could get an IS200 for that kinda money I'm thinking... lacking a bit of power and not the most economical but a bloody good chassis, quite at home on both an m/way or a twisty road and very comfortable to keep your passengers happy. Parts aren't that expensive either. go for an S for a much nicer interior and an LSD as standard, try and get one thats already got aftermarket wheels on as the standard ones seem to be very poor quality with lacquer peeling off and stopping the tyres from sealing properly. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lexus-IS-200-Sport-/271505273389?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item3f36f9b22dbuy some wheels with the change.... But you'll suffer with the INCURABLE electrical faults that they're VERY well known for. I've had 3, spent 6 months chasing electrical issues, then gave it to Lexus who wanted £2100 for a new ECU in the drivers footwell, that they didn't think would cure the problem but were going to try it anyway as it was a last option. interesting, I've had mine for 4 years now with no electrical faults

I've seen some nice Scimitar GTEs around that price, that's where I'd be looking.

Peugeot 205GTI.
You could get a 206GTI and a SportKA for that money, but they aren't that retro yet and a Clio RS would be a better steer.
But predictable, but BMWs with sixes can be found for that money too.

bmw e36 either a 328 or my favourite, a 318is. quick enough to be entertaining, bomb proof reliability, easy to make them look good, and my 318is does 48mpg on a steady run. Plus decent e36s are starting to dry up. If you buy the right one you wont lose money on it

318i e36 diff strong enough?... they were made of chocolate on the e30's... I went through a fair few of them... ... that might have had something to do with my driving style at the time though.

924 (I'm biased) great value and make a good practical daily. Also a bit different from the norm. I was going to suggest the same thing. It will hold it's price, simple bits, nice big hatch and a cool thing to mooch about in

What about a late / immaculate Senator B ? I used to sometimes drive a 3.0 24v and to say it was quick is an understatement Paul H

I have owned 2 of these before and has to be the best value for money cars about. They are very reliable, extremely comfortable, surprisingly good on fuel and really fast. Lexus LS400 If you haven't drive one yet, then you have to drive one.

I am biased but I'd hunt out a Triumph Toledo or a Triumph Dolomite... You won't get a minter (or a Sprint) but you will find something for your budget that is usable, reliable and damn good fun to drive. They're cheap to run, easy to work on and make you grin like a loon!!!!!!!

I forgot about this thread!
I'm erring towards something german, there was a nice 944 in Gateshead which i have been watching on ebay but after seeing the back seats i just wouldnt get anything in there. I do have kids, and would still be able to take them to school.
I'm still looking relatively locally, but struggling to find anything interesting enough. I do like that Scimitar though.
Ive been looking at GTTDI Mk4 Golfs / 1.8t Golfs. But I'm not stuck in my ways. Some good replies though, looking about.
205gtis seem to bring daft money, as do Mk2 Golfs. An MR2 / MX5 again are out due to only having two seats. Celica, maybe. The search continues..

I've had a 944, but currently I'd go for the Williams. Wonderful car for track day and everyday, and with good luck will be worth more when selling than buying...
Edit: just a note why the Williams. I look at cars as what can I have now, but won't be able to have in 10-20years time... Just look at if the car is common or not, can you buy one later on if you choose to change... We're not usually with the same car for our whole lifetime...

205gtis seem to bring daft money, as do Mk2 Golfs. You're looking in the wrong places if you can't find either of the above for under £1500. I'd buy that R5GTT linked earlier in the thread!
