So another day of work on the Austin. If this lockdown carries on much longer I might actually get this car back on the road. First thing on my list of jobs was to sort out the bottom corner of the wheel arch. There is a strip of metal that holds a rubber sealing gasket in place. It’s their to stop water and mud from getting trapped inside the wheel arch and rotting out the A post. I’ll just cut that little bit off and have a look. Yeh that didn’t go well. So I cut that lot out. And recycled a piece from the other new floor pan that didn’t fit. I needed a section that had a folded edge. I then carefully bent it in to shape in my vice with my hands. And gave it a little finesse with a hammer. Then it was a case of carefully welding it in. I had to put a piece of copper behind, as it blew holes in two places. And also attached the new floor to the wheel arch. Then I could cut away some of the outer sill, so that I had access to weld the last part of the floor to inner sill. So now my floor is finally in. It’s been a stumbling block for a long time. So hopefully I can really crack on on with the rest of it now.

Looks like the seat gets quite close to the door window, or is it just way it looks in the pic. Might not want to slam the door to hard lol.

So I had some fun and games, trying to get the new floor panel to fit the large hole that I made. This was a panel that I picked up at Beaulieu auto jumble about 19 years ago. Back then you just didn’t see any replacement panels for these cars. So I grabbed them as well as the repair panels for the bottom of the wings. The person selling them had made them himself. And appeared to be setting up a business making panels. As you can see it is not quite right. Especially around the wheel arch. So I cut that bit off and attempted to fit it. Thinking that I could do something with that bit afterwards. But it just kept on fighting me all the way. Until I had enough and pulled it out and lobbed it to one side. I put an order in with Bull motif and brought one from them. Plus a couple of other bits. That lot cost me half of the price I paid for the Austin back in 1999. And that was Taxed & MOT. The new panel fits a lot better. And gave me a chance to try my new Cleco pins to hold it in place. And today I did most of the welding. I still have to do the section around the wheel arch. Which once clamped pulls into shape ok. I also have to attach it to the inner sill. That’s a job for tomorrow.

I made one of those for my Trabant so I could set the timing. I will see if I can take a picture of it in the morning. I've always used a screwdriver I was in my garage today working on the Austin. So remembered to take a photo.

I made one of those for my Trabant so I could set the timing. I will see if I can take a picture of it in the morning. I've always used a screwdriver I have to admit that I forgot to take the picture today. Mainly because it was chucking it down with rain so I didn’t venture into the garage. The timing has to be spot on with a Trabant. The crank is a push fit so you can end up with the pistons going out of position. Just out of natural curiosity when I last set the timing, I borrowed a timing light and double checked it. And to my surprise my home made gadget was 100% spot on.

Saw a pic the other day, now cant find it ! Its an old spark plug with all the innards removed, making it hollow. A long bolt put through the middle. When its screwed into the plug hole, the long bolt's head touches the piston CROWN and moves up with it, indicating top dead centre. A nut is put on the outside, so preventing the bolt falling into the cylinder when the piston is lower than the bolt length. i will post a pic when I find an old plug and make one! I made one of those for my Trabant so I could set the timing. I will see if I can take a picture of it in the morning.

Those clips are not designed for bumpers, they are designed for storage boxes and furniture. I have used them plenty of times at work before. You can get better quality ones but I still wouldn’t trust them to hold something on a car.

Ahh this all looks familiar territory. 🤣 Good to see you back on it, ours has been ongoing for quite some time too. Some nice repairs you're making, keep up the good work.👍 Thanks for the kind words. I will have a crack at the floor tomorrow. The repair panel isn’t a great fit in that big hole in the floor. So not sure how well it will turn out, but I’ll give it a go.

So another day of lockdown another day in the garage. I had a second repair panel for the other wing. So I thought I might as well have a go at that. As you can see this wing is no better than the other side. Actually it’s in worst condition as the front around the headlight is totally rotten. So next cut off the rotten area, and put a step in it with the juggler. Then I take my time welding a bit at a time, trying not to put too much heat into the panel. Then it’s just a case of grinding and sanding to tidy it up a bit. I also had to cut off the flange with the hole in it for the bolt. As The new panel doesn’t come with this. A quick coat of zinc primer and after a bit of tweaking it fits quite well. So that’s it for today but I suppose I better have a look at this little problem.

Thanks, I just took my time. Spreading the welds out to try and stop it warping. On the wheel arch lip I couldn’t use the jogger and the metal was thinner than it looked. So it blow a couple of small holes with the welder. I used a bit of copper behind the hole to bridge the gaps, then built it up with welds and grind it back.

Well It’s been a while since I put anything on here about this, but given the current situation I suddenly have some free time. So every now and then I have had a go at trying to do something to the Austin. Mainly cutting out lumps of rust. But I just couldn’t Get my mojo going. But today I thought I would have a go at one of the small jobs. So set about repairing one of the front wings. As you can see it’s a bit frilly, and there was a lump of ally & filler in the bottom or the wing. So a quick chop with a grinder and some welding, and we end up with this I used a joggler tool to form a step so the repair panel had a nice fit. I haven’t done much welding before so I was quite pleased how it turned out. I have just ordered a repair panel to sort out the front of the wing out. You can see how long ago I brought that repair panel as it still has £20.00 written on it. The same panel would now cost £48.00.

austinpowers yup we had school teachers like that, didn’t actually turn our minibuses over, but I have memories of ‘oh look at that lamppost, oh we’ve hit it!’ Amongst other things When they brought in minibus licensing I thought thanks for that! In are case the teacher was in the clear. A nob in a brand new Vauxhall Calibra went through a red light at a crossroad. It t-boned us, and impacted right where I was sitting. The bus was flipped on to its side took out a traffic light slide about 20 metres and came to rest in a bus stop. Luckily we all walked away and I only had a black eye. Ironically the police said that if I had my seatbelt on I probably would have been killed on impact.
