My Renault Caravelle has a problem with excessive water consumption. On a 500 mile trip to France in the autumn it used a couple of litres. The head gasket has been checked and is fine. My question is: I have found an 1108 CC engine which is around 15 years old. It was used by Ransomes to power a lawnmower and has done around 100 hours. It has sat in a workshop for most of its life and I have been given the chance to buy it for £350. Would this engine fit straight into my Caravelle and would three of us be able to lift it into the boot of my Zafira. Thank you. This is the car with the problem if you don't know what it is

firstly- WOW! thats stunning! second- this is presumably the old renault dauphine design like a five etc.? if so its alloy blocked wet liner, it may be the base of the liner leaking, I've seen five's do that. and if its that engine then it will be rather light. not up on zafira boots but its not a very big engine and would fit in most hatchback boots. I'm no renault expert though so don't just take my word for any of this.

If it is the liners, will the water be mixing with the oil because at the moment it isn't.

Nice car. I thought that the Caravelle engine and box were more or less the same as the Renault 8. I know the Renault 8 Gordini guys use Renault 5 engines in their race cars. Is the lawnmower engine derived from the Renault engine, if so, would it be tuned differently for cutting grass (cams, carb etc)?
The early R5 5 speed gearboxes can also be converted to an end shift (rather than the linkage on the side) using the Caravelle end casting.

yes it would mix with the oil, so its not the liners then. I did say I wasn't a renault expert

A mate had a wet liner Renner engine (a Renault 10) and that gave all the symptoms of a head gasket failure but the gaskets came out mint. That was misalligned liners doing that. Very easy to do.
Also check for head warping as the early engines are "apparently" prone to it.
Love the Caravelle. Whats the difference between a Flouride and a Caravelle? Both look the same car to me? Not that I have ever seen many real ones to compare.

The newer engine own't bolt straight in. The bolt pattern on the flywheel changed circa 1973, and there may be some problem with the motor mount (ie. different thread or nonexistant). Yes it's very easy to dislodge the liners, just whack in some new seal and never attempt to turn the crank with the head off. Oh, and three of you can easily lift the engine with everything on it. (If you're strong you can do it alone). Awesome car btw!
