Walking into work today I noticed a lorry go passed with Wolseley written down the side I wondered if it was related to the car company? www.wolseley.co.uk/corp/index.htmlI found out the other day that Alvis went into making tanks. What happened to the rest of the British car companies?

Don't BMW own most of the names now? Or did they all die off/get sold to the Chinese when MG Rover went pop?
But yeah... where are:
Jensen Marcos Singer
for a start?

Marcos are still very much alive. They came in with a brief to redesign the Mini Marcos, using BMW mini bits. Singer got absorbed by rootes/chrysler/talbot/peugeot and the Jensen brand is resurrected every few years - a CV8 proposal was shown last year.

BMW bought out Triumph, pretty much their only rival brand. They still have plans to re-launch it, a GT6 was proposed recently and the new Z4 hardtop thingy looks a little like one.. ....apparently it was going to be based on the Mini though just wrong! Jensen CV8? Thought they built quite a few of those, aunt had a hand in helping with design of that, remember seeing one at the 3December show. There's a few about, come up on eBay now and then ;D

At the risk of sounding sto0pid... Are Triumph motorcycles anything to do with the cars any more? I thought some rich dude bought the Jensen name some years back... no idea what they're up to now. I think BMW scooped up a load of old British marques when the bought MG Rover, so I suppose the Chinese now own them. What about AC?

I think the motorcycle and car business separated in the 1930s...not really sure if it was an entity or not

Invicta was re-launched a few years ago and I saw one recently, possibly at the Ace. I met one of the guys responsible when it was still on the drawing board just after he'd come out of a wine fueled meeting with some big names in the car business (boss of VW etc.).
Don't forget the Rootes group got absorbed by Talbot, Peugeot etc. There were special "Rapier" edition 306's a few years ago so they obviously still want to use some of the names.

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.

BSA - yes, they made cars - ended up as part of Triumph or Norton?
Reliant - bankrupted, 3 or 4 times. Now long dormant.
Jensen - bankrupt, name revived a couple of times but nothing to to with the original company.
Marcos - still in business
TVR - still in business
Rootes Group was made up of:
Hillman Humber Singer Sunbeam Sunbeam-Talbot Commer
bought by Chrysler in the late 1960s sold to Peugoet, remaned Talbot and "absorbed" during the late 80s.
Vauxhall (& Bedford) bought by GM in the 1930s. Slowly morphing into Opel/Daewoo.
Lotus - still owned by Kia?
Aston Martin - owned by Ford
Rolls Royce - owned by BMW
Bentley - Owned by VAG
Gilbern - bankrupt
Gordon Keeble - bankrupt
Berkley - bankrupt
Dellow - stopped making cars and concentrated on engineering. No idea what happened after that.
Morgan - still in business
HRG - another one that diversified into other markets. No idea what happened.
Jowett - bankrupt

Are Healey still part of BMW then? Or gone to the Chinese? I remember seeing more than one "BMW to revive the Big Healey" headline in the past..

The half arsed attitude of the workforce, the it'll do attitude, and companies being dictated to by politicians who neither understood nor cared about engineering and build quallity killed it...
at least that's what I'm told..

Healey was always owned by the Healey family - it was only licensed to BMC. There are some current developents regarding a Healey car: www.hfiautomotive.com/However other consortiums have tried to claim to have the use of the Healey name, but only HFI appears to have the cooperation of the Healey family. Riley is owned by BMW IIRC, Armstrong Siddeley stopped car production and concentrated on aero engines instead - now part of R-R Aerospace Alvis is now part of GKN

Isn't TVR owned by a Russian?
Also, I think Marcos is owned by another European manufacturer too, as opposed to a Brit.
