Not wanting to derail bradders for sale thread... Pogmeister was saying that vans will eventually devalue because : As more and more people become discontented having paid the thick end of twenty grand for something that's supposed to have been fully restored, but has actually been fully bodged. Thats the thing though, there will be a slight dip, but these vans have gone into collector territory now. What will happen with people not being able to afford the thick end of twenty grand for a van is that they will move on and buy Commers, Transits or HiAces (I've already seen a few surf style Hiace in and around the Gower).. because they are the same price that VW campers once were.. Or they move onto Bays and T25s... but seeing as Bay windows are now going for 4-5-6k for reasonable ones... I don't know how long that'll last.

I think it is a fad - for the rat look anyway. People will realise that they are paying huge sums of money for what's usually a shonky van.
I love the way they look - but come on the figures that have been banded about for them are just unbelievable.

I`ve got a mate who`s hoping to find a restorable lhd Splitty for under a grand - I have explained that he`s having a laugh but he`s seen one on ebay apparently .........
From my searches you`re looking at £3-4k + for a "project"

Do you think that eventually the merit of split-screens etc will become de-valued, purely BECAUSE of the daft prices?
Will they not become unfashionable (and hence values drop) because they become a toy for the very wealthy rather than something attainable for many?

That's an excellent point pog - the people who campers used to be associated with simply can't afford them any more - so now you get the pretend hippies/surfers all using them. Last time I was in cornwall all I saw were hundreds of 80's transporters.

I think they've moved from cult to classic status...
I do think that rat vans will loose some of their value and return to project prices (which will still be 6-7k), unless they are spot on solid underneath with surface patina, like the Linde Bus.
When you have vans on display at events like Goodwood etc. you know they have moved into a different realm. Right now they have a foot in both, but I think eventually I think the prices will settle, and they will settle near the top. They are no longer a starter enthusiasts car, they are a long term enthusiasts car.
It'll take a recession or something like that to drop prices back down.

Either which way, there's still room for one in my 'fantasy garage'. But unlikely that i'll be owning one for real for a very, very long time.

It's true about wedges, they are going up and up... I'll never own a splittie. I love the look of them, but they are just too impractical for me, SO uncomfortable to sit in let alone drive! ;D ONE day I'll sort my life enough to get another van again, my plan is for a Barkas next year. So far, so good

I hoped to live in one like a gypsy 4 years back, when my dad was annoying me and i was stuck there at home. a mate of a mate was selling one between 1-2 k, it never materialised, the prices these are going for is crazy, just like the other stuf like escorts, AE86's. What should be a Cool modest piece of transport has ironically IMO turned in to classic status! cool dude vans in this vein is the wedge now, only a matter of time for these. prices should pop a bit like beetles have, icant see them getting any rarer but who'll have the disposable cash for em in future decades?

we used to be paying £15k for a shoddy van - my local mister fixit had one he'd restored and wanted that price for it and it was terrible underneath, all dodgy patches and grot.
i think these days they're being restored to a lot better standard, a quick browse around bugjam sees a lot higher standard of work and more 'nice touches' instead of just conveyor belt red 'n' brown panel vans with deluxe trim.
remember when Beetles were fetching 6-7-8-9k for a 'show car' condition one? what happened then? everyone realised the daftness of it all, stopped buying them, and prices returned to planet earth. In the family camping field at bugjam there was a roadworthy, taxed and tested '70 - needed a bit of elbow grease but was a daily driver. stickered up for £500.
wedges are the next target so get buying them if you wanna make a profit. I can see splitty prices levelling off though and starting to fall, it's not like they're rare machines. it's just the media effect, jamie bloody oliver got one so they're worth millions.

the reason I got a wedge, wasn't cos it was "cool", infact when I got mine, they were shuned by most of the "scene", infact some quarters still do... Do I care? I got it cos it drove, rode, went and stop SOOO much better than a bay, AND cos it was, in relative terms CHEAP. But they are on the up , good for me I guess, but not for others who like em but don't yet have one. "the scene" has kinda lost its way, they aren't cheap affordable and fun anymore True "rats" are great, cos you KNOW what you are getting, its not hidden by shod, filler and shiny paint, which is why they hold a fair premium. "rat looks" are curse word, cos they ARE shoddy curse word repairs, but people don't get "rat" think "ooohh thats cool" and pay over the odds for a snotter.... Again, scene loosing its way somewhat.

I'm sure Jamie Oliver bought one because they were already fashionable.
TBH if someone were in the market for a camper van, or something to carry surfboards in they they would have bought a wedge or transit or merc sprinter if they wern't style concious.
Splitties were never unfashionable. They have just become more highprofile over the last few years... I doubt you'll ever be able to pick one up for a couple of grand again, unless its really rotten.

I know where there is one that is really, really rotten. It's got a tree growing through it. Offers in the region of £1000 ;D

Yeah I certainly think that t25's are on the up. However I definetly think bargains can be still had. For example we only paid £250 yes £250 for our square lighted t25 autohomes Kamper. Needed a clutch then it went straight through the mot. We've had it Sprayed and the tiny bits of grot sorted and all in including the purchase of the van we've spent..........£1300!

WTF?, its a shoddy single cab petrol FFS. £700 tops.

I can't see prices falling all that much. OK, so at the moment they are the height of cool in certain circles, but they are never going to be completely unfashionable. I've seen more Wedges around Newquay recently, plus a load of other stuff being pressed into service as "Surf Wagons" - VW Passat estates, a Honda Acty ( ), Subaru Brats.... people who can't afford a splitty (and that's a lot of people!) are turning to alternatives. Like has been said, Wedges are being bought by people unable to afford a splitty or a bay (or just for something more different) but the prices of those are going to go up for sure, particularly as they have a better chance of being accepted in "the scene" due to the VW badge and aircooled engine. I can't see a Bedford CF, for example, rocketing in value due to "scene tax" because it just won't ever be accepted that much. I've completely lost the thread of what I was talking about now so I'm gonna stop typing

Might I just say that HiAce's are the future... it'll only take a couple of top ones to be out and about before people turn to them in force

Supply & demand.
Loads of vehciles go through cycles of value. I rmemeber when you had to spend £1500 to get a rough 4 door moggie minor with an MOT. Now you can get one for £500. The days of nice Minors changing hands regularly for £3500 - £5000 seem to be over. I heard like £9000 for a convertible a few times back then. Now you are able to buy a convert for £3000 in nice order.
Beetles also seemed to go the same way, although I didn't pay that much attention.
The people with the fashion money move on to something else and noone else will pay the inflated prices so the values drop.
pre war vintage car values have fallen in the last few years, in the last 10 years valuesof 50s yanks have fallen as everyone has been scrabbling to trade them in for muscle cars, next big fad.
Cars are not a good "investment"
