i looked up the MOT history after the thread on here about it, to try to fill in some of the background i don't have for this truck. it looks like there was last an attempted test in 2009, which it failed, the items it failed on have been fixed but it was never represented for test. milage is about what it is now, so it appears its sat for nearly 8 years. ive added comments on the advisories/fail points to show what has or hasnt been done about them.
MOT history of this vehicle
Test date 16 May 2009 Test Result Fail Odometer reading 178,170 miles MOT test number 2711 4643 9421 Reason(s) for failure Service brake: efficiency below requirements (3.7.B.7) has brand new front pads fitted and the brakes work very well Advisory notice item(s) front number plate cracked still cracked now front brakes wearing very low replaced-see above slight play in n/s steering joint i cant find this, even with it on the ramp. further investigation required o/s/f tyre starting to wear on inner and outer tread edges was perished so was replaced anyway
Test date 19 May 2008 Expiry date 24 May 2009 Test Result Pass Odometer reading 176,897 miles MOT test number 6726 8064 8113 Advisory notice item(s) oil leaks nothing major showing; jsut a bit misty around rocker cover? clutch slipping definately isnt now so may have been replaced slight play in front wheels still there drivers window faulty still faulty, needs quides replacing. not sure how thats an advisory though. toe ball obstructing number plate (removed for mot) a reoccuring problem as you'll see. if the number plate was displayed on one line instead of two it wouldnt be an issue
Test date 15 May 2007 Expiry date 24 May 2008 Test Result Pass Odometer reading 175,643 miles MOT test number 8309 2513 7154 Advisory notice item(s) Hazard switch worn nothing wrong with it. id diagnose operator error tbh Nearside front wheel bearing slight play still there
Test date 24 May 2006 Expiry date 24 May 2007 Test Result Pass Odometer reading 175,306 miles MOT test number 8816 8474 6176
Test date 25 May 2005 Test Result Fail Odometer reading 174,034 miles MOT test number 2230 8574 5176 Reason(s) for failure Rear registration plate obscured (6.3.1d) see above Advisory notice item(s) Offside Front Lower Shock absorber has a slightly worn bush (2.7.4) Nearside Front Lower Shock absorber has a slightly worn bush (2.7.4) Offside Rear Lower Shock absorber has a slightly worn bush (2.7.4) Nearside Rear Lower Shock absorber has a slightly worn bush (2.7.4) these obviously havent been replaced, and are in no way worn out of tolerance. they're supposed to move a bit to allow compliance. over zealous tester imho. Nearside Front Front wheel bearing has slight play (2.5.A.3c) still there
Test date 25 May 2005 Expiry date 24 May 2006 Test Result Pass Odometer reading 174,034 miles MOT test number 4730 6574 5179 Advisory notice item(s) Offside Front Lower Shock absorber has a slightly worn bush (2.7.4) Nearside Front Lower Shock absorber has a slightly worn bush (2.7.4) Offside Rear Lower Shock absorber has a slightly worn bush (2.7.4) Nearside Rear Lower Shock absorber has a slightly worn bush (2.7.4) see above Nearside Front Front wheel bearing has slight play (2.5.A.3c) yep, still there front wipers slightly smeary needs new ones now anyway slight play in o/s/f steering idler seem to be well within tolerance to me rear leaf spring bushes splitting perfectly fine of age of vehicle both front flexi brake hoses cracking look ok now so possibly replaced
overall nothing too serious, and only a couple of items for me to investigate further once ive run it down and put a fresh ticket on it myself.

i bought two partworn tyres off ebay for £20 for the other two wheels, so they're now on. i had to fit some spacers for them to clear the trackrod ends though, these things seem to like offset! the stock 7x15s must be about ET0, so with an 8" ET23, its means they have a whole extra 1.5" on the back, so i had to add 10mm to clear and they're still tight, and they look quite tucked. hopefully that will come into its own in the future though, once i fit the set of wheels i have planned. here it is in its '80s sport truck guise- oh, and i had me a little chevy truck convoy going in to work the other day- the reason i mingebagged two partworns is twofold, one because these are only temporary wheels, so i didnt want to spend much on a tyre i only plan to use for a short time, and two becuase this has turned into a £500 build-off competition between me and george and his k10 micra. i had about £65 left in budget before they tyres, so i still have about £45 left for finishing touches!

I'm impressed. Quick turnaround. Ready to feature in The Dukes Of Hazzard! tbh i think its been painfully slow! ive got so much work on at the mo I'm not getting much time to get bits finished off. ive got to run it down for an MOT tomorrow now the wheels and tyres are sorted, so hopefully can spend rest of day trying to finish off the paintwork and numerous other small jobs. ive got a huge snagging list of things that don't work and/or bits i need to buy to fix stuff.

I'm hoping to go a little better than that ;-)
One rule that was agreed to by me and George in the £500 was build off, was that in-stock parts are 'free'. He probably thought this was a good idea as he's got a stash of k10 bits to get his sorted, but he forgets I have a lot of air ride stuff laying round.... So I'm currently trying to fill the gaps between what I have with the last £45 to get me a fully working air setup. :-p
I'll freely admit this is 'cheating' in the grand scheme of things, as its about another £500 with of parts I'll be throwing at it, but thems the rules he agreed to!

well, ICANHAZMOT now. my tester was seriously impressed with the condition of it, and kept calling me quite a few names after he found out how much it didnt cost. only thing he picked up on was the play in the wheel bearings. other than that he couldnt fault it on anything. so, back at the yard and ive finished sanding and painting the rear of the exterior of the bed- just all the fiddy bits around the door tops and pillars to do now. ive also done the bumpers. front was straightforward, just a lot of paint runs and stonechips to flat back before some paint- rear was a bit of a job to straighten that bent corner where it looked like it had been reversed into something. the rear bumper is a mixture of 3mm and 6mm plate, the bent bit being 3mm. still took a lot of force with the portapower to push it back out, i had to run it all the way back to the front spring hanger to get something solid enough to push off. with the shape pushed back out i then took it off for some final fettling on the ramp bed with a lump hammer. its come out pretty well to be honest. then asand back on the flat bits, knotwheel on the checkerplate section, a clean up of the lights, so more paint and back togehter. sounds quick when you say it like that but it took best part of a day in reality. the corner that was bent- I'm happy with the colour of the bumpers, it will be carried through on the wheels (Not the current ones). but all it does is show up the body colour, so it looks like I'm going to have to order some more paint in a colour that works better. i think I'm going to give up on trying to get the savannah beige colour i wanted, the subtleties of shade neccessary are lost when mail ordering cans off a colour chart, plus neither montana or graff city seem to give a sh1t about colour match or even colour being consistent between batches, so I'm going to go for something darker that still works with the ivory.

Followed this from the beginning but I think I tried to avoid it because I can never get as much awesomeness for my money it seems! Super cool and has to nab the £500 awesome challenge title surely.

i have an update, but its not a particularly good one. i tried to go to the northern swapmeet. around cambridge, it was business as usual on the A14- i made it through the traffic, and i got as far as stamford before it massively overheated. so hot it was burning off the oil on the head from a rocker cover leak. i let it cool a bit and chucked in what water i had with me, then limped it off the A1 into a fairly ghetto area somewhere on the edge of stamford, stopped at a pub and filled it back up fully and let it cool further. i could see it was pressurising the coolant and chucking a lot of steam out the exhaust, but it didnt seem to be mixing fluids and as i was closer to my destination (my parents near doncaster)than home so decided to chance it and see what happened. drove the remaining 70 miles at 55mph without issue, until i came off the A1 near retford, and i could see this in my rear view- by the time i was at my grans, it was full kettle spec- so i dumped it there and used my dads car to go to the swapmeet. monday morning i rang up the AA, and after some waiting, a patrol who obviously could do nothing, some more waiting, the first truck who could only go as far as peterbrough with his remaining tach time, even more waiting and then a third party recovery to sort out the AAs inability to plan, i got back to the yard in essex at about 7pm. i order a headgasket from the states on the way home, as i know it would take a while to turn up. a couple of days later i started to take it apart. its fair to say these engine are an utter ba$tard to get apart whilst in situ, now having done it it i know it would have been 100X easier to drop it complete then strip it. i guess i know which cyls are causing the issue- i also found at least a partial cause. blocked thermostat bypass which means the head gets no coolant flow when the thermostat is closed. still barely mixing fluids- and the head off. i was worried it would be cracked with how hot it got, as they are known for doing so. seem i managed to get away with it and its just a bit warped. spot the problem. gasket is proper f-ked. steam cleaned cylinders- and lastly a cheery happy pic of the air setup parts that have been arriving!

I'm still a scruffy curse word though i was around and about with KFW, matt stealthstylz, dave bools, james, ryan etc, etc. but didnt actually stay for ages as it was a lot quieter than last year. id looked round 4 times in a couple of hours. still managed to buy a model A pickup bed, some shocks to go on the shoebox, and and some wheel cyls for the A though.

Rotton luck but not the end of the world. how is the 500 budget looking now? new gasket was £23 so if i can get a skim done cheap enough, I'm still a few quid under budget! Surely time for a few more cylinders! Tom tempting but ive got far too much else on at the mo to go that route. this is supposed to be the sensible daily driver! Cool looking truck. I'm enjoying the story so far. Bookmarked thanks. Nice to see another S10! Although yours is the cooler version! Will be following this from now on. underneath they're rather similar. although the body was totally redesigned, the running gear is much the same, apart from updated engine options. most of the suspension stuff is the same 82-02.

Long overdue update. I bought a head gasket. Turned up Like this- To be expected with such crepe packaging. Yeah, it's f-ked- I got a refund but it meant I had to do that but all over again. I actually got a better deal second time round though and get a full fel-pro top end kit for hardly any more. Non pic though. So whilst it was sat around broken I decided to do something about how visible the front suspension was, and the chassis rails. They're a bit odd on these in that they stick out under the bumper, like so- So I bought one of these. It's factory style but aftermarket without the towing eye holes so it looks a bit cleaner. Was pretty cheap but isn't amazing quality, looks ok fitted though, and tidies up the front end a lot which was the aim. Then, much f-King around later I find someone competent enough to do the head who don't take 6 months. Took 4 places before I got it done mind. 20 thou of cast iron turned into swarf later, and I have it back- So, then some of this went on. Everything was decoked, deburred, valves lapped, then back together with new stem seals. I got it all back together and torqued down, only to find the thermostat housing looked like this once cleaned up- Balls. So I ran it up to my mate doug at G19 engineering, he of mx5 turbo kits fame, and picked it up the next day vapour blasted and with all the missing bits welded up and a new pipe stub added. Top stuff. I then went and hassled Wilco motorsave in Ipswich, who did me a new thermostat from spec rather than application for a whole 4 quid. Good people who didn't mind me Thumbing through the catalogs to find what I needed. So with that done I changed the oil and filter, refilled the coolant and it was good to go. A bit lumpy at first as everything seemed to be damp from it sitting for 3 months, but once warmed up it settled down to a nice misfire. Best change the plugs then. FFS- Even more FFS- Although, snapping the extractor off in the remaining but was sort of a bit of a blessing, as it meant I could do this to remove it without fear of getting anything down the bore- Problem solved- And it's now back on the road, running OK-ish (there's an induction air leak somewhere I can't find, probably one of the 4 million vac hoses on this injection system). More importantly the heater is toasty hot and the cooling system all seems to be ok now.
