Seeing iRocco's Vauxhall XE engine thread got my cogs whirring on this. As we know, popular engines to transplant often mean the price goes way up. Stuff like the Vauxhall red top, Nissan CA18 and SR20, Ford Zetec, Toyota 4AGE and Rover K-Series. OK, so some of them can still be picked up for buttons, but they're getting harder to find cheap.
So... what other engines are out there? I'm thinking of stuff that's not normally transplanted, but could still give a retro motor some extra "go".
Here are a few of my thoughts...
Rover 820 Turbo (M16?) - probably cheaper than a 1.8 K Alfa 155 2.0 Twinspark - 150bhp out of the box BMW 320i e36 lump - Straight six and 148bhp. May be pricey due to the badge though. Jaguar XJ6 3.2 - 6 pot and 200bhp. Couple of hundred for a complete car. 2.9 packs 165bhp Daewoo Nubira 2.0 - 134bhp twink (as discussed on another thread). I reckon you could get one for about £20!
Anyone have any other thoughts?

Jag XJ6 engine is a big old unit. Would need a big engine bay to fit into. The 2.9 isn't worth bothering with, may as well go for as big a capacity as possible, as they are all physically the same size. Late 4 ltrs with on plug coils gave about 250 BHP. They also did the straight six supercharger that had about 330 BHP and loads of torque.

Aw b0llocks ;D I meant the Nexia . Which isn't all that powerful (1.5, 75bhp). What was that Daewoo twincam lump someone posted? The Nexia is only 8v and seems pretty cakka . But that Nubira lump does look alright! No idea what it's based on though - could even be a Daewoo-homebrewed engine!

How about a V6 from a Suzuki Grand Vitara? I know nothing about them apart from the 2.7 is about 185bhp. I bet it's very light and compact. Another Nissan lump which nobody in the UK has used is the older 2.4 petrol Terrano engine. That's a KA24E, a really strong, torquey 12v engine. One could be bolted up to a Nissan D21 pickup gearbox (Z series engine) for any RWD install. They are quite tunable and pretty bullet proof. They can even be turbo'd. Here's one on side draughts in a 510...

I drove one of those V6 Vitaras and I have to say I was impressed with how powerful it was! Didn't know they had that much power. I did still feel like a hairdresser though!

Something which is surpricingly cheap when I have seen them flogged on the bay (all of twice) is the F20 engine from honda. It was replaced by the F22 in 2004(?) and is not quite so wanted nowadays. Still 205bhp of vtec porn can't be bad.
The F22 option is what I am eventually hoping to stick in the viva - once I get a couple of years of NCB.

imo the best place to look for the future of popular engine conversions is the kit car world.
Busa powered new shape Micra anyone?

I think vans are a good source of big petrol engines! Like Racer with his 1500 Hiace engine (or soon to have). I started thinking what engine is in my vauxhall Midi- its a 2.0 Isuzu engine, and I reckon with the right gearbox and in a light, aerodynamic car it would be quite a nippy unit! There must be more petrol vans out there with good engines, and no one wants petrol vans really so they should be cheap!

One of Mr Bo11ox' faves - the VW 2.3 V5. Just a bit more leftfield than the old 2.8 V6 - and V5s are getting cheaper all the time because people never knew where they fit in the model line up.
Warbles like a good'un too - which, at the end of the day is what counts!

I was going to suggest the mazda 1.8 quad cam v6, seems like a good engine, would make the best soudning screamer! Ive got another project in my head, its been there for a while brewing away. Engine? Its a 6 cylinder and comes from a honda, flat confuguration 1.8 just like a minature porsche engine! Comes from 500kg motorbike so should be good for a car, even the 'box and clutch. Base is going to be a caddy shell, rear wheel drive, and a spaceframe underneath. All in the aid of drifting! GOLDWING! Two turbos and no exhausts J

2.0 five cylinder from the Fiat Coupe, they were also fitted in Mareas and Bravos. We had 2 Mareas 2.0 at the Fiat dealership I worked at. looked like minicabs , but could go like stink, with a lovely bark from the engine.

Its quite tame in the goldwing, but 1.8 with forged crank and rods straight cut 5 speed sequential, and a nice hemi 2 valve head. Should be ripe for turbocharging with megasquirt, mabe 150-200 bhp? The stock bike is like 350KG, with 40kg of luggage space, and two fat american riders were close to car weight! There is acutally a sweedish chap who has made a recovery system for motorway emergencys, can tow 5500lbs behind a stock 'wing! (don't know how much that is in kg?) The volvo 5v cylinder and the fiat 5 cylinder are both ripe for car conversions, gotta love that 5 cylinder warble J
