I'm sure there was a thread for posting videos, but as an infrequent visitor I'm not sure where that is these days... (Mods please feel free to amend / move as necessary) Anyway, purpose of the post is for this lovely vid of my brother-in-law's Vectra GSi, a rare sight these days. It makes a lovely noise. (And I'm not a big fan of the rimZ, but he likes them so whAteVaR )

I found myself looking at a '51 Vectra CD the other day that was going for very little money. I wasn't a huge fan at the time as they were fairly bland but now, compared to a sea of ugly, bloated modern stuff, they have nice clean lines and look pretty compact.
Being the CD, the one I saw had remote locking, all round electric windows and A/C, essentially all I really want (or care about) in a daily driver. I'm still tempted, to be honest.

Have had loads of these, have 2 now, 1 of which is currently for sale, the other being a very early V6 SRi saloon. Love them tbh, they do their job well, parts are still relatively easy to get, prices seem to be on the up though, there's not many left.

Retro I will say. Maybe on the edge but certainly within that.
The Vectra after this was quite different and the Insignia felt like another car altogether.
Funny really, as this was quite a departure from the Cavalier. I have memories of the Vectra as a company car for my dad, in addition to him almost getting a GSi version once.

The majority of the production run of the Vectra B would get in to an RR Event no question, so on that basis I'd say yes. Even more so when you consider how ubiquitous they once were and now how rare. They are also one of those cars with a bewildering array of engine options (at least as far as Wikipedia is concerned)

It's definitely a BTCC influence, but I really like that era of Vectra/Mondeo/Laguna. They're very individually styled for a run of the mill saloon and (imo) all decent looking cars.

The Vectra B is a great looking car! Not sure about the wheels on that one, but it's firmly getting into Retro territory now.

I've had a fair few GSi Vectras, they're definitely in the retro window now imho. I quite like the rims on that one but the headlights are dipping.

Definitely. I know nothing about them as road cars, but touring cars. Yes.

It seemed back then, the BTCC influence was strong for sure! Maybe it’s because I was young but the BTCC seemed to really capture its audience well relatively speaking

It's because they looked like the cars you can buy in the showroom. I'm sure a chart to plot the reducing popularity of a type of Motorsport Vs how close the cars look to what people can actually buy would almost trend at a downwards 45 degree slope.

Maybe it's nostalgia as I grew up with it but the 90s btcc seemed to have an almost perfect mix of sights and sounds. The liveries were cooler, the sound of itb's and straight cut gears with Murray Walker's commentary.
IMO I think it was better because the cars were proper saloons/large hatches, rather than the smaller hatches you get now (although a couple of bigger cars have snuck in in more recent years like the MG6 and the BMW 3 series)
Being on a main TV channel rather than being hidden away on itv4 or wherever it's show these days probably also helped!
I've always quite liked the look of those Vectra gsi with the bodykit, I'm not a huge Vauxhall fan but my dad had a Vectra C Sri estate, which while not the sportiest thing, had a bit of a cool factor about it to my young mind 😅

I remember with my dad, he was a Ford man through and through, and still is to some extent.
He grew up with Fords before I was around. Tired ones I admit, but that was the way back then. Escort vans from the Mk1 to the Mk3 XR3i
As he entered the corporate ladder, he had the Maestros and Montegos in the late 80s. In 1991, he was given a car allowance by his then new employer. He went out and bought a Sierra Sapphire 2.0i GLS, complete with a 3 strut black lipped spoiler, and the two tone bodywork, on the later 5 spoke wheels. Maybe it was a crossover car thinking about it. For us, that was a brilliant car, and stayed in the extended family for a very long time. Anyway I digress.
As that got sold, he then got one of the first Mondeos, albeit a used one. This was a State Blue Mk1 with the full RS kit, down to the ultra rare colour coded thick door strips, and the RS spoiler, in addition to the bumpers etc.
At around the time it got written off, the company decided they wanted to give out company cars, and you guessed it, Vauxhall came right on top ; I suspect the damage done by Clarkson, and the Ford loyalty meant Vauxhall probably discounted them very hard. Thus, my dad begrudgingly had one.
He had a 2.0 SRi, on N744 HWY. TBH, from the Mondeo, it seemed more modern! That counts for the Mk2 as well! It had
-AC, the first car we ever owned to have it -TrafficMaster retrofitted by the dealership ; who remembers those? -A cooled glovebox ; almost no car I've owned since has come with one. BMWs? Nope? Fords? I don't think so.
He had problems of poor handling, which apparently was down to the picky tyre selection that the cars needed at the time. It used to wear out Dunlops funny, despite the alignment being fine. On a set of Michelin Pilot SXs it was like the car it should have been. We came to like that 'intruder' more with time.
Truth be told, it was a little sad to see it handed back.
He'd have other cars in between as company cars as he moved roles/jobs, including
-BMW E36 325tds (N307 NRW) ; the most troublesome car out of the lot, albeit what would now be easy fixes. That was a dealer maintained car too. -Ford Orion 1.8 Ghia (K865 EHJ) -Volvo S40 1.8i SE and 2.0i SE ; I learned to drive in the 1.8i. -Saab 9-3 Aero
We would get a hire car of a Vectra B 2.2 SRi in that time. Again, we all quite liked that car.
In short, the flirtation with the Vauxhall brand actually was not as bad as we thought, and if anything, offered us a little more.

A friend of my older brothers has had a good few GSI in his time, both hatches and saloons before stopping on an MSD tuned phase one which he poured a lot of time into to making very tidy indeed, he did the same with his Corsa GSI before that which was supercharged. He struggled with rust on each of the different chassis. He had a supertouring special edition for a brief while too which was a V6. My uncle also had a black saloon V6 gsi, Which in his opinion was the only one worth having because that's the chassis (saloon not hatch) used in btcc, he's in an ST220 now though he always was a ford man. Quite thirsty from memory, he also went through tyres and the car was starting to show its age, this must have been 2011-2013, I'd like one and have had a good few in my eBay saved for a long while, I used to live the irmsher estates with square exhausts, I don't recall many other cars having those at the time and I'd be really surprised if many cars still retain them given theyd probably all have been replaced now. I don't have anything more factual or of insight to add other than YES go for it!

Retro I think in a world of SUVs the performance saloon, especially in BTCC kit form from non "premium german" is a now a retro era. Do like that Vectra GSI but never owned one.

Love them tbh, they do their job well, parts are still relatively easy to get, prices seem to be on the up though, there's not many left. If you don't mind me asking what numbers your supertouring? I had 082 for a time.

I went to the warehouse where they converted standard GSIs into MSD ones , they had a giant skip full of standard recaro seats they took out slashed with a Stanley knife !

That first gen / prefacelift one shows the styling off really well. The later ones, where the black trim was changed to body colour never looked as cohesive. Even the BTCC ones highlighted the graphic of how that section of the bumper flowed from the shape of the front & rear lights. A classic example of how often facelifts are for the sake of it / marketing etc, rather than actually improving the design. The Omega was the same - early ones looked so much sleeker and more resolved than the later ones.
