The price these make now is purely linked to the lifestyle thing and there are obviously enough people who want to buy into it with enough money (or willingness to go into debt) to pay for them. A similar thing has happened with hot rodding in this country in recent years. Back in the 90's even top show cars could be had for well under 10k once they'd done the rounds for a few years. Now people expect closer to the build cost when they sell one. It is now not unusual to see ads in the back of Custom Car with price tags of over 20k and they sell too. There is just more money (and/or debt) around in the scene. I feel with the VW's that prices will stabilise and fall (a bit) at some point once people realise that as a car they are just not worth that much. Hope no-one takes this the wrong way but (in this country) I don't think they are comparable to the true "English" classic (E-type, Aston etc) and would be the first to fall should there be another market crash. Hmmmm. rambling again......

Its a cheap bit of fun, and its not like they didn't make many of em Isn't that the point,.. it isn't a cheap bit of fun But ironically it represents a cheap fun lifestyle which is why people pay so much for them. Paying more for stone washed pre-torn jeans anyone!

Well, I've got little to add. Except that I know a guy in his late 30s who's looking for a splittie or a bay window camper - he doesn't care which. He has a couple of kids, and a wife, and a good job, and wants something to go to France and Spain in for camping holidays two or three times a year. So he 'phones me up and says, "Right, I want one of these old VWs, and it's got to be spotless. I don't care if I have to get a rough one and restore it, but I'd rather get a good one, do you know of any for sale?" "What's your budget?" I ask, having seen a nice bay for sale locally. "About £35,000" he replies. At which point I damn near fall over. He then adds "I could up that a bit for the right one". £35,000? Not much hope for us normal folk! (Not that I'm worried, I'd buy a mk1 Transit and bosh the other £33,000 off my mortgage!)

I don't know if I'm just getting old and cynical but I don't think VW shows used to be about who'd spent the most on their vehicle did they? this is one of the reasons ive moved away from the dub scene. things aint like they were 10 years ago, and i don't like it. time to move on.

trouble is with looking outside the scene.... eventually it'll dry up.
it's great when you can find a splitty for £1000, in good nick, but when you come to sell it where are you going to go? you'd be mad to sell it anywhere except in 'the scene' for £10k.... that's one more overpriced bus in the system.
it's nobody's fault really as you'd be clinically insane to turn down a 5-figure sum for something you paid very little for, but it's just the way it's going to go.

I love this thread! Basically i love my bus but would never buy another split unless i came into alot of money. I bought mine at the right time in the right place and yes it was still stupidly expensive at 7k but by todays standards was an absolubte steal! I'm not fussed about what i paid because its going to be in my life untill the day i die! What grips my curse word though is the huge range of traveller scum out there selling absolubte snotters that are made almost entirely of clag as so called 'rat look' There are genuine rat lookers out there that are uber solid and well presented with faded paint, original logos etc But then there are the crappers. Ive seen rotten to the core bare twisted shells being advertised at 4k Most of my freinds drive bays and all aspire to owning a split but there blinded by the scene and talk of remortgaging to buy a rat looker. Whats the point? I'm confidennt myself that the bubble will burst soon and some people with more money than sense are going to be left looking like right tw@s. Bay windows are fast becoming out of most peoples reach now. This months ultra vw has 2 bays at studid prices over 10k Dare i say it but maybe a t4 will be the next hot ticket? Ive had 3 bays and my split which oddly enough is the most comfortable and practicle of the lot, and i have always stumbled uppon good solid bays at less than 1k in need of love. My current 78 bay has cost alot of money in the long run but is worth it as it was a solid and original 1 owner bus. I do intend to sell at a good price of 6k when it comes back from paint but i will be happy in the knowledge that its buyer will have landed themselves a sweet bus at the right price I love the scene but hate to see good people being screwed by the unsrupilous sellers out there. Take someone with you who knows theese before you part with your hard earned and enjoy. Remember a car is only worth what people will pay for it! RANT OVER!!! ;D

I like splitty and bays...they a cool looking vans but as I'm not VW fanatic, to me that's all they are... just another old van. I wouldn't give you £4k for a splitty ley alone £20k because while they are a cool looking old van, from a technical standpoint, they are not a very good one. Fact is that while a splitty might fetch £15k, doesn't mean it's worth £15k. As a van... as metal and nuts and bolts it's worth no more than a Commer as it is no better from a purely technical standpoint but as we know the world of fashion drive people to ridiculous lengths to be hip and those with the moolah will pay whatever it takes to be cool until the next big thing comes around. I do applaud those who own Splitties for the right reasons... because they love them... not because they want to belong and be fashionable. Personally, I would much rather spend a couple of grand on one of these, if only I could find one -Ed

I love my dubs and especially the Splitties. They may drive like curse word and be uber-expensive at the moment but that didnt stop me going out and getting another one a few years back. Thankfully I knew people in the van scene and got a few feelers out before being pointed to my one. I feel very fortunate in that I got a really solid and low milage example for less than 6k. When I started looking about for a new dub though I was budgeting for around the 3k mark. I thought I'd get something fairly decent as my previous Devon had only cost me 1.5k but that was over 10 years ago and my god how things had changed Prices for vans is rediculous really, I love my ratty vans but I wouldnt pay 4k for a rotten van that someones pulled out of god knows where just to sell it on, and asking 30k+ is just outrageuos. That to me is just someone possibly out there for a quick buck and not someone who has the same attitude towards dubs as the majority, If I spend all that time and money restoring a van up to a 30k+ standard I wouldnt want to sell it... Id not even take the curse word on the road for fear of damage Its a shame how the prices have gone, after all the original Beetle was designed to be a car for the people, its counteracting what Volkswagen actually means
