Got these slots for our Bedford off Gray last week. removing the tyres revealed a label saying they are 32 years old, not been used much but the fronts had got a good layer of corrosion on them. gave them a quick clean up with soapy water and then a good scrub with some scotchbrite they started to look much better. Also used some "Astonish" kind of clay based very fine polishing paste, that fetched them up well but still leaves the tell tale pitting from the corrosion, then I went over them with some Autoglym metal polish, I cant find anywhere that sells Autosol but I have found the polish gets into the pitting and leaves it looking blackened and more obvious...... I mean they look ok but not perfect. I rang a firm in Birmingham and they quoted me £220 for shotblasting and powdercoating but I don't want them powdercoated and its a lot of money and I prefer the bare aluminium look. My mate says I could get them "Vapour cleaned" but cant find anywhere that offers that. What shall I do? Leave them as they are because they look ok or get them up like new.

Yeah, we sell it at halfords, but it won't get far with those wheels. its about the same sort of stuff as the Autoglym stuff really.

Like cobblers says above, you got to attack them with some wet and dry, you'll soon get them to a polished finish. You might even be better starting with 1200 or even 800 grit if the surface isn't too good.

Yeah, polishing corroded slots to the point were they shine like a cats ass in the moonlight just isn't a quick or fun job, but so worth it at the end. As has been said, polish out the pitting with some very fine wet and dry, a lot of determination and a bucket load of elbow grease, but ALWAYS go with the grain of the wheel. After that, invest in a drill polish mop and give them a damn good polishing with some solvol autisol. Hallfrauds do sell it, but they are over priced. You can get it on ebay for about £3 a tube which will probably do all four wheels.

hmmm,
Having already spent about 10 hours on them I am sick of scrubbing, rubbing and polishing for now.
I got some wet and dry only its wibblepoo, when I get it wet all the abrasive stuff comes off in no time.
what rpm for the mop?
Maybe if I break both legs or something in the future I will get them up to a mirror shine.

Theres a good guide here.. www.englishcustompolishing.com/usca/aluminum1.htmlI had a two minute burst with a polishing mop on one of the rears and it seemed to be coming up nicely, the fronts were always a bit worse though, with enough time they should look chromelike I knew they were old but 1977? I don't think theres even a scratch or kerb mark on them ;D

8inch wide 15" rims . wolfrace slot mags , uni lug fitting . brought from mumbersons american breakers for a tenner each. brought a polishing ebay , used a orbital sander with 120 grit pads to remove the oxidization from the rims , then followed the instructions in the polishing kit to achieve the results above. I'm pleased with them. £20 for the two rims and 60 quid for the polishing kit. quite a result.[/quote] if you get fed up of them mike , i take them off your hands if you want to be charitable. lol

looking at that picture of the rim it looks to me like corrosion through a laquer (those lines look like turning lines and look ok where the laquer is missing) maybe nitromors them and clean ll the laquer off first? couse I could be totally off the mark here and they aint laquered...
FTR those rims at the bottom that were done with an ebay polishing kit look awsome... good job !!

When I asked about this ages ago nobody helped *whine*
However. Ordered a polishing kit and will pick up some wet n dry tomorrow. I'm off sick atm, so I'll give you a progress update tomorrow evening with any luck (assuming it doesn't rain ALL day and I can find my old wheel bolts to stick a couple of my old steels on while I'm at it.

depending where you are, my dad runs an aluminium finish company
I am sure he could polish them up for less than what you were quoted.
He is holiday atm, but if you are interested i could ask him to quote at the weekend when he gets back.
Based just of J3 of the M40.

I have decided to leave the wheels as they are call it a patina and be done with it, its looking like adding up to nearly a grand all in as it is for this set of wheels and tyres and thats enough.

How'd you come to that figure? Place round my way will skim & polish them for £30 a pop. I'm just too cheap to pay it.

Hallfrauds do sell it, but they are w@nkers and it's over priced. You can get it on ebay for about £3 a tube which will probably do all four wheels. That's uncalled for and very, very offensive. Especially when the post before yours was made by someone who works there and given the amount of other employees on this site.

I called this place today anf they said grit blasting and powdercoating was £50 for each 14" and £65 for each 15" so thats £220 I don't want them powdercoated and its too much anyway. I bought the wheels for £300 Tyres are going to be about £600 A set of wheel nuts are £55 so thats £955!! way more than I originally thought I would spend but its soo worth it. if I hadn't just sold my car there is no way I could afford to blat that kind of money on wheels and tyres. Just polished them again, I just need some wax to keep the shine a bit, you can see the order I did them in as the shine soon fades in minutes....
