I'm very interested, infact I might have these for my capri, do they sound good? Also what did it do for your fuel economy? They sound excellent! On my Golf the distance between the throttle butterflies and the inlet valves was about 4 inches, the throttle response and induction noise was very addictive. This is really why I can't tell you what they're like mpg wise, as I developed a very heavy right foot when they went on! Provided they're set up right I don't think they'll be too bad. I'm interested in a bike carb setup on a 2.0 pinto will these make decent power ? You'd probably need to open the main jets up to suit your larger engine, or buy new ones, it's an easy job to do, and the jets aren't expensive. Power wise I can't tell you, but they'll undoubtedly be better than a stock carb setup. Most people say bike carbs, a 4 branch and exhaust and maybe a lumpier cam are what's needed to see big power gains.

I need to tax both my cars this month so I'm getting rid of some stuff that I've hoarded because 'it'll come in handy one day' So, this is a set of CBR600 F2 Bike carbs, and the fuel pump to suit. The main jets have been opened up to 1.5mm to suit the 1300cc Golf I fitted them to, at the advice of bike carb specialists Bogg Bros in Yorkshire. The fuel pump makes the whole job a lot easier, as most people buy Facet pumps and pressure regulators, and end up fiddling with them for ages to get the fuelling right, but this avoids all that, as the pump is designed to deliver the right amount of fuel at the right pressure for the carbs. Here they are the second turn of the key after being fitted to my golf: The manifold pictured was a home made effort to fit them to the Golf (can you tell? ) and it's available too if you really want it. The plate was professionally CNC cut using the inlet gasket as a guide, but the tubes could do with lopping off and re-doing as the welding's a bit 'functional'

I can see what they've tried to achieve, but it misses the mark for me.
I might be wrong, but I think that bonnet is off an E28 5 series.

This is what immediately struck me:
He had in his hand, filled in and signed the logbook for the car when he bought it! Any buyer with half a brain reads the logbook and goes over it to make sure all the car's details and the keeper's name and address details are correct, and that it's not a forgery before signing!
Glad to see that this has had a good (touch wood) outcome

If you know one end of a spanner from the other you should be ok. I think that's a fairly serious understatement in your case! Some very impressive work going on here, can't wait to see the finished product!

My E36 wasn't so much of a mojo killer as a bank account killer. Cost me more than I paid for it to get through an MOT, when I sold it (as a huge loss) it was actually a pretty sorted example. I had a 2001 Y plate Leon Cupra, and that was a bit of a mare too. Not unreliable, but developed a mystery leak into the interior, and a few electrical gremlins. It's like anything, when you get through a lot of cars, you come across 'problem cars' from time to time

The exhaust layout at the back suggests to me that it's a bug engine in the rear, so perhaps the renault body was dropped on the Beetle floorpan?
But then when you open the rear tailgate to load your shopping you'd be faced with a bug engine...

That looks like a really excellent meet! The brown mk3 Cortina is lovely, and I'm pretty sure this has the best stance of any car I've ever seen, but I don't know what it is?

Some lovely touches on that truck - is it rotary powered?

Looking forward to seeing the swap happen! Should be most excellent, and all this is improving my Benz knowledge no end.
Might I suggest a Ferris Bueller style attempt at getting it past 300k? On axle stands flat out in top gear?

One of my earliest motoring memories is watching my old man repairing the scuttle on his Mk3 Cortina with fibreglass and filler. Other notable moments include seeing him replacing an exhaust hanger on our Morris Ital with a coathanger, and sitting on the hard shoulder when his Mk4 1300 escort burnt a valve out pulling our caravan . I'm almost certain these cars were all purchases out of necessity, but I'm not a huge fan of blue ovals as a result. One drive in my first car (mk1 Golf) and he's been a VW man ever since, well VW, Seat, Skoda etc. I've strayed over to BMWs since, so I guess my preference is german metal. Most of the cars I've had have been an informed choice, makes/models I've heard horror stories about I tend to avoid. I think the only car I bought out of necessity was a Skoda Felicia, and that turned out to be one of the most reliable cars I've ever had. I've also owned a Ford, but it was a Mk1 Fiesta that I was given for free, and it was rotten to the core. I think of all things, this forum has broadened my horizons the most, nowhere else would you get exposure the broad spectrum of cars that you see on here, from all over the world.

Loving all three motors, I was offered an X1/9 a few years ago, really wish I'd not turned it down now!
The E28 looks like an absolute steal, looks very mean on the steel wheels too. Lapis blau I think is the colour? The lumpy idle could be down to a dirty MAF or idle control valve, mine's doing the same, but I've yet to investigate.

If what I've read is true, then mk2 and mk3 Golf coilovers also fit B3 and B4 Passats.
Generic hottuning coilovers can be had for £140 a set delivered off Ebay. They come via the seller direct from Hottuning, if anyone's looking for some I'll PM you the link.
(sorry for the thread hijack Barnesy!)

I'm not sure if this has been asked before - if so I'm sorry, my search mojo is weak. I have 3 old car batteries, 2 normal sized ones and a massive 95 amp jobby out of an X5, and a duff old jump start pack cluttering up my garage, is it worth taking them to the local metal processors for some beer tokens? My only experience of weighing stuff in was during the last olympics when scrap was dirt cheap, and I got £8.50 for a complete Golf engine

Nice work Mr Barnes, love the photos.
What's the story with the gearbox? Has the box gone bad or is it just a dodgy linkage?

I can only imagine the amount of flack he must get from most of his motoring journo colleagues for owning and driving a car like that.
That car is awesome, garnished with cool, with a side order of want. Love it.
