My first car was my dads old Mk1 16TRS in silver complete with matt silver spots where he'd rubbed down the peeling laquer and rattle caned it. ;D Why do dads do that? That was back in 93 and I still remember driving along the sea front twating about with the suspension whilst blaring snoop dog out the wibblepoo stereo.... more like ski lows pinto than a snoops impala ;D
Now the old man has a 2.0i XM manual, not the fastest bus on the planet but the engine is a piece of wee to work on and you get better reliability/ economy than the V6. Very comfortable drive with recharged spheres and you can set the dampers to sport to real in the body roll. Plus you get some of the most sofa like chairs this side of DFS. Never had any problems with the electrics since I stripped and cleaned the releys behind the headlights (weakspot) and he's had it about six years so far.

While we're on the subject of big Citroens, I appreciate this is slightly OT for the board but what do you think of the new C6? Worthy successor or sorry state?

hey, those wipers are awesome! Best headlamp wipers I have ever seen. Ooh no Mr.B... I have to point you to the gloriously silly propeller style headlight wipers fitted to the Swedish Datsun 100A FII... ;D If anyone with an F10 wants a set, I just happen to have some going spare As for BX's... I always hated their styling (if that's what you can call it) but somehow as they get older they seem to become more attractive. I suppose it's because their "designed with a ruler" looks now make then stick out like a sore thumb. I always thought the seats were kind of funky in then older ones. -Ed

While we're on the subject of big Citroens, I appreciate this is slightly OT for the board but what do you think of the new C6? Worthy successor or sorry state? I have to vote sorry state, although the angle & resolution of that pic flatter it, and make it look better than any other pic I've seen. I would like it, were it not for the rear foot or so, which completely ruins the rest of the design, and makes the whole car look ill-proportioned. The vertical elements around the tail lights not only visually shorten the rear overhang, making it appear unbalanced compared to the large front overhang, but the main horizontal cues are disrupted, making the tail look even more stunted. Not a patch on the XM* and Xantia - IMO the last good looking Citroens. *A superb late '80s interpretation of the classic DS - both the hatch and estate are great looking cars

Sorry, not much to offer on the subject of BXes. Had no life-changing experiences in them or anything. Still see them about every so often.

My 2 penny worth. Avoid the BX 4x4, the transfer box is a week point and can break easy costing a bomb. The price of 4x4 versions is often much lower! There was not a TD 4x4 for the UK.
The series one cars shares the same engine and drive train as the rest of the PSA products of the day so Citroen LNA, BX, Visa, C15 - Peugeot 104, 205 - Talbot Samba, with the 1360cc unit slung in transverse at 72 degrees and gears in the sump. Series one cars BX16 and BX19 use the Peugeot 205/305 arrangement of XU engine and BE1 gearbox bolted on in conventional arrangement. There is nothing wrong with the 1360 its very easy to change many bits like fuel pump, alternator, water pump in as little as 20 minutes but if its missed its services the timing chain will rattle and the transfer gears will rattle in neutral. Diesel power on series one was firstly in the form of the arrangement of a XUD 1905cc engine and BE1 gearbox which had previously come out in the Talbot Horizon, and economy version with lower french taxation rating came out later using the 205 set up of 1769cc.
Buy one!

the BX gti is even more rare nowadays. the 205 boys having ripped most of the Mi16's out of 405's have now cottoned on the the fact the the BXgti engine is the same but is ally and not iron so a damn site lighter.
if you can get one..buy it...if it rusts to pices you can always sell teh engine on for at least £350.
steer completely clear of the 405 4x4, the system is heavy and un reliable. the AX GT is a cool car but if you can find a BX gti get one....fast.

Great to see this thread padding out more and more! Hey reanimation, you're going to 'keep an eye out' for every car ever made at this rate! Get that V8 Sierra going! (says he with bids outstanding on yet more unroadworthy sh1te) You noticed huh, Yeah i don't want to start a museum though! If i buy a citroen it will be a tool, and clarksons TG test of the new big one made me realise it really needs to be done. Of course they look interesting too even the new ones! A scooby doo brat would be great too, plus a mighty Carlton estate. but i'm seeing less horror stories and more inspiration for the citroen. all i'm doing is eliminating things i need to buy, not easy when we're all-car lovers is it?! Cant afford rollok all at the mo though. More citroen info if theres any left to squeeze out!

My brother had a £100 shed of a BX, 16 valve GTI. His Corrado was in the garage being fixed at the time and he couldn't be arsed to get the bus for a few weeks so he bought a BX instead. I didn't get to to drive it but I did play with the ride height adjuster on the drive He said it was fast (his Corrado is a VR6 BTW) in a isn't running very well sheddy kind of a way, looking proper shabby in black but also pretty mean. I would have one anyday of the week ;D

Hmm, a few misguided people here!
I have a 405 Mi16x4, (as TCSperformance said, although am not BazGTMi on here as he said) -1905cc Alloy engine block, 160 bhp in standard form, and re-knowned for its amazing handling, just a little slower acceleration due to the extra running gear! In fact all the Mi-engined cars, BX's and 405's do indeed go and handle very well, the BX's being slightly lighter due to plastic front wings, bonnets etc. Dave Walker (Emerald) has a BX16v race car on throttle bodies etc (not GTi as said) making very good power.
The 4x4 system is ever so slightly different across the different models, the BX GTi(8v) and 405 GLx4 being the same, then different for the 16v, and again different for the very rare 405T16(2.0 16v Turbo 4x4) They also, yes can be a pain if not maintained well, the transfer box splines are the weak point, will go at around 80-100k, as with anything.
The later iron block 2.0 16v 155bhp Catalyst engines are not found in the BX at all, but in the later ('92>) 405 Mi16s, 306 S16, and ZX16v, of which i had the latter until not so long ago, and handle extremely well being of the same underpinnings of a 306 GTi6. Both the 405s and BX's are very good cars if well looked after, as with any aging car, and are very often overlooked. They definately get my vote.

I've got a 2.0 iron-block Mi16.
As the man said, awesome car. The 2.0 is badly maligned, IMO, as being "heavy" and "slow" usually by the same people who like 306s. Go figure.
My wife drives it around every day. In Australia, these are fairly cheap and unlike the reputation they seem to have for you guys in the UK, regarded as a upper-middle class sort of thing. They're also pretty unusual with only a few people who know enough about them to trust their servicing etc.
My MI16's been well looked after before I bought it, though being time and money poor it's nowhere near in as good condition as it once was in the body and paint. And a toddler isn't kind to the interior.
I'll repeat myself and say it's an awesome car. It's just the right size, it's fuel efficient, it's easy to drive and easy to drive fast. Why Peugeot stopped with the interesting bigger cars after the Mi16 I don't know.

Australia and NZ seem so far away, I find it proper interesting to think about all these cars that are designed and screwed together in UK, France, Germany, than shipped right the way round the world to Oz, to be used. The thought of Citroen ZX’s in Australia seems mega strange to me for some reason.

ever notice the similarity between an 80's audi coupe and the BX? its the C-pillar that does it.
somebody who deosn't know about cars will ALWAYS mistake my car for a f*cking BX.... and it p*sses me off.

Sorry but anyone who can mistake an audi coupe for a BX or a triumph acclaim for a BMW, is clearly a total mong and not worth losing any sleep over. They look nothing like, both are ridiculous.
