Been wondering about these for a while now - obviously things like oil pressure gauges are very useful but is a vacuum gauge actually of any use for normal driving, or is it best kept as purely a diagnostic tool when tuning carbs etc? Thanks!

yes, bloody blinding for saving petrol, on them trips your just driving normally, keeping the needle in the green becomes a bit of an obsesion and its supriesing just how hard it is to drive economically.

Gives an idea of fuel consumption by monitoring manifold vaccum - more throtle= less vaccum= less mpg. Never seen a real point in them though, mostly fitted by people who WANT to be able to fit a boost gauge

helps reduce fuel consumption if you drive by it, but ultimately useless.
My wipers are my vacuum gauge ;D

I had one in my 24v cortina and i could get over 40mpg on the motorway by keeping it in the green bit, in 5th given a slightly lighter throttle than i'd normally have used i could keep the needle in the "idle" part of the gauge, 40mpg+ from a brick shaped car with a 200bhp 2.9 litre engine is pretty good and i coculdnt do it before i had the gauge in there.

In my DAF I had twin gauges, for monitoring the vacuum that operates the variomatic, but normally people use them for economic motoring. Can't imagine it helps a lot though.

You can use them for a basic carb tune. If you have two or three or four, you can balance a multicarb set up. If you need them for multicarb setup, then a Morgan Carbtune II, with the sliding rods is excellent, but doesn't look too glamourous hanging from your dashboard. They are mainly used for bikes.
And yes, they make a great "fuel economy" gauge.
