Tdci out of a 2001< mondeo should be pretty cheap to get hold of the full car. Will need a bell housing but I think its the same pattern as the duratec (correct me if i'm wrong) and you can buy one off the shelf. Currently only one for sale in my area, but far too expensive, but an option should I find a wrecked vehicle.

Theoretical question for now... In South Africa the Ford P100/Ford Cortina LDV/Bakkie (Sierra based P00 never manufactured in SA) was most popular in 1600cc Kent and of course the V6 Essex engine versions. Very few diesel engined vehicles were built and sold. In its day it was the best selling one tonner in the country. I can probably source a P100 (I simply like them!) in decent shape, but the engines are usually very high milers and thus in poor condition and were in the first place not economical units. If this materialize, I would like to use it as a daily runner. With the current rediculeous fuel prices economy is a priority and that might mean fitting a diesel engine. Reaching for compromises in sourcing a power plant the following questions arise and remarks apply:
1. Fairly old engine in order to be affordable. Ease and cost of maintenance usually fairly simple and affordable. Consumption/economy usually less efficient.
2. Make of engine. Toyota I believe is not really economical and in SA very sought after and thus expensive. What other options - Peugeot, Mazda, others? Once again the factors above under 1. come into play.
3. Engine-gearbox combination from same donor vehicle with eye on simplicity, economy of conversion and prevention of adapter plates issues? Thus restricted to an originally longitudinal engine and not transverse engine donor vehicle?
4. Reliability. Determined by manufacturer and application?
Any thoughts?
Thank you!

The most irritating and (arguably) thus the most effective is the buzzer connected to the Mercedes lights switch. Models W126, W124 amongst others.

Hi Grizz!
I'm always on tenterhooks to see where your projects go and even more so with this one! I can still remember how, as young school kida, we ended up in fist fights as to the merits of Ford versus Chev!
You need a modification to: "Currently RETRO-LESS....... Watch this space."...!!

August 2010? Can't be! Feel like yesterday! I have always admired your energy and enthusiasm whether to do with your numerous hobbies and (sometimes swiftly acquired) skills or life's little and sometimes major hick ups. What engine is your preference in the Chev? And why Chev? Is petrol comparably as expensive as on our side? What distances will you cover and how often? All the best with you and Nicola's new venture of exchanging the two vehicles for the bakkie (pickup)!

Having followed the Anglia, my father owned a '58, with all your other vehicles and ventures, even I feel sorry to see her go, but hope her new home will be good to her and hat the young man appreciates her original condition!

Different, with a fair supporter base and with some of the models quite attractive to me, I started wondering... Eventually maintenance on these vehicles - especially the older pre GM products - will probably become uneconomical. Obviously maintaining the bodies will also be problematic, but probably less so than the mechanicals. Would these vehicles lend themselves to relatively easy transplants of other complete front wheel drive set ups - sub frame etc, eg Volkswagen or Honda into them? Would it be worth the effort?

In South Africa (I do not know about other markets), under BMW ownership, the BMW 2.8 petrol engine was used as one of the petrol power sources and has now become, I am told, quite sought after in the second hand market.

Seems like you are no longer seriously considering the A Class. If you still are, your home work is not done. The car's "sandwich" chassis design based on a double floor makes it extremely difficult and expensive to work on for numerous reasons. Diagnostics by your friendly MB dealer's exclusive laptop. I've driven them and find them bland.
