I don't mean to offend anybody, but it's another one of those threads that stems from a 'supposed' situation, giving rise to lots of 'yeah, then this happened to me'. It's not about retro cars at all.
As for brake testing??? And getting out of the car, 90% of the time it works??? Come on guys, if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.
It is through my own choice that I drive, through making the choice I've accepted that on the road there will be people who will not like me because of what I drive, how I drive or a million other unfathomable reasons which are best left to them.
If that means I have to pull over to let somebody past, so be it, if it means I take the long way home to avoid being followed, so be it, sit and wait for somebody who can't drive, so be it. It's the world we live in, however unfair or unjust that may seem.
All I've learnt along the way is to get wherever you're going safely and in one piece. I believe this was the sentiment behind the original post.

Amate of mine a couple of months ago was on the M6 doing about 80 in the "fast" lane, some cock in a Mondeo was tailgating him, and actually overtook him on the central reservation! (the bit just north of Stoke)
Theres some crazys out there. I've been followed/chased before when I was younger and did the "brake jab" on a tool following close in a Peugeot. Big bloke he was as well.

I totally agree with bryn's views on "keeping the peace", ie not retaliating to knobheads who get angry for no real reason. What I didn't understand is why it's a subject that we shouldn't discuss using our own experiences. Anyway, don't mess with my little Power-ranger while on the road or he'll use his super powers on you! ;D

Kenneth Noye. i don't remember Kenny Noye actually admitting he was responsible for the guys death - and from the press reports it was self defence anyway thats like sticking a bakewell tart in the biscuit tin - makes all the hard biscuits soft

I must be missing something about Kenneth noye - he was convicted of killing that Cameron guy by stabbing him in a road rage attack, end of story surely. Stabbing folk is rarely a good self-defence tactic, and he's hardly going to just come out and admit it is he for goodness sake.

It was NOT about road rage. However, it didn't suit the prosecution's case to bring the full story to light, and the defence certainly weren't going to as it would provide motive.

Er fellas...
Since when did you believe a convicted killer (and he was a convicted killer btw) when he claimed 'self defence'? And since when does going back to your car, getting a 9in knife out of the glove box, walking back and then stabbing someone count as 'self defence'.
It *was* Road Rage.
Macho stuff will get you hurt/killed. End of.

Having been off work for 4 months on sick as a result of someone running into the back of my car a few years back, I'd be very careful about doing the "brake test".................. In case anyone's interested, Sierra's can stop a lot quicker than a Vauxhall Corsa. I was in the Sierra, and no, I wasn't "testing the brakes". I reckon the best thing to do is to wire up a spring-return switch (like one you'd use for electric washers) into the brakelight circuit. That way you can put the brakelights on without actually braking. Should work for 99% of tailgaters.

Hmm....I posted my experience to show that this 'supposed' incident is all too real and it was posted in the spirit of the original post....not 'c**k waving' as Bryn so eloquently put it.
I agree however, that maybe enough has been said on the subject and the thread would benefit from locking.

I was involved in an incident quite similar a few years back which taught me that lesson. Was driving down a residential road when all of a sudden in front sometone attempted a U turn. I didnt wait for them to turn fully and just drove past. This was enough to pee them off. I ended up being literally driven off the road onto the pavment before two of them got out. I wound my window down (god knows why, it wasn't as if they were going to tell me I had a brake light out!) and then was greeted by a hail of fists. Was caught a couple of times and then saw his mate coming over to join in. As they opened my drivers door I managed to get it into gear and drive off. Girlfriend in tears and mate in the back white as a ghost.
I know I should have waited for them to complete the turn but being young and feeling safe in my tin box I showed a little agression, but the reaction made me realise there are some proper grad 'A' nutcases out there.
Be safe kids!
PS In response to Bryn I think sharing experiences like this make SkoadaNormans initial posting all the more poignant and thought provoking.

Theres certainly seems to be a lack of loving in the world, and people seem to like exercising their anger in their cars and in around pubs, in my experience. Not good, it really doesn't take much to provoke. I try not to rise to situations but its hard not to sometimes. Being chased by a tow truck on my BMX was a hair raising experience, and sounding off at the neanderthal (sp?) passenger was not a well thought out plan! being put off by unprovoked gangster ragers at a junction nearly resulted in a crash a near miss with red light shooter that also nearly hit me, very lucky that day. Chill out no matter what is what i'm gonna continue to try do.

a near miss with red light shooter that also nearly hit me, very lucky that day. I had something very similar to that recently. It wasn't a case of the truck going through just as the other lights went red* - he just couldn't be bothered to stop *my light had been green for too long for it to be that

YO! Peace dudes. Spent most of the weekend glued to the computer typing, so my rather too frequent visits to Retro Rides were all that was keeping me sane. I've had far too many nasty experiences behind the wheel over the years and it was just starting to grip me the way the thread was going, I hold this place in high regard and those who populate it, so I like to think the retro-ride collective are above such actions, but we're all human. Me more than many sometimes Sorry about the 'cock waving' comment, it was uncalled for and hypocritical, after all I drive a BIG black BMW I've just had a great 200 mile drive this morning with no horrible incidents and enjoyed every minute. Peace out. One time, shoe shine etc.
