I really don't want to do this but the car isn't getting used as much as I'd like, and I don't want to lay it up over winter. My Rocco is an early Mk2 1.5 CL, with factory single headlamps and single wiper, I'm told it's one of just 3000 made. I've been into VWs for 10 years and I've never seen another. It has 11 months MOT and Tax til the end of January, and it's had a lot of work done in the last 12 months: I've fitted Jamex coilovers, pressed metal UK font plates, new bottom balljoints, wishbones, bushes, trackrods and ends, and polybushed the rear beam. It's had all new brake pipes, flexis and unions in the last 12 months, and had a complete fluid change. I've also fitted a new filler neck, these are no longer available so it was not cheap! I've fitted a dash, with no cracks, and a complete GT2 interior which is mint, with no bolster wear at all. It's also had a new exhaust from downpipe backwards 6 months ago. The car has 68k miles on the clock, which I'm told is genuine as the car was garaged for a while, but I have only got the last 4 MOTs to prove. The engine pulls very well, with no rattles, and uses no oil or water, so there's not reason why it's not genuine. I've fitted a weber carb, and had it set up by a specialist, so it runs spot on, and despite being exempt from it, passes the emissions test by a mile. The only issue with the car is bodywork which is a little shabby in places, and would benefit form some tidying, and the rear arches could do with repairing, but the car is rock solid underneath, infact the MOT tester commented on how solid it was when it was tested in August. The car owes me over £1300 quid, but I'm realistic I won't get that for it. Here are some pictures of the car - Please note the wheels pictured will not go with the car. If you bring your own wheels I'd look at offers around £900. I'd advise you to come and have a look as it's a really solid example of an early model, most are rotten by now. Cheers Tom

I passed my driving test in my dad's Montego 1.6 Countryman Estate! The tester almost wouldn't do the test because when he got in he kicked a hole in the sill! I had the remains of a garage donated to me last year, and it had this in it: It was fairly tidy, and I was deciding what to do with it when some local 'scrap metal scrotes' backed a tranny up to it, and nicked it in the middle of the night.

It is a bit 'tanfastic' but it would rock hard with a nice dark satin paintjob. I think the only other thing I'd change is I'd mount the headlight low over the front tyre

From that I'm guessing a small block 1300 8v, polished, with carbs? I really feel for that shiny bootlid

That escort estate is what I'm after, but its miles away with no MOT Get some insurance on it, and book an MOT local to you. Too late, I just checked up on it and it ended with BIN. £1500 for something with no T&T . What is the world coming to?? It's round the corner from me, if I didn't have so much other tat to tinker with, I'd be round there having a jolly good poke round under that to find out if it's MOT worthy. Like I say it looks tidy, but my last Mk1 did, for a while...

I did a course similar to this last year at Horwich College near Bolton. 'Classic Car Restoration' £100 for 16 weeks 2 hours a week.
It became clear that you got taught how to use whatever machinery was in the shop, then you could bring in whatever tat you had and weld/paint/tinker with it using their facilities. Depending on who was there you'd see an old 80s Sherpa van, Morris Oxford, Triumph Dolomite, My Rocco, Mk1 Capri, and a Mustang in the workshop!

What are you proposing doing with it ?? Are you thinking of breaking it, selling the engine on Ed38, then weighing in teh rest ? Seems a waste to me...... What does it need for test ? and what was it laid up for 4 years ago ? Sounds like a decent car full stop if it doesnt need a lot ? seems a shame to break it...... I was going to buy it and use the engine in the Scirocco, it's not a money making exercise! No idea what it'd need for test, it's been laid up because the fella got a job as a courier and got a van so never used it. I'll have a good old poke round it and if it turns out too good to break, I'll give the fella's details out to interested parties if you like?

I'm going to look at an Audi 80 16v on Saturday.
It was pitched at me as a donor car for my Scirocco, being the sought after 9A 16v lump. It's been laid up for 4 years plus, so it's got no T or T but it's got a genuine 42k on it with history to prove.
I've spoken to the guy selling it and he says it's too good to break, starts and drives well etc etc, and he wants £300 for it.
Do you think this is a bit steep considering what I need it for? Tarting it up and selling on isn't an option as the Rocco's drained my funds for the time being, and SWMBO has agreed to the purchase on the condition that it's gone inside a fortnight.
My thinking was this. Presuming the engine's good, it's worth £200 all day sold on Edition, and not counting any other parts I could sell, the shell without engine should fetch a ton?
Any thoughts?

I realise the wheels aren't to everyone's taste, but then neither are Sciroccos!
The lacquer was lifting on the dishes of the wheels, so I just invested £5 in some satin black and painted em up. They'll be getting a professional refurb when the time comes.
I've been doing some research into engine conversions, and I'm going to look at a potential donor car at the weekend :-)

A dinged up satin black Nova GSI with the paint ripped off the bonnet and a load of random curse word piled on the roof is NOT rat for me.
I know there are probably wikipedia definitions of rat look but it stems from back when the hot rodders would take rusty old 1930s bodies, shoe horn big blocks under the hood, race them, and ignore the bodywork completely. The extreme of function over form.

Engine failures are ususally fine, at least the bits are kept within the engine bay and have a thick cast block to absorb some energy. However flywheel explosions are something else, probably the most dangerous catastrophic failure that can happen to the drivetrain of a car, plenty of people have had their toes/feet blown clean off. Rotaried wagon videos.streetfire.net/video/Mazda-Rotary-Wagon_33640.htmTends to happen when you lighten the stock flywheel too much or raise the rev limit by a huge amount. Probably best to get a scatter shield if you're your car has any of the above, better than having no legs. Matt You've gotta love the commentator's reaction - 'aw struth - has any one in the crowd been hit'
