so, the pace have picked up a bit now parts are here. this turned up thurs- again, ebay global being quicker than USPSand royal mail! i was able to mock it in place and ascertain that it was the right one, i was a bit unsure as theres a LOT if handbrake parts options on these, but thankfully with a bit of research i got it right. then, i refitted the tank thurs eve. what a ballache of a job. its fairly obvious that when they built these, the fitted the tank to the chassis and plumbed it before the bed went on, which means trying to refit it without removing the bed is a horrendous job. even with the tank empty and the truck on the ramp, it took the best part of 2 hours to get all 5 hoses on and the clips tightened, plus the wiring before actually doing up the tank straps again. heres a pic of it fitted- by that point id had enough of inventing new swearwords, so i went home. id still not seen the truck run and my insurance transferred over at midday saturday (today).

parcel farce has also finally decided to tell me they wanted some duties off me, after a week of my handbrake mech floating around the country. i really hate this company, everything about how they operate is sh1t. i went down their depot and did so, meaning i finally had this in my hands- 20 mins after getting back to the workshop, it was fitted, the cable threaded through, and the yoke fitted. my research hda paid off, it was all the correct parts and went together with no issues. so with that done i loosely assembled the dash back over it all, and chucked 20 quids worth of juice in it. then was the moment of truth. only a few seconds of cranking and it fired right up! smoky as f-k, but that cleared fairly quickly, and apart from a slight misfire at idle, it all seems ok. it has been sat for anything up to 10 years, so i guess some plugs and leads wouldnt go amiss. here it is after blapping up and down the track and round the yard for a bit to clean off the brakes, etc. you can see the colour tester of the eye searing pistachio paint there too. good news is its all OK. nothing like hearing a car first run less than 24hrs before it becomes your daily.... even the air-con works! so, much tigerseal, metal re-enforcing plates and self tappers later, the dash is all stuck back together and braced in key areas, and the rest of it all reassembled. only two cracks are visible, so its not turned out to bad. the cab is a very '80s place to be in some ways(the dash), others not(tuck and roll bench seat). that lot took quite a lot of time though, the only other thing i managed was sorting out wheels and tyres. a set of T5 transporter wheels have been in the yard tyre pile for a while, no one quite knows whos they were or why they're there, as no one up here has ever had a T5. so i claimed them, and set to holesawing the centrebores out bigger so they fit, as the PCD is the same, and they have legal tyres, and free is good at the moment. now, ive got to drive back down the yard before 12, as thats when the insurance on my current mazda truck transfers over to the chevy.

2.5L 4 cyl, pontiac derived IIRC, known as the 'iron duke'. its a pretty basic single point injection system, but then has odd features like roller rockers as standard. they have the reputation for being pretty tough, and liking a bit of boost as well...

it is.
but then its also interesting that its also a nuts and bolts swap (if you have the right bellhousing) to bolt an SBC v8 up to this gearbox.
theres lots of options with these trucks.

another loooong day on saturday, my insurance changed over at 12noon, so the plan was drive in in the mazda in the morning, spend all day on this then go home in it. far too long was spent fixing the shoddy wiring to my compressor, the landlord needed to make some changes to the 3 phase supply, which revealed problems of a previous tenant in the unit next door messing with things and swapping wires around, and it took us a while to figure out what he'd done. quite scary to see he'd done away with the earth, using the earth wire as one of the lives, then used the wire meant for the live for the neutral?! nothing like people who f-k with things when they don't know what they're doing.... but once that was all done, i swapped some tyres round on the front wheels, then set to with the D/A to get the rest of the flaky laquer off. tbh it ripped it off pretty quick using 120 grit pads, and actually left a pretty good finish to paint over. its so straight, i didnt have to do any filler work at all so far, there is a couple of small areas need work, but they're only minor. the plan was basically to get the major areas dewolfed and painted, with the fiddly bits that needed more work and any areas that need bodywork attention left for now. george gave me a hand with the sanding and painting, which I'm thankful for as it was too much to get done by myself. I'm not 100% happy with the montana cans though. they cover well and are good to work with, but half of them must be from a different batch to the others are they're obviously a different colour. some messing about replacing fuses to coax various electrickery back to life then happened, and once id got a full compliment of lights, i drove it home last night as planned. it drives rather nice. i can see why everyone wants to use them for chassis swaps! brakes are surprisingly sharp once theyd scrubbed the rust off the discs, the T5 gearbox is worthy of its reputation, its a nice box to drive, the steering is quite light to say there no PAS, and its not lacking in power, will even spin the wheels up when floored! the 'service engine soon' light come on about halfway back, which was to be expected really, and just before i got home (about 15 miles, not taking it particularly easy), the water light came on and it was starting to puke water out of the expansion tank as i parked on the drive. this needs investigating, i hoping its just a sticky thermostat, or that a coolant flush will sort it. anyways, some pics of how it now stands- the plan now is to finish off painting and tidying up the exterior, whilst sorting out a set of wheels and some lows. the interior needs a bit of work, some ICE to fill the hole in the dash, then i think i want a hard tonneau cover to finish off the back seeing as the hardtop doesnt really fit.

This graffiti paint thing is intriguing me. What's the advantage of using that over "normal" car spray paint? I have a bonnet I need to change the colour of in the garage to replace the rotten one on the car....

Compared to normal rattlecans it's cheap, hi solids so covers well and really easy to get a good finish. It's pretty tough too.

My Dolly has been painted in Montana paint for about 5 years now. Still looks alright and the vast majority of it is still stuck to the car. Would agree that the cans can vary wildly though.

Looking mega. Hope the over heating is an easy fix. Should be a tidy little truck with a bit more time in it did the same journey again twice without issue. checked the coolant and its full, smells/tastes of coolant, and isnt too brown, maybe the thermostat was jsut gummed up a bit and its freed itself off now? i guess ill have to do a longer journey to find out.

Would agree that the cans can vary wildly though. what theyve said really. its a £40-45 paintjob, and for that money its not at all bad. loads of people on here have done it, probably a dozen of my mates i know through this forum have montana paintjobs. the 'prepwork' ive done is massively basic, i just DAed the whole thing with 120 grit to get rid of the flaky, non-stuck laquer, panel wiped it with celly thinners then then went in with the cans. as they're so high solids they easily cover even 120 grit sanding marks. i mailed graff city about the massively different colours for what are supposed to the the 'same' colour cans, and they asked me to check the batch numbers on the bottoms of the cans. it turns out 5 of the 11 cans i bought are over 2 1/2 years old, whereas the others are under 6 months old. i waiting to hear back with what they say about that.

You are brave, I once dip tested an overheating HB Viva and it definitely wasn't straight coolant! I did hear later that the so called mate responsible had suffered a painful burn for his troubles😊 Good score with the S10, you deserve it.

I'm currently driving it round for a week or two fixing issues as i go, then ill give it a full service once its loosened itself up.

more little bits ordered, more ebay global shipping. this- goes here, to replace the one that was not there anymore- it cost a little bit more than i would have liked, but sometimes its easier to just buy the right thing rather than try to mess about finding something else to do the job to save a tenner. next, i found the offset of the transporter rims to be a bit tight, putting the tyres too close to the inner arches- they scrubbed occasionally. the tyres were also too tall, and made the gear ratios very odd. so, i set to sorting out these 16x8 remotec mesh i had to fit instead. they're machined for opel bolts, a 18mm diameter shank nut, which i was having trouble finding at non stupid prices., but you could also get them to take standard BMW taper seat bolts, so i decided to sort of machine them for those. well, i actually went in between and used ford 'ghia' type nuts, which are half a shank nut and half a taper seat, mostly because they're the right thread and i had a box full of them. first, ream the holes out to 19mm for the shank- then, take this- one of the mist useful things ive ever bought- and cut the seats- ive done two so far to test the theory, other two to do once ive got some more tyres to go on. i chucked some tyres on, 205/55R16, as i had them, they give the square profile i want, and are about right height wise to not mess with gear ratios too much. fitted- they fit pretty well, but man do they show up how bloody high this thing is!
