I basically have a budget of £1500 to get my next runabout.
Ive looked at C class coupe Mercs, a Williams Clio and an XR3i.
Dazzle me with inspiration - BUT! It must be a car i can use as a daily and would be reliable, and useable.
Go!

The answer to any question like this is MX5
Considering what you've been looking at already you're clearly not looking for some awful vag oil burner so clearly ignore the above.

VAG diesels are anything but awful - was about to suggest a sister car, Fabia VRS, if you can get one for the money, as they're quick, economical and reliable. Perfect daily!

Depends on whether you have a retro project as well or not.
For an only car, a W124 Mercedes has to be the answer - £1500 should land you with a decent 6-pot version (maybe even a 300-24v?). My S124 (estate) has the correct - and very period - 15-hole alloys, but I do keep wondering how a mint 124 would look on big Schmidt TH-lines....

You'll struggle to get a Fabia vRS for that kinda money.
How about a Saxo VTS, lightweight, buzzy and great around corners. Finding a non chavved one may be a challenge.

could get an IS200 for that kinda money I'm thinking... lacking a bit of power and not the most economical but a bloody good chassis, quite at home on both an m/way or a twisty road and very comfortable to keep your passengers happy. Parts aren't that expensive either. go for an S for a much nicer interior and an LSD as standard, try and get one thats already got aftermarket wheels on as the standard ones seem to be very poor quality with lacquer peeling off and stopping the tyres from sealing properly. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lexus-IS-200-Sport-/271505273389?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item3f36f9b22dbuy some wheels with the change....

It must be a car i can use as a daily and would be reliable, and useable. Go! My answer to this would be to buy Classic Car Weekly/Buyer and keep an eye on Ebay/online classic classified ads and go and look at any reasonable sounding saloon built in the '60s that took my fancy, buying something that was in reasonable condition with a decent bit of MOT. But that's probably not the droids answer you're looking for.

But that's probably not the droids answer you're looking for. Possibly, but it would be the correct answer for the Retro Rides forum.

But that's probably not the droids answer you're looking for. When I was out the other day, I spotted a Standard 10 with a for sale sign in the window that would have been this. MOT and tax exempt, good(ish) on fuel, just avoid motorways If it was me, I'd probably look at something like a Celica or a Mk2 MR2, but then I'm also looking at Jags currently... A good thing to do is to just put a £1500 max price on a blank ebay search showing nearest first and see whats about

This is the exact criteria I have every winter....£1500 and interesting.
I have been in this situation a few times in the past and have always easily found a car.
Astra gte E30 318is Golf gti mk2 Along with many others.
But it seems to be getting a lot harder, of the list above the prices have rocketed.
I personally think I am going to have to lift my budget this winter, but my point is retro good interesting £1500 cars are becoming slim pickings compared to what has been, please update us with what you get!

Saab 9-3 (that budget will easily buy a 205bhp Aero, possibly a tired Viggen) or 9-5 (again, the 250bhp Aero would be well within reach). Much faster than you'd think and free remapping at home via T7 Suite for that bit more.
Lots of toys as standard and longevity is renowned. All the common faults are well known and easily remedied. Sludging is the killer, just look out for evidence of a sump drop and fully synthetic oil.

But you'll suffer with the INCURABLE electrical faults that they're VERY well known for. I've had 3, spent 6 months chasing electrical issues, then gave it to Lexus who wanted £2100 for a new ECU in the drivers footwell, that they didn't think would cure the problem but were going to try it anyway as it was a last option.
