Help me out here guys
Went to the Nurburgring about 10 years ago which was absolutely amazing. Sadly my Saxo VTS blew its head gasket 3 days before we left so ending up taking my old mans Rover 400 diesel....... but still mind blowing fun!
Wanted to go back ever since but life happened
Determined to go next year with a mate who is going through a messy divorce and needs something to look forward to.
So I’m thinking buy a £1000 car (to sell for something near that when we return or to leave in Germany if it dies!) Quick service, brakes and tyres if needed and off we go for couple of days
What would you buy for £1000?
• Must be FWD (Mate is a terrible driver and crashing is likely so I’d much prefer under steer than over!) •Don’t want to rebuild the thing before we go so the newer the better •Must be able to get us to Germany, 4-5 laps of ring and back home •Must be reasonably quick (He drives Zafira 140 SRi and I have VW T5 so the bar is pretty low....)
Any thoughts?
John

For £1000? Not sure I’d trust a £1k 172 to get me to the shops let alone the ring and back Great car if I had £3000 budget

they'll be fine, they were made for shopping trips.
my £100 saab 9-3 did 12k miles in 9 months, all I spent on it was a pair of springs and two tyres and one of my spare batteries.

just back from the ring with my best mate in a £500 Mercedes E330TD estate - my two sons came with us in a £260 Alfa 147 :-)
no problems with either car over 1500 miles, classic Spa, Nurburgring, Reims. Paris, Dunkirk.

I would suggest a 2.0 Alfa 147/156/gtv

Surely you already know? Saxo VTR or VTS Had a quick check on ebay and I'd be confident of getting one for a grand with a bit of patience. Or, failing that, ply your hand at catching a Mini Cooper S for the same figure - it's just about doable and they'd be everything you need for that trip.

Ford Puma.
Cheap, nippy with great handling but watch out for rust. The ideal throwaway ‘ring slag.

Toyota Corolla T-Sport. 190bhp, rather economical and cheap!

at the bottom end of the market , i would have thought you would be better off buying the best available example of whatever (within reason) , rather than limiting yourself to a specific model.

'80 s1 924 turbo..hibernating '80 golf gli cabriolet...doing impression of a skip '97 pug 106 commuter...continuing cheapness making me smile!
firm believer in the k.i.s.s and f.i.s.h principles.

Cheers gents. Saxo, mini, puma and even corrola t sport all good shouts but as stated above I think the key is buying something someone else has spent lots of money on already!

Powerful, FWD, safe and reliable? Must be Swedish surely. Probably best going pre-millennium if a Saab though - something with the B2x4 engine. S60 T5s are usually found at giveaway money. I found a C70 T5 for £650 with ease and then found it’s been remapped already to around 280bhp which was a bonus..
Get a V70 T5 and that’s accommodation sorted as well!

There’s a Mondeo ST24 for sale on here somewhere for £300. Quick MOT and you’re set.

It won’t be perfect cosmetically for a grand but will get you there an back with big smiles and very little to worry about.
We bought ours based on the fact they’re used as ‘ring rental cars. Our one has cheap lowering springs and slightly wider tyres - The way it corners is just bordering on incredible. Good brakes and willing engine too.
Second choice would be a Ford Puma. Mega fun too but less reliable and likely to be a bit more rotten.

How about a sportka? I borrowed my mum's for a few days and was impressed with the handling and brakes on it.
