I only found out about this event at the weekend and figured I'd share for those equally unaware. The starting point is here: www.sickthemagazine.com/sick-weekThe event is a like the Power Tour, a drag and drive event. This one is taking place in Florida, with 350 competitors taking to the strip then driving to the next destination. It seems to be set up well to take advantage of modern media channels so there is plenty of coverage available on Youtube: 1320 for example: Or Tom Bailey's own channel Sadly no cars from the UK competing, but I know that Wacky Mick Wilkes is there as is Paul from Coltech Classics. Now I need to go find some photos to spice up this thread...

Been following the build up and racing, looks like a good do so far. Really like the max 1 second RT rule so everything looks like a race, makes it a lot more interesting than the usual power tours.

I don't watch a lot of quartermile racing, so i don't understand all what is going on, but snce i started following some American youtube channels, i started to get a little more interest in it.
Watching the live stream from Gainesville right now, some seriously cool cars running!

As far as i gathered it, normally on these events you can go whenever you want, so you can build boost for ages if needed, as only the time down the track counts. Now they need to light up the 2 bulbs and then go within 1 second after green. Makes it a bit faster and more interesting to watch. Sometimes when watching Rocky Mountain Race Week live streams, it can take a long time for a car to make a run.

The (now slightly worse for wear) 2312whp black Chevy Nova was built, and is being driven by Stefan Rossi, an expat from the midlands. ACE Racing EnginesStarted out building/racing aircooled VWs in the UK then moved out to the US in 2019 to set up an engine shop out there. Still builds high spec aircooled motors, and now V8s. He blew a radiator hose on his first run Bradenton and got a bit sideways at 150mph+. Kissed the walls, but no structural damage. They've nursed the car to Gainesville and are still in the event.

Thanks for the info. I watched the day 1 highlights, heard the Brit accent and the UK plate on the front!

Really like the max 1 second RT rule so everything looks like a race Can you explain that and how it differs from normal drag racing? I've tried to keep it succinct but it doesn't seem to be working lol. There are 2 methods of Christmas tree actuation in drag racing, for Sick Week they're using a Pro Tree which means the green light turns on .400 of a second after the 3 Amber lights go off. The time difference between the green light coming on and the car breaking the start line beam is the reaction time. As the winner of a drag race is decided by the whoever has the lowest overall time if you add the reaction time and the E.T together, for competitive racing you obviously want to be launching the car as close to the green light coming on as possible As Drag and Drive events aren't competitive racing (2 cars running but not against each other) there was no need for people to get a good/low reaction time, and therefore you often got cars sitting on the start line with the green light lit for 10, 20, even 30 seconds before launching down the track. It makes the racing very disjointed as the cars rarely run side by side, and also makes the day a lot longer as what should be a race that lasts maybe a minute from burnout to pulling off the end of the track is suddenly twice as long. For Sick Week they've therefore put a limit that you have to launch the car within 1 second of the green light coming on for the pass to count, so even though both cars are not racing per se, it looks more like a race and the event can run quicker.

I know what you're saying stealthstylz, but it always makes me smile when they say you're not racing the car in the next lane, but the clock It's just what they used to say at the RWYB's at the pod. When that light goes green, how many drivers are not competing against the car next to them? 😁

Yup, was a good watch. The ‘drag and drive’ events like Rocky Mountain race week and hot Rod Drag week was what first got me watching drag racing stuff on YouTube.
The mix of road trip in totally unsuitable cars and then the completion makes for great watching.
The 1320 coverage is great, but it’s also great to follow individual competitors YouTube channels to see the daily updates and follow their stories. Obviously the nature of the characters and the quality of the videos varies quite considerably… so a bit of picking and choosing is necessary!
From a retro point of view, it’s great how many of the comparative cars are older models. Clearly there’s little advantage in starting with a new car as a base!
Would be well up for having a go if I lived on the right side of the world!

I've been watching Vice Grip Garage's coverage of their Sick week experience, looks like a cool event, the Roadkill guys were there and filming too so might see that on Amazon in about 6 months or so 😂
Are there enough drag strips left in the UK to do something similar here?..

To be fair in Sweden you don't always stop drag racing when not at venues Thanks for the info, looks like something that would be a good road trip from the UK

I can't believe after all this time that a drag and drive event hasn't been done in the UK yet. Australia has their own event now and sure there was another country outside the US as well. Some years ago there was talk of two seperate events being organised but nothing ever happened with either of them. This was when Avon Park was still a functioning track, though Santa Pod to Avon Park wouldn't have been the most challenging drive! Santa Pod had a drag/drive on their calender for May last year which showed promise but was cancelled due to the continuing 'Rona BS. Santa pod start, York(?) Dragway, back to the pod, think there is a track Cornwall/Devon way and finish back at the Pod. 5 days with decent mileage between them. I do remember some of the comments from before. "Why do have to go to another track?" "Why is there so much driving?" Why is it mid-week, can't it just be a weekend?" So you want a single venue event, over a weekend with no driving? A normal event weekend then.

I can't believe after all this time that a drag and drive event hasn't been done in the UK yet. You kind of answered your own question really. You just end up driving back and forth between Santa Pod and Melbourne Raceway. I looked at if something like this could be arranged before over here, but now days there isn't the volume of venues, sadly.

Could maybe throw in a few of those airfields that do the longer runs? Would see people having to balance getting a better time in the 1/4 mile Vs a slower vmax on a runway etc.
Or the Motorsport venues in this country would probably be better suited to going round a series of hillclimbs, or 1 lap time attack at circuits. However I assume there would be some logistical issues when each person's "run" takes longer than 20 seconds or so 🤔

It'd be more of a challenge over here as you'd only have one prepped track, one no prep but decent surface track and 2 that are on bare runways as far as I know. Would probably put most off. I think I'd prefer to do a multi discipline drag/circuit sprint/top speed/ type event as that would be a bit more inclusive.
Pod Day 1 Elvington Day 2 Melbourne Day 3 Cadwell Day 4 Pod Day 5
Wouldnt be a ton of street driving but enough to prove Street car Ness.

In America it appears that you can drive just about anything you like on the street without falling foul of the law. In the UK having a car that is both competitive and street legal for an event like this could be a lot more of a challenge.

So it would appear, I've recently been watching a YouTube video about mounting a '49 shoebox ford onto a BMW floorplan and mechanics, they've been happily driving that around
