it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

I'd like one. A candidate for 'rustiest car of the late 80s'.

Whoops! Replied via the Montego thread but here goes again: find a Ballade 1500 manual, have a drive of it and thrash the t*ts off it. Bet you come back laughing, they`re bloody quick cars. Rust wise look out for the top 1mm of the bootlid, that`s quite likely the only place it won`t have any. Victor Meldrew had a Honda and Hyacinth Bucket had a Rover, I think.

Saw a mint red one recently, 213 driven by a flat-capper. You don't see them much at all, also with the later generation (early 90s) how often do you see a povo-3 door one with the badge on the C-Pillar! Very cheesy. The 5 door ones are all over though.

the later ones are good, the modest L reg, 5 door one was ace, much better than the crapy new ens.

After bleating on in the Montego thread, I'll keep it relevant here. I bought a 216 VDP for a ton in 1999. I did a couple of thousand miles in it and then used it in an article demonstrating the effects of drink driving... It was cheap, souless and did the job. I cannot remember anything about it that made me want to save/enjoy it/buy another one.

Generally the reason aside from rust not to get one, also a god reason to get one and modify the living daylights out of it!!! If PPC can do a Roller, a Rover project should be interesting! Wonder how tunable those 213 (cheap tax engines are) or a Balade 1500, thanks Cavmad

I quite like the early square type ones like the Honda Ballade, particularly in Vitesse form. The later post 1988 3/5 door/Honda Concerto types leave me cold though, but I can see the coupe (Tomcat) being a very desirable machine one day.

Could be way off with that one, but if there is then you could go Rover Tomcat turbo coupe route or VTec the mother. White, stripped, caged to hell, slammed on deep dish rims, camber... It might just work.

We bought a Honda Civic equivalent of one of these last year for $600, road legal, and the thing was an absolute HOOT. The 1.5 D15 engine was mega awesome, really willing and curse word did it rev or what.
As long as they are EA-H Honda Civic based (which I'm certain they are!) then you open up a myriad of relatively easy engine swaps. I know it would be quite involved, but imagine one with a B18C-R (Type R Integra DC2) engine in it! Would be absolutely ludicrously funny!

Victor Meldrew type `R` sure has a nice ring to it and would be a blast taking on all the boy racers at the lights. Even better if sprayed hearing aide beige and complete with obligatory tartan rug and nodding dog on back shelf. Come on someone, go for it! Ps later 214i/216 versions were awful I`m afraid. The 1.4i `did the headgasket` (which meant hundreds in engine repairs and then it was actually worse than before apparantly)-I know as the `k` series 1.4 soldiered on for years and sitting round the back of mine right now is my 1998 214i with only 25,000 miles on it and a knackered head

My mum had one of these (a 213) to replace her Mk3 Escort when it died. I used to drive it a bit and usually in a "like I stole it" fashion but such is youth It did its job and the engine was quite revvy but otherwise it just felt like a modern box on wheels to me. I seem to think that most had/have half the rear bumper hanging off, including my mums. Anyway, here's a pic of one that lives (but doesn't seem to move) over the road from us. A Vitesse as well! And with intact rear bumper!!
