was TPF&T though.

Rich Would highly recommend not telling insurance companies a lie...if you're found out you're in the sh1t, and in the event of a claim you'll be in double sh1t.
