Well, my brother has just bought a '59 W111 mercedes 220, the one with the fins. Seeing as he rightly likes the model, yet is not impressed by the technical specs (swingaxles, drum brakes all round, 3 speed clumn change), how are these things to tune? As in better suspension, bigger engines, LSD, better brakes etc. Will parts from W108 or later model S-classes fit? To give you an idea of where it's supposed to be heading, he turned down an E12 with a 745 turbo engine for it, so something nearly as fast as that is supposed to be the result. What's the PCD by the way? Of course some pics for your trouble. And although it's not a W111 it's still cool:

In my DAF I had twin gauges, for monitoring the vacuum that operates the variomatic, but normally people use them for economic motoring. Can't imagine it helps a lot though.

Does anyone know the PCD of 3-lug Talbot Samba/Citroen LN(A)/Peugeot 104 wheels. I might be buying a set for the DAf and want to see if they're remotely compatable.

Apparently they were a bit of a letdown. Only 210 or something bhp and a very heavy powerunit meant that a Thema Integrale was quicker. Still, can't beat a Ferrari V8, can you?

The newer engine own't bolt straight in. The bolt pattern on the flywheel changed circa 1973, and there may be some problem with the motor mount (ie. different thread or nonexistant). Yes it's very easy to dislodge the liners, just whack in some new seal and never attempt to turn the crank with the head off. Oh, and three of you can easily lift the engine with everything on it. (If you're strong you can do it alone). Awesome car btw!

The Turbotwin X1 (picture from the Goodwood FOS) was awesome. Each engine had a ginormous single turbo feeding two smaller turbo's. The thing had 4700 Nm of torque. The one that crashed was the X2 actually, with only 900 bhp. Here is the link to a vid of it overtaking Ari Vatanen's 405 GR.

Just stick the whole 1400 in. At least in the the DAF's it feels much faster than you'd expect for the 100cc and 20 bhp gain. Up the compression, get a custom cam from Autosprint and enjoy your 85-ish bhp.

As an avid (ex)modeller I can tell you:
Brake fluid melts some plastics, so if you're gonna use it try it on an out of sight bit first. The safest thing to melt paint off plastic is actually ovencleaner (mr. Muscle or that sort of thing). Takes about a day for thick paint to wear off though. And it also had an effect on the outer layer of the plastic: it makes it a bit less flexible.

You could look into some of the goodies Melkus made: expansion exhausts, triple Jikov's, that sort of thing. Also people with DDR speedboats (panthers) frequently use these parts. They may be old and scene taxed, yet very retro-awesome. Basically anything you want to do has been done to death by East-German people with files and tincans 30 years ago, so german forums might be your best bet. Alternatively, injection sounds like a great idea. Just mod a basic K-jet system and you'll instantly cut fuel consumption in half.

Nice find! Awesome cars. If you don't feel like using the C-series block, you can also use a K-series out of a megane. Same bolt pattern, injection, 1600 16V for a K7m, 110 bhp. Might not be as powerful as a GT Turbo engine, but saves you throwing endless amounts of money at something with pushrods which will blow up eventually. I live a mile from the European distribution centre, so got some too. Pretty cheap, yet they sent me out first with 3 instead of 4 hoses (they insisted my car only has 3), and one of their hoses was crimped wrongly causing it to leak. Not entirely happy, but pretty nice guys anyway.

The Tatra 601 was powered by an aircooled 8. As was the famous Porsche 908 Which in an evolved version was tearing up the CanAm circuit. In a bid to revive CanAm racing Dodge made its own Shelby-backed racer in 1989. With Dodge also being the company that fathered the compact Dart. Which was the reason why this car was officially always called the SP250

Well, the red one's gone, to make room for a white one! It's the coupe model, with a lot less rust than the red one. It also has the luxuries of a cigarette lighter, reversings lights and poseable rear sidewindows. Plus it's been converted to run on LPG , 'cos I'm cheap. Will be a project to make it roadworthy, but I'm confident. Because real cars don't have doorframes. Or gears. ;D
