i got a phone call from a customer of mine last thursday. it went something along the lines of- 'do you want a free S10' 'er, wut? whats the catch?' 'its got murals on it' 'okaaaaaay...' 'its my mates, he wants the gearbox out of it (5spd manual), if you pull the box out you can have the rest. he needs it out the way though so needs to know. might do you for the axle or chassis or something' 'deal' he sent me some pics to see what i was getting myself in for(I'm still recovering). i then negotiated to buy the gearbox off him so i could keep the truck complete, as it was a case of 'wanted' rather than 'needed'. so basically this thing has cost me £200 and £60 to get it delivered. these are the pics he sent me- I'm pretty sure youll all agree, that its pretty spectacular. still, the rear axle was worth more than i was paying for the lot, so it was a done deal.

the hardtop is already off, mostly because whatever its for, it isnt for an S10. see that alloy wedge shaped strip down the side? thats on top of a block of wood, put in each side to make it 'fit'. which it really doesnt. bit of a shame as a hardtop would have been useful, but one that doesnt seal is about as much use as not having one at all. i will come to the plans later on... but first, a few phonecalls on monday, and i got al of al's classics (moparal on rods and sods) to go pick it up for me on tuesday, as it was local to him and he knows the guy i got it off. here it is being dropped off at the yard. first time i got to see the other side of it, it could have been missing entirely for all i knew! notice george is dumbfounded by the awesomeness of what lies before him, and hes rooted to the spot as he has trouble taking it all in.... i also got to see the quality artwork on the bonnet. who wouldnt want to be driving down the road looking at that- it also highlights what is going to be the biggest issue with this truck. ALL the laquer peel.

Ohhh, I thought that the lacquer peel was the art work you referring to.....
But serious now....how big/small is your car? similar to a Hilux? I don't think I have ever seen this model car.
Cheers

You need one of these to drive that in! Amazing. That airbrushing can't have been cheap, aside from being tacky as hell it looks like it was pretty well done, you do wonder how things like this happen, and on that vehicle too?

It's a wonderful ball of shonk. I'd be DA'ing everything that *isn't* airbrushed, and laquering the whole thing tight.

Those murals are beyond awesome. I would drive that every day, knowing I had won with my car over everyone else.
The only way you can make that car worse is by removing the murals.
I honestly, no joke, would love that side mural on the side of my Volvo.

Remove the canopy, invert the rear springs and remove the hubcaps.. job done. Less is more just slam it. In time the hub caps will find their own way off the car

Cheers about the same width as a hilux, but shorter bed. in the states at this period there was a bit of a thing for 'short box' single cab pickups. its the same width/cabsize as my mazda b2000, but the wheelbase and bed is 10" sorter, meaning its over a foot shorter overall as it has a smaller front bumper. they're common as muck in the states, but really not that common here despite them being a really practical truck for uk roads. in the US they get used for chassis swaps on literally everything, as they're a very good chassis thats baput the right dimensions for 40s-50s fendered cars.

and I'm sorry to dissapoint everyone, but the murials will be going. two reasons, 1.- all the current paint needs DAing off as it isnt really stuck to the original red paint, and 2.- the missus says not to bring it home 'til its not got wolves on it. the truth is tht this truck is near mint under that paint. theres not a speck of rust, and no panel damage bigger than a 5p car park ding on it, with the possible exception of what looks like a bit of filler on one front wing i need to investigate. the underneath all looks like this, mega clean- and the inside of the bed is like this- no rust at all, just 2 or 3 small dents to the wheel tubs. the tailgate is mint. as you can see, i removed this- not really sure what I'm gunna do with it, i need to figure out what its for really. possibly a later s10, or the US market only shortbed mazda b2000.

so, time for a bit of a walk round it to point out the pertinent features and problem areas. its got a f-koff heavy plate step bumper on it(most of it is 1/4" plate!), that i think will be staying, as it'll make lots of sparks when dragged on the floor. i need to tidy up the foglight, trailer wiring and sort a different plate though, as well as straighten up the other corner, as its bent. its also got an opening rear window, so you can still talk to your kids whilst driving. its needs a clean up though as all the frame is covered in sealant from the hardtop- it looks like the rear axle has been replaced at some point, as there's junkyard greasechalk on it saying 's10' and something else i cant read, so i need to drop the cover and see what ratio it now it, as it may effect my wheel choice. oh, and i have a weller. just the one mind- this is all i have on the handbrake setup. the cable from each rear brake comes up and is joined with two joiners and a very short bit of cable just below the gearbox tailshaft. ive been on 'murican ebay and have managed to get the handbrake pedal, release mech and the bit of dash it fits to, a new cable and an equaliser mech for £120(nearly 2/3 of which was shipping), which is all currently on its way across the water. if only whover removed the setup from this could have managed that... inside. it has a bench seat, and some pretty cool aircraft latch style seatbelts. and half the dash smashed up and spread through the cab. this is after i cleaned out all the rubbish. some of the interior plastics have been painted, as well as the bench seat dyed which is now wearing off. its got a few rips too so will get recovered. tbh the finish on this door card is pretty good, its a metallicy maroon, and isnt all flaking off and stuff. shame they only did one as ill never colour match it! this side on the other hand, is bloody awful. red paint flakes off over time you touch it, so ill take the jetwash to it and see how much i can get off. the 'door cards' in this are actually entire black ABS type plastic, with various textured bits to make it look like faux tuck and roll. see this gaping void? there should be a foot-operated handbrake lever there. unfortunately to make said gaping void, whoever took the handbrake out smashed the dash to pieces. i've gone through the cab and picked out all the broken bits of plastic, and 99% of it is there, so i'm just gunna glue it all back together. there's only one or two mounting tabs missing that can be replicated with plastic/milliput/tigerseal. some bits seem to have been brken before, the dash plastics on these have a reputation for being fragile, and there's evidence of glue on some parts already. whilst i was under the dash, i had a look at the electrics with a view to getting it running. theres no keys, but you don't need them, you don't actually turn the key in GM ign. switch of this period, you grip it by a collar on the switch, which seems to work without the key! what i did need though was the keyfob for the alarm, which i didnt have, so an hour or so later and a few rejoined wires, i have this- i think i took out more than was left! i also removed a super shonky cruise control system that ran off manifold vac. pressure and a magnetic pickup on the prop! it now cranks, but didnt seem like it was getting fuel. throw a bit down the 'carb' and itll fire and run for a few secs, so i stuck my head against the fuel tank whilst george cranked it over, and i couldnt hear the fuel pump, so guessed it was that, as they're an in-tank submersable. the fuel in the tank also stank if you took the filler cap off and had a sniff, so i decided next job was to drop the tank. as proper work was halted as we had a power cut yesterday whilst some cabling was replaced, i decided to do it then. actually came out pretty easily- bloody massive dent to the front of the tank, entirely hidden when fitted by a big thick plastic tank protector- guess it did its job! ill probably just leave it seeing as it doesnt leak. fuel pump out and bench tested. wiring checks out ok so pump is very much dead. not surprising seeing the fuel though, it was the colour of coke and the consistency of diesel! got about 15L of it out of the tank, but forgot to take a pic. this is the residue left behind in the 'swirl pot' (swirl box?). I'm gunna jetwash it out and leave it to dry for a few days. so, once its got a fuel pump in, it should be a runner! i reckon all it then needs is the handbrake bits fitting when they turn up, the dash glueing back togehter and some wheel/tyre juggling to get matched pairs on axles, a few bulbs, and it'll MOT.

got started on the tedious job of sanding back the curse word paint on this today, in between finishing up a electric power steering conversion on a '67 mustang, and dodging the weather. started with the thickest, most horrible bit with the most lacquer peel, the bonnet. the paint on other areas is much thinner, thankfully. also made it down the majority of one front wing, and dug out the only visible patch of filler from the other one, which shows little more than a parking ding. ive gone back as far as the factory paint, but i have gone through to the undercoat and bare metal in various places where its been sanded back previously. either way, its a good enough base to paint over, unlike the black. the rest is all very good with no hidden nasties, not a spot of rust and only a couple of tiny dings.
