Hello all,
Needing a bit of advice! Just got home and the girlfriend noticed a random bit of blue painted string ball on the garage. Someone's put a small screw into the front of the door and tied the blue ball to it. Quite small but noticeable enough from the road.
To me it looks like someone's marked my garage as a target. It's a small cul de sac and any breaks in would be tough but not impossible. I use the garage most days its its never been there before.
Does this sound like a burglar marker to show a classic car is inside? And if so what can I do to protect myself further? Not too happy about this really as it stinks of dodgy activity!
Cheers.

Take photos and report it to the local plod (I'm from Chester too), they might come and have a look. Look into some CCTV for the area for future protection.

Does sound suspicious,
Keep an eye out for anything else appearing.
I don’t even open my garage so people can never look inside

It does sound abit odd, report it to the police, there might be other reported instances they can compare it too.

I've just bought a PIR for my council lockup. There is no power, and I'm not local, so I went for this one, as it has a decent battery life (claimed) and will text me via a GiffGaff SIM EBAY linkHope it helps

Report it to your local force, it is a tried method of “Marking” targets from properties, vehicles & even horses/livestock!
Get hold of Cheshire Constabulary either on 101 or see if they have an online reporting option. Some forces have this, not sure if Cheshire do so you could send a general request via their web site. Give full details & emphasise you have a classic car (Or whatever you have in the garage)
Either way this should be passed as intel and/or to the local neighbourhood team as they may have had similar reports previously.

Do you have a photo of it? Sounds odd.
A few years ago I had someone try to break into my garage. They assumed the external door handle was functional and drilled the lock out which failed to gain them entry. I took it as a sign they’d return so removed as much as I could from the garage, what I couldn’t remove I chained to solid structures and put 3” ratchet straps around things and made it as awkward for them as possible.
Sure enough they returned and somehow ripped the whole side door out, they left with nothing thankfully and I put this down to potentially making it as awkward as possible for them. Believe it or not they did return a few times after that, further more I caught the chaps in the act on their last attempt. Turned out to be a friends younger brother. Can’t trust anyone it seems.
Get a camera if you can and possibly an alarm? I recently fitted a Yale system. 2 door sensors and 2 PIR sensors. Doesn’t need to have a permanent power supply (apart from the control panel which iirc can be up to 300 yards away in the house). You can add additional sensors in as well. I have the house and the garage covered.
I hate theifs with a passion.

Take a cue from the Arabian Nights, and put a matching blue ball & string on all the nearby garages as well.

Thanks for the replies, really helpful.
I've let local police know. Garage now has 3 heavy duty padlocks on, 1 with an alarm. And door has been reinforced. Disklok fitted, steering wheel been put on full lock (so it steers into the wall), taken a wheel off and moved it into the house along with all tools. Disabled engine. Security light being fitted tomorrow afternoon. And will look at some form of camera - the ones linked above look suitable!
Hopefully enough to make it so annoyingly difficult to nick that they won't bother!
Anybody have any decent GPS suggestions too? For when out and about.
Cheers again!

A standard GPS locator will suffice, one that you can track via your phone.

I don't fully believe all this thieves marking properties and stuff, just sounds like a scaremongering tactic. I mean why would any thief go to the effort to screw something into your garage door or put a mark on it and then have to find it later in the dark when they could just take a picture or make a note of the address.

I sometimes wonder if they mark them for someone else to come back later, i.e. kids sent to hang around and mark stuff then the adults come back later (after they've finished laying driveways/flytippin/breaking into playing fields perhaps? )

12 guage alarm, Trip wire that fires a 12guage blank. Gamekeepers alarms basically. Bloody loud A friend of mine used that system on his back door after scrotes poisoned his dog, broke in to his farmhouse, nicked his keys and had his Subaru away. One night he came home hammered, he's still deaf in one ear........
