I've seen a car I'd love. It was at a local evening show on Wednesday. It would cost me about four times more than I've ever spent on a car. It's a car I've always loved the shape of, it's got an amazing history, has covered only 42k miles and is immaculate. The guy has only recently purchased it, but he's a long standing friend, and everything is for sale at the right price. He's in no hurry to sell though, which is good, and he's said I have first refusal on it.
I currently have ten cars, which, although I love them all, is far too many, and I just can't seem to get them all moving regularly enough. I really do need to cut the fleet.
To buy this other car, I'd have to probably sell five or six of my current motors, which although it would be difficult to do, as, like I said, I love them all, it would probably be a good thing. I don't even know which ones I'd sell, and which ones I'd keep, no matter how much I think it over.
I'm in a real dilemma. Actually losing sleep over it. Has anyone else been in a similar situation?

Do it. It's great having loads of cars when they work, but you can't rotate them enough for that to be guaranteed. Any more than three or four feels like a massive pain in the , tbh. Write a list if you need help making the decision. Be ruthless.

Never mind all the back ground, what car is it?

I'd only have enough cars you can pay adequate attention to, otherwise why have them.
I'd shrink the fleet and buy this mystery car.

Write a list if you need help making the decision. Be ruthless. That is so right. I have six taxed and on the road, another insured but sorn'd (the 15k mile Rover 25), and 3 projects (3 door Stanza, 4 door Stanza and Tipo) There's an MOT to sort every few weeks and general servicing costs, insurance on seven (not including the motorhome and my wife's car), tax on six and £130 per month storage costs. I've recently had paintshop costs on the Tomcat and the Rover 25, and the blue Stanza is going in in a couple of weeks to sort some small things out in prep for the Festival of the Unexceptional. The 3 door Stanza, also needs a full respray back to it's original blue if my plan for that is to be stuck to. I'd love to be in a position to retire (or semi-retire) in the next couple of years, so I'd have the time, but we wouldn't be flush with disposable cash if we deemed ourselves in a position to ease off.

That's so interesting. Thanks for the link. I've started to read it. Might give me that bit of inspiration and the push I need.

Is this one car is your dream car, go for it. If you prefer it to the 6 youd consider selling, go for it. You cant use 6 cars at the same time, and you cant use one car whilst your busy fixing another. Thats my thoughts anyway.

If the mystery car is your dream car then I would say do it. I did it many years ago with a few aircooled VW's and went from 7 to 3 but part of that involved a house move, when I come to think about it 2 of the 7 I forgot to tell Liz about I also did it with Honda Monkey bikes, if only I had kept them ! I'll take a wild guess at the colour of this car , green by any chance

Would selling 6 get you a dream car, and allow you to get others finished?
I have found having 4 at once to be a pain in the past lol

Regarding which ones to sell, if you are feeling brave put all your cars up for sale at once, withdraw the unsold ones once you reach your target!
Let fate decide!!!

I have finally come to the conclusion that I have far more cars/projects than i will ever have time to actually finish Mk1 son has taken on a RRC that ive owned for years, but has been sat rusting quietly and if he hadn’t started it then there soon wouldn’t have been anything to restore! The classic mini van i have in pieces also has the sale axe hanging over it, but I haven’t been brave enough to actually do anything about it Covid and family pressures have prevented it, but i ‘will’ do something about it soon The 1600e I’ve had for 36 years? That’s going nowhere ! 😀 If getting rid pf some will allow you to concentrate on the others I’d say go for it

Without actually knowing what the dream car is, what cars you'd give up, what those mean to you, and how far behind you are on getting all those cars the way you want them. ( so basically, all the real decision making info is missing and the best we can do is try to translate it to our own situation...) I had to radically thin the herd at some point. This was when I moved to the States. Some of my cars were too new to be EPA exempt. I was very lucky I was able to keep the ones I did, my family allowed me to store them for 5 years until I had the money and the time to go get them. And I had to fight absolutely everybody to get them here ( from my employer at the time, to my wife at the time, to shippers and authorities) So I'm very lucky to still have them. But I miss the ones I had to give up, and I regret I was forced to do it. So I'm in the " No, don't do it" camp.
