Well I managed to get the other side of this prepped and a coat of high build on. Just need to clean it off and 800 all areas to be painted and I am getting close to painting. Got a week off in 9 days time so should get a good chunk of it done. Only got 1 pic so far of this side. Over the last month I have had to get rid of the daily mondeo due to the clutch slave cylinder giving up, with the projects I already have on the go I was reluctant to take it on as I would have had to do it in the street so I brought a Passat B5 1.8T to run about in. It's a nice ride with just 72k on the clock and I managed to pick a set of cheep wheels up so just need to lower it now. It has kind of cost me a few days on the fiesta swapping cars so I may have been better off fixing the Mondeo but the Passat drives better and has half as many miles on it, should also look better once lowered etc.

Couple more pics to bring this up to date. Got some high build on the rear panel. Then had to turn it round which gave me the chance to get a pic of the side which was the worst of the 2 sides. Front end waiting for high build primer. Then got all the bits and wiring off the inner wings ready for prep and paint. I think the decision is made on the paint that the engine bay both sides and front and rear panel will be painted here by me. I just carn't bring myself to pay someone to do it and be disapointed with the masking and missed areas that will be evident when it returns. If I mess it up I only have myself to blame.

coming along nicely phil. you must have a very understanding other half..... Cheers Roger. My Mrs does let me get away with more than most I suppose. We have been together 19 years so she ain't going to change me now. This is progressing well. Good work as always too. Cheers I am trying not to go overboard as I don't want to make it to good to use every day. I was so tempted to take the tank and beam off and start detailing the underside.

Nice and original I like the mats, tyres, radio. Nice find. I had 1 of these about 15 years ago HFM38X which was stolen off the Mrs drive and never seen again. You seem to be doing a cracking job so far.

Well I managed to get some front shocks from a different seller and fitted the front end back together. I fitted shocks, shock boots, top mount bearings would go for the best alternative. I also got a pair of tyres to match the 2 previously brought. Got them for £78 and it cost me £10 for fitting so not bad at £148 for all 4 fitted. Next up was to get it in the garage to start prepping which envolved taking the tent down and moving all the cars round. I am about 45% done on the prep work but have only took 1 pic so far. I currently have white dials fitted that have gone yellow with age, which look terrible. So I got me a set of clocks off ebay for £20 delivered. They turned upi today. What a joke. The seller thought it would be a good idea to wrap in 1 pass of bubble wrap and plastic bag! I can still use the dials to rebuild mine and keep my mileage which matches the engine but thats not the point, I didn't buy a broken set of clocks, but I will have to see how I get on with complaining about that.

The centre bore is no problem to overcome but I don't want spacers fitted hence wanting to know the offest. The wheels are the right price otherwise I would have dismissed them because of the half soaked seller.

I am looking at buying these wheels for my B5 Passat but the guy selling them does not know the offset. I have tried explaining how to find this info on the wheels but he don't seem interested. Do any of you Mercedes gurus know what offset they are going to be? Or does anyone know what model Merc they were fitted to when new? They are 18 inch and fitted with 225/40/18 tyres. That is as much as I know

Well I had a result with the guy on XRTwo who had a battery tray. Fitted which signals no more welding. Previous to this the exhaust bracket got repaired with a kit car type universal thing I had to bend into shape. But 100 times better than the get me home bodge that was on there. Next up in preperation for the new shocks I had ordered I thought I would clean the arches up. I had painted them all out back in 08 but not exactly looking fresh anymore. So I cleaned them first. Then gave them a couple of coats of Hamerite. I am not looking for it to be a show car, but want it to look sharp as it goes down the street. Then after 2 weeks I got my rear shocks! These were the ones that were in stock, its the fronts that are on back order and ment to be in mid March. I can see me seeking an alternative if I hear nothing this week. Then fitted before the wheels went back on. It is a bit backward to be doing in the arches before the body but I don't intend to have the wheels off again until its on the road so will mask them up for painting. So I need the front shocks to turn up so I can replace the ball joints and track rod ends, fit the shocks etc in order to get it in the garage to prep it up.

Looking good. Always looked at these when I first passed my test 20 years ago when they were cheap, never got round to buying one though.

Well I ordered a mk3 escort battery tray to see what that looked like and the fit is much better than the universal one but I am still not 100%. It just seems to big compared tot he original. Since buying it though I have had a guy contact me who has a tidy original one on a shell he is scraping so I may be in luck. Next up I took the drivers rear quarter back to metal on the bottom half as there was filer in it and I wanted to see what was hiding. There are a few minor dents nothing major. The front half had a load of glue and silicon on it from the old side moulding so I thought I might aswell take the lot off. I also needed to remove the paint on the rear panel where we knocked the dent out so it made sence to do it. Also I had the tyre took back off the bad wheel and there was a 20mm crack in the middle of the rim, the wheel was kurbed badly when I got it and was probably a result of this that cracked it. I had knocked the damage out of the rim just after I brought it and we have now welded the crack ground it back and put a smear of seam sealer on for good measure. The result is it now holds air so I just need 2 more tyres now. You can get a pair delivered off ebay the same as the 2 already brought for £78 so I will probably go for them so all the tyres match.

A good story behind the project, looks like its coming along well. Going to be nice to see it progress further! Regards, Matt Thanks It will go the same colour again, I have enough jobs/projects on the go without giving myself more to do in changing the colour, that is without what I would like to buy and do in the coming year. So a quick turn round is most important. However when I brought it I thought in my head (as you do) it would be on the road by now. I have had futher problems today, I ordered a set of KYB shocks for it only to find out the fronts are not available till mid March! I really carn't belive how hard it is to get parts for these now.

I had a couple of hours on it this afternoon and managed to remove the tired shocks that offer no resistance when compressed by hand. The springs seem to be ok and should go again, I was concerned that they had been cut but thankfully they are intact. I could do with some new top mout bearings for the fronts aswell as some dust covers. I have messaged a guy on ebay about some bearings to see if they are for a fiesta as the listing is very good at not telling you what they fit. Before I went on holiday I collected a pair of 175/50/13 Nankang tyres off a local chap via ebay that were as new as he had only used them to set his suspension up then ditched them in favour of Yokos. Why he didn't just buy the Yokos in the first place is beyond me but at £50 his loss is my gain. I had them fitted to 2 of the wheels but unfortunatly 1 of them is losing pressure fast via the rim which we think is a failed spotweld. I hope we will be able to fix it with the welder as finding a spare is going to be worse than finding a battery tray. The other 2 wheels hold air fine and have legal tread but they are the tyres I fitted back in 2008 and the walls are cracking, so need another 2 really but I will see how the repair goes on the bad one before I spend anymore on them as I may have to buy a set of alternative wheels. Before I had discovered the bad wheel I had scored a set of wheel trims off ebay that need a paint so may go this route if the wheel repair goes ok. The powder coating on the wheels is not bad after 7 years but is far from brilliant and there were a few dings in the rims off the previous owner which I have straightend out but has affected the powder coating. I could get then redone but as I will be using it daily they will do as they are and if I paint the trims and fit them they will be respectable enough.

Started a thread on the Facebook page for you about this tray. Getting harder to find now, the mk1/2 escort ones use the same clamp but that's about it. A mk3 escort tray is £18 on ebay brand new, these use the same support mounts as a fiesta and is practically the same tray, just a little bigger. Hopefully this helps. Thanks Dave. Sorry for the delayed response but I have been away to Disneyland and for some reason I cannot sign in to this forum from my mobile and when I try and change my password it says my user name does not exist and the same with my email. I am still no closer to finding a proper tray so any help would be brilliant. I have a universal one in stock which will go in if I don't find one soon. The fit isn't brilliant but it would work if other options run out.

You will be needing a garage if your thinking of buying a mini they made them out of sugar paper and they don't like water. Buy a good one though and they are great experience and are only going up in value. I have had about 10 over the years. I would rather drive a Leon Cupra r than a mondeo 100%. I carn't fault my mondeo I have done 50,000miles in it without a problem but they are very normal. I always promised myself a cossie from when I was about 16 but it took a bit longer than I had planned, I think its great. It attracts lots of attention which is good and bad though.

Another project ? Looks pretty good, I've always had a soft spot for mk2 fiestas. I'm still getting the itch for another ford but at the moment still ain't got a garage. Will be good to see it coming along and also finished. How you doing mate? You still got the Golf? I am crazy really taking on another one, I could have got the Mini finished this year instead of doing this but I couldn't pass on it. Its been 10 years+ since I had a retro daily so carn't wait to get this finished.

These are very rare now Phil, seen them going for £80 for a nos one. There only spotted on, so people will sell there's from a scrap vehicle, this is your best bet. Join the mk1/2 fiesta facebook pages, lots being broken over here, every little part available. Failing that, join www.xrtwo.com, good chance on there too. Lots of people are relocating the battery to the boot these days. Going to pickup some XR2 steels tonight I am already trying on both suggested methods but nothing is happening. It was suggested that a mk2 escort one is a decent fit but have yet to see a pic of one fitted? Nice one on the steels I have got all my centre caps now and got some xr2 wheels trims on there way hopefully so may go that route. I have just been a picked up a pair of tyres for it too.

I thought the same about the arches mate, they looked a bit rough in the pictures and you could tell it had sat for a good while, but for £500 I wasn't about to grumble, I was literally about to go buy it when I got the phone call saying it had gone, and I'm still on the look out for one now haha, currently got a 1.1 festival XR2 replica running 2.0 Zetec but needs a full respray, I'm just looking for a small project now a nice clean shell to start with that doesn't need a respray etc, I've had my big projects and just want a smaller one now? I am not grumbling at the price, my only grumble is the mistreatment, as if it had been in the same condition as when I had sold it I would have happly paid trebble the price. They are hard to find at a decent price now though and finding parts for them has got a whole lot more difficult since 2008. However back in 08 when I did this I had 99% of the bits and it was roughly 2004 I collected the bits to convert the original one I had and you could get the bits easy. I brought a complete rotten xr2 with MOT and Tax for £200 to break for the running gear. Back on to the parts wanted. I need a battery tray, magnum make them but are out of stock and I have got to wait till they press some more. Not much good as I am waiting on it to finish the welding. So has anyone got one lying about or know of a someone that keeps them in stock? I have got the rest of the parts in the list above I just need; A battery tray A radiator

Well I have been let down with my battery tray and apparently magnum the only people that make them are out of stock even though they were showing stock on there computer (I ordered from a local factors that deal with them direct) when I ordered. It now looks like I will have to wait for the next batch to be made if I don't find one by some other means. So I need a battery tray as that is all I need now to finish the welding, anyone know of somewhere that may keep one in stock? Or anyone got one lying about?
