On my daily a 2002 volvo v70 D5.
So looking at jobs i can do while been confined to the house for atleast the next month. Air con has never worked for me, and i don't think for the previous owner - so say at least 3-4 years. Ive stuck a pressure gauge on it from when a bloke at work diy refilled his and it read zero pressure.
I'm not really willing to spend alot on fixing it (due to it not working for so long) - so is there any diy tests i can do to find a potential leak with home tools - bike pump etc.
Or should i just pay up for a test or live without it.

I had my twin rear wheel 4.6t sprinter downrated to 3.5t last year - it was apparently just a paperwork exercise you could do yourself easily.....no DVLA wouldnt play ball - told me i need svtech to do it.
I had to get proper documents done but by another person cost me i think £160 but was all done legit etc. Hes an old bloke and hardish to contact but sorted it out no bother. I can find details if needed...if hes still doing it.

bought a secondhand sealey mig off a mate about 10 years ago for £70 and taught myself - still using the same welder today. Not a great machine but ive learnt how to use it and its fine, would be alot easier with a 'proper' machine but you don't need it.

This would the last daily i bought, 2 days ago just as a stop gap/for a laugh a 2003 rover 75 cdti for £150 - bargain i thought.
Owned by a guy at our work who had it for 9 years - first time for 37 years not owning a rover - best car hes ever owned, seen him using it everyday for 4 years without any real issues hes a nice guy knows enough about cars etc.
Gave me the keys Tuesdays morning i go out to it at dinner time, front drivers side tyre flat as a pancake, swapped it over no problem.
Wednesday night sudden crack and loud rubbing noise while driving down a country road. front spring snapped, unseated and straight into the tyre.
left in layby over night
Today - AM, In laws go to AA it this morning - window smashed, nothing inside to steal.
Today - PM, gone for scrap.
Guy was gutted forced the money back to me, which id already got back from a breaker, so we agreed to stick in the works charity tub.
Shortest time ive owned a car.

You are in a good position if they have admitted fault and have a few witnesses.
There insurance company will more than likely want to deal with you direct, as it will usually keep there costs down, you would hope this would make it simpler for them to give you a decent payout and to fix yourself.
Be straight with them and tell them what you want from word the start, if they mess you about tell them you will now be going through your insurance company and you now need a hire car from them. Just the fees they will get charged for a hire car could easily add up to more than your cars value.
good luck

Just as an update, well i fitted the new core, got back up and running, but had no power a rattle noise and lots and lots of black smoke below 2000rpm, then the van flew and drove fine. Thought a vane had come out of place so took it off, all seemed fine so fitted and exactly same.
Guessing the vnt stop screw needed a different distance from the old chra and it was choking the turbo (plenty of soot in the vane side - when there was hardly any when taking the old one off).
Cant be arsed with messing about anymore as its a pain in the bum to adjust on the van and i don't want to risk damage, so just buying a full recon from London turbos which i should have done in the first place.

blip throttle on mine, small puff of greyish smoke, and then clean as a whistle, mate told me it smokes well?was so worried i put a 90 bend on the end of the pipe so i can see it in the mirror when driving, after I did this he admitted he was winding me up curse word lol mine is also a motor home, your consumption seems heavy though? can drive clear through france from dieppe to san sebastion spanish border without refueling,as france is horrendous on diesel prices now, have done it 4 or 5 times now, only time it didnt make it was when the boost transducer was playing up,and had to put 20 euro in just beyond Bordeaux to get me over the border mines twin wheeler, pretty happy with consumption my mates t5's didn't do much better on the same trip. I will check the boost transducer tho. Thanks for the replies guys, Any good sources for a CHRA, seen ones on eBay but I don't mind paying extra for piece of mind. Get it from London turbos. They have an ebay shop. They only have the full turbos, still reasonable at £198 non exchange, found a uk made CHRA for £65. Turbo is off and will open it up tomorrow afternoon

cheers for the reply guys, been doing the maths and its done 3k in my ownership and atleast 13k from previous owner - with it more than likely like this. Altought the previous owner did have the intercooler replace a few years ago after it blew a hole in it going over the Pyrenees, however they did have this replaced at a Mercedes dealership In spain so yid have expected them to atleast check the turbo. Whats the shaft float like, i.e. can you waggle the thing round touching the turbine blades against the sides of the bore. Do you have oil content in the intake pipe? That is pretty FUBAR looking i'd change it before the whole thing lets go of its seal and runs away or the bits get ingested by the engine. Have you done an oil change recently to see what sort of swarf you have flying about. Only minimal normal play, not enough to hit the bore. No excessive oil in the intake either. No swarf in the oil. If it were a bolt gone through that you’d have no turbine left. Probably something as daft as a leaf or a tiny stone. I’ve seen the maths involved in the velocity of a few-gram piece of foam hitting a compressor wheel and the force numbers out the other side were ridiculous. Truth be told I’d want to replace that, it won’t be helping the performance. You can get just the core unit without housing for as little as £100 and they are easy to fit, I often fit CHRA’s (tech name) over a cheap turbo as buying a cheap complete turbo with housings means they have cheaped out somewhere to manufacture the housings. A moderately priced CHRA is a better run for the money. I’ve not had one fail or miss-perform yet. I was guessing it may have been something more wit all the markings on the bore aswell. Yeah ive been looking at getting a CHRA or just a full secondhand turbo. To be honest ive ben quiet happy with the performance pulls along nicely and did 28mpg of my 1000mile trip around st week. own an 02 sprinter meself, with regards to the blades, on balance would replace the turbo, they are obviously damaged and weakened, with who knows what stress cracks hidden from view, you would curse if it let go on the motorway and scattered bits of the turbo throughout the intercooler etc? best bet is to replace it i think, on the black smoke subject, is it just a short burst then clean? does it smoke if left to tickover for a while? mileage? mine does it very slightly and always has done, its covered 155k now Ive owned it for nearly 6 years, and did once have a problem where it would smoke like crazy if left ticking over when hot, I initially blamed it on filling up with cheap french gazoil on a return trip to uk,but it wasnt! turned out to be a completely goosed boost transducer, which lives behind the drivers side headlight, and takes minutes to change, strange thing was , I hadnt been happy with the feel of the braks for about a month before this, and no amount of stripping cleaning and checking, made any difference, they worked ok but didnt inspire confidence? anyway the old boost transducer when checked allowed the vacuum straight through it! hence the curse word feel to the brakes, with new transducer fitted brakes were brilliant again! puffs black smoke if you blip the throttle, stops as soon as it boosts, dd get a bit of smoke when pushing it, wouldnt say excessive though. Doesnt smoke if left ticking over. ill have a look at the boost transducer, cheers.

On my 2001 mercedes Sprinter - ex riot van motorhome. om611 Ok so i only found this a day after fitting a boost gauge(just because i found one in my garage) - and checking for something else - the turbo still boosts up fine. While searching for my black smoke when setting off (before turbo kicks in) i took the intake pipe off to check for slits and was granted with this. Now ive just come back from a 1000mile trip around Scotland and had no issues and i know the previous owner has done many thousands of miles and had no idea of this - so i have no idea when and how long ago it happened. My question is would you be worried about this, should i get it changed asap? or just monitor it. As you can see it looks like its had a bolt banging around in there at some stage in its life. Any advice appreciated.

In the past ive just used a tape measure to get it in the ballpark, and it works surprisingly well.
Measure from a set point on the tyres (ie a centre groove) between the front tyres across the car.
Do this on both sides of the wheels
Then adjust until the measurements are equal/slightly toe-in.
That will get your wheels relatively parallel when driving.

I don't fully believe all this thieves marking properties and stuff, just sounds like a scaremongering tactic. I mean why would any thief go to the effort to screw something into your garage door or put a mark on it and then have to find it later in the dark when they could just take a picture or make a note of the address.

sounds like one of two things, air leak somewhere on the fuel system or glowplugs not working, more likely to be your glowplugs seen as the light isnt staying on for abit when cold.

The cheap Chinese slimline ones are garbage, just like the cheap Chinese steering wheels that you can bend in half with minimal effort.
Nothing wrong with a quality quick release boss like NRG.
