bike engines are OK for very light cars.
Its a shame GM don't sell their GMPP stuff though Vauxhall or "Chevrolet" dealers like they do in the US. GMPP built an 800 BHP Ecotec a while back....
Mazda MX5 1.6 is a revvy little unit and the right way around, the 1.8 has a bit more torque but not as much character.

Depends on what you call pennies. 300 for any sort of decent one - even the pinto boat anchors.

Well the goldwing engine gives over 100ftlb stock at 2000rpm, its a torque monster as far as bike engine go. Remember it has to haul around a 350kg bike and fat american riders! Once it is turbocharged this figue will at least double, torque should be no problem.
Also compare it to a hybausa engine, considered to be the best bike engine for a car, this makes 100ftlb aswell, but at 6250rpm!

2.0 8 valve cavalier lump with a turbo stuck onto it,first one cost me £1200 to build inc fresh turbo, cav turbo rods and pistons intercooler etc and it ran a 13.7 @113mph in a road car with remoulds, bent steering arm and T.C.A . would have gone quicker had i noticed it was all bent before i stripped it to build my blue one DOH!!! Best thing about it was peoples faces when they realised it was 8 valve,it was as if they had just stepped in dogshit ;D

I was going to suggest the mazda 1.8 quad cam v6, seems like a good engine, would make the best soudning screamer! Ive got another project in my head, its been there for a while brewing away. Engine? Its a 6 cylinder and comes from a honda, flat confuguration 1.8 just like a minature porsche engine! Comes from 500kg motorbike so should be good for a car, even the 'box and clutch. Base is going to be a caddy shell, rear wheel drive, and a spaceframe underneath. All in the aid of drifting! GOLDWING! Two turbos and no exhausts J I've been waiting for an opportunity to post this... Inspiration for BlownImp mkIII? *n

zOmg!1111! at the placement of those turbos. At least you won't have to worry about the rebuild bill if they fail!

How to burn your arms in an instant! No I'm thinking two bigger turbos, carbon plenum chambers, dump pipes out the bonnet!
That bike must be hellish to ride!

Depends on what you call pennies. 300 for any sort of decent one - even the pinto boat anchors. look on ebay, I'm in the game for buying a zetec at the moment. 142bhp zetec powered mondeo, with under a 100k and 6 months mot - £100 buy it now. theres LOTS of them. ive just turned down a 157bhp zetec for £400 cos i thought it was too much! ;D pintos and red top s are slowly going up in value, whereas zetecs can only decrease for at least another 5 years

Somewhat predictably, i'll back the VAG corner...
Agree with the V5 has a beautiful engine note, 170 brake and a good chunk of torque
My offering is the 1400 16v polo/lupo engine (not the 1600 though) - nice and light, 100 brake isnt bad, and will rev to 8k on a standard bottom end, so good tuneability

J Anyone remember 'in progress' pics of a LHD Golf with what appeared to be a T4 in the nearside rear of the engine bay and angled straight-pipe and screamer pipe exiting from the bonnet right in front of the passenger? It was running a healthy squirt of passing gas to spool that mahoosive turbo. *n

See theres too much done by someone else, i hate having to make other peoples abortions into what i want! I need to get a new goldwing engine and box from honda, then start afresh, subaru back axle, double wishbone front setup. I cant think about this too much, ive got to finish the imp first!
Has anyone done any tuning to the VW 5 cylinder unit? I wonder what the capabilities are?

BMW 320i e36 lump - Straight six and 148bhp. May be pricey due to the badge though. sack that off straight away! get a 2.5 for about the same money and are just as good in reliability. few tuning tricks for m50/m52 (vanos variant) engines; 2.8 crank and rods fit in, so no nicosil 328 rubbish (buy a bore worn engine for nowt), 325i placcy intake manifold with a 328 flowed throttle body makes about 210 bhp. get on us ebay and get us spec 3.0m3 cams (its just a bored 328 engine over there), they are the same specs as shrick cams and half the price (also they never wear out), just make sure you get a vanos engine for them. euro spec m3 multi throttle bodies fit if you run a remote oil filter. e30 318is engine makes a good straight swap, around 140bhp and it runs on 4 wires

The rover 820 turbo engine isnt a bad one but not sure what (if any) RWD boxes bolt straight to it, which puts people off.
Zetec engines are still cheap if they are still inside a mondeo or escort but there are some very ropey badly serviced engines around at the lower end of the price range.
I quite like the nova gsi 8V engine and think it would be a nice swap for a chevette as its a bit lighter than the 1.8 and 2.0 blocks. Been done quite abit over the years though.
The mazda V6 1.8 is not an engine I would generally consider for a transplant. Super smooth from tickover to 7000rpm but there is no feeling of power with them. Again thats hardly surprising for a 1.8 though. Might be a nice engine for a really lightweight car. I think the 2.5 from the MX6 is the same engine but quite a bit more powerful, so probably better going for that.
Primera GT 2.0 16V engine is quite a nice one. 150bhp with a fair amount of torque. Plentiful and fairly cheap.
Peugeot/Citroen 1.8 16V engine I think would be a nice swap for a sunbeam or avenger. Cheap and easy to get hold off and useable power for a daily driver.

The mazda engine look to be quite a big engine as well but I think if it was took out of the bay it might not be so bad This ones in a xedos 9 in a salvage yard at the minute £410 for the complete car
